2021 roster

Recommended Posts

According to overthecap.com, the Jets have 33 players under contract for the 2021 season.  Add on the draft picks and that'll bring it to 42.  Also lots of jags who are unlikely to hang around for more than another season or two.  Lots of work still to be done for Joe D.

Of those 33 players, I don't see these guys being on the roster by 2021.  They'll either be traded or cut by then:

  • Le'Veon Bell ($9.5M savings)
  • Jamison Crowder ($10.5M savings)
  • Jamal Adams ($9.9M savings)
  • Quincy Enunwa ($6M savings)
  • Henry Anderson ($9.2M savings)
  • George Fant ($7.4M savings)
  • Trenton Cannon ($920K savings)
  • John Franklin-Myers ($920K savings)
  • Jimmy Murray ($850K savings)
  • Braxton Berrios ($850K savings)
  • Mike White ($850K savings)
  • Ahmad Gooden ($850K savings)
  • Brad Lundblade ($850K savings)
  • Anthony Cioffi ($780K savings)
  • Corbin Kaufusi ($780K savings)
  • Ian Berryman ($780K savings)
  • Wyatt Ray ($780K savings)

That would leave us with the following current players scheduled to be under contract in 2021 who would actually be on the roster in 2021 (note that this doesn't include 1-year contract guys like Poole, Perriman or Jordan Jenkins):

  • QB (2):  Darnold, James Morgan
  • RB (1):  Perine
  • WR (3):  Mims, Lawrence Cager, George Campbell
  • TE (3):  Herndon, Ryan Griffin, Wesco
  • OT (3):  Becton, Edoga, Jared Hilbers
  • G (3):  Alex Lewis, Van Roten, Cameron Clark
  • C (1) :  McGovern
  • EDGE (2):  Jabari Zuniga, Bryce Huff
  • DT (6):  Quinnen Williams, Shepherd, Fatukasi, Kyle Phillips, Sterling Johnson, Domenique Davis
  • OLB:  NONE
  • ILB (2):  Mosley, Blake Cashman

You're going to be a real ray of sunshine when Jamal signs a 6 year $110 million deal, aren't you?

From that list above, which was very well thought out by Jetsfan80, as a general matter players under contract will likely stay on the team, and those not will not.   Crowder, Adams and Fant will likely be on the team.

Yeah, I thought the same thing about the list, and those three players. Maybe even Anderson if he has a bounce back year.

As long as Wyatt Ray is still on the team I'll be ok.

Where do you see Harrison?  I actually think he's a nice depth piece. No way should he be the pencilled in starter but versatile depth sure.  I really don't think they love him though. The Kalil debacle says as much.

9 of those guys (Ray, Berryman, Kaufusi, Cioffi, Lundblade, Gooden, White, and Murray) are roster filler - camp bodies who won't make the 55 this year and won't be expected to be on the team in 2021. Neither will Enunwa. Add back our 9 players we drafted this year, who will all be signed through 2021, and that's 32. Add in 8 2021 draft picks, and that leaves 15 roster spots to be filled with some combination of UDFAs and FAs (resigning our own expiring contracts, like Jenkins and Poole, or bringing in players from other teams). And it's also fair to assume the Jets aren't paying Le'Veon 11M in cash next year unless he sets the world on fire this year.

He's due to hit free agency after 2020.  I see no reason why he'd be re-signed for 2021.

You're trying to cut Braxton Berrios and Jamison Crowder?

Crowder:  For $10.5M in cap space?  Absolutely.  Sign back Crowder after that if you'd like but I don't see a big need there to keep him.  He wasn't a JD signing.

Berrios:  Yes, I don't see him being a part of the team's long-term plans beyond 2020.

This should be a completely different WR room in 2021, with Mims and possibly our new UDFA's Cager and Campbell "leading the way".

If we cut Crowder we have literally one starting caliber wr on the roster Mims

Perriman is just a one year deal if he has a good season with Sam which he probably will he’s going to be looking for $40 million or more

Lol, you can't help yourself with Jamal.

See no reason to move on from Crowder, and it's not like they have a replacement available for Darnold's favorite target.

And giving up on Fant before he plays a down? I think I'd like to see him play a bit.

But yeah, Bell and Enunwa are certain goners, and Anderson will either be a pay cut or a cut.

The financials of Fant's contract make it so that the deal he signed is essentially a 1-year "prove it" deal.  If he does, great.

Crowder may well still be Darnold's favorite target entering 2021, but we're not keeping him at that cap number.  A cut and re-sign is certainly possible.

Berrios:  Yes, I don't see him being a part of the team's long-term plans beyond 2020.

He's the team's only punt returner, and he's pretty good at it. He's also the only WR on the roster besides Crowder who might be able to handle the slot. He's only 24 years old, and is under contract for $850k in 2021. I'll actually be shocked if he's not at the very least in training camp next year. There's no reason to cut him.

The financials of Fant's contract make it so that the deal he signed is essentially a 1-year "prove it" deal.  If he does, great.

Crowder may well still be Darnold's favorite target entering 2021, but we're not keeping him at that cap number.  A cut and re-sign is certainly possible.

I understand how Fant's contract is structured, but I'm certainly hoping that he works out. I'd rather have a decent OT on the roster for $10M/year than that $10.5M in cap space looking for an OT.

I could see Crowder signing an extension. If he's the Jets leading receiver again I can't see them being too upset about his current price tag.
