Popular Post Doggin94it
Yes, 65. Practice squads have expanded to 12 and the league now allows teams to call 2 extra players up from the PS for a 55 man gameday roster (and players sent back to the practice squad don't need to clear waivers the first two times). That's a huge change, and I expect most of the players on the practice squad will be active at some point. So here's the prediction Offense - 25 + 4 QB (3) Darnold, Fales, Morgan. Thought about keeping only 2, but I doubt they're going to be comfortable enough with Morgan to do that yet, though Fales is useless. RB (4) Bell, Gore, Perine, Not on the roster yet /Cannon. The first three are locks. The fourth RB needs to play specials and Cannon is an outstanding gunner. Neither Adams nor Dixon play specials; signing Gore ended their opportunity here. But it's likely that someone not yet on the team ends up with this spot after all the cuts are done. TE (3) Herndon, Griffin, Wesco. Daniel Brown is useless and will never be anything useful. Wesco is useless and could be something useful if things break right. No way we keep 4,and this is another position where I wouldn't be shocked to see us drop whoever "wins" the No 3 TE job for someone cut from another team. OL (10 + 2) Becton, Lewis, McGovern, Van Roten, Fant, Edoga, Clark, Harrison, Andrews, Winters. I'd love to see Winters replaced but we need depth and it doesn't look like they're moving on from him yet. McDermott & Braden to the PS WR (5 + 2) Perriman, Mims, Crowder, Berrios, Cager. V. Smith & Campbell to the practice squad. Tough break for Smith but Cager brings an element to the receiving corps that the Jets don't otherwise have. If they keep 6 (which is possible), Smith has a job. Defense - 25 + 8. Yes, I'm allocating 8 of the 12 PS spots to the defense, because it's where we have the most depth AND the most questionable depth charts, and where our gameday roster needs the most flexibility to match up with opponents. I think we'll see a fair number of PS DL, LB & CB spending time as the 54th & 55th players on the active roster, and it's not like we have worthy developmental QBs, RBs, or TEs, unfortunately. DL (6 + 1) Williams, McLendon, Anderson, Shepherd, Fatukasi, Phillips. This is a really good core and I don't see any surprises cracking the roster. Domenique Davis to the PS in a purely developmental role. I'm pretty sure Kaufusi is no longer eligible or he'd have a practice squad spot. LB (10 + 3) Jenkins, Zuniga, Basham, Huff, Mosley, Williamson, Hewitt, Burgess, Cashman, Onwuasor. Luvu, Langi & Bello to the PS, but they'll each end up with active games this year. S (4 + 1) Adams, Maye, Davis, B. Jackson. Cioffi to the PS CB (6+3) Desir, Austin, Poole, Wilson, Maulet, Hall. This is probably where the toughest battles will be. Won't surprise anyone if Hairston takes a spot, or Lamar Jackson does. If it breaks this way, Jackson, Guidry, and Shy Carter hit the PS, and all see action over the course of the year. Jackson could force the issue with a good preseason and take a spot from Maulet or Wilson Special Teams - 3 Mann, Hennessey, & Ficken, who's the only real question of the three
TNJet
Who's Adams on the oline? Never heard of him. McDermott stays over someone I've never heard if I'd say.

CrazyCarl40
Keeping Gore over someone like Adams is a mistake.
derp
Jets paid decent money for Hilbers and I’d expect him to at least be on the PS. Other little things here and there but this was a fun read and thoughtful even where I didn’t think of things the same way. 1

That's what I was going for. Not much to discuss these days ...
GreenFish
On offense, that’s pretty much how I see it as well. With one exception that I think we carry 6 WRs (Smith) and carry 9 OL (cut Harrison or Andrews). On defense, those backup roles might go to special teams guys. Langi and Bello were two of our better special teams players. I think they’ll make it over Cashman and Burgess. Tough decisions to be made at LB for sure. Farley was very good on special teams as well. Nice work. We have depth on this team for the first time in a longtime. Now we just need guys to develop and then sprinkle in a couple top players on each side.

#27TheDominator
@derp already pointed out Hilbers. I think that you are wrong on Daniel Brown. Somebody must love him. I think Douglas was there when Baltimore signed him and he played for Loggains in Chicago. He had a couple of big preseasons and has a really good catch rate. I think he is good on specials. He blocked a punt in preseason and recovered on onside kick when he was with the Bears. He didn't turn 28 yet and is a converted WR who played (surprise, surprise) basketball, I think he makes the team. I think Griffin got run because Brown was dinged coming out of camp. Jeff Smith is also a wild card. Somebody must like him. He is as athletic as they come. As soon as he was active they gave him run and looked way better than expected. I probably like him more than I should, but I was shocked they even carried him on the practice squad after he did nothing all preseason. Seemed like a stash move and I think he has a shot now. I also thought they were looking Shyheim Carter for safety. I think he sticks ahead of Cioffi and maybe Bennett Jackson too. I think the line between safety and nickel CB is pretty blurred right now. 1

I think they've left themselves open to cutting him if he's outplayed by one of the kids.

These are great points. Pretty much agree with everything. Just the fact that Brown was a FA and they brought him back with Herndon, Griffin, and Wesco already under contract should tell you something. I'll also add that I think they actually like Adams, Moore and Dixon and those guys will get a legit shot to make the roster (if they carry 4 which I'm not sure they will). I kind of think despite Cannon being a good gunner he will lose the job. Ash Davis is also supposed to be a great gunner.
CTJetsFan
I thought I read somewhere recently that the Jets really liked Daniel Brown (TE) on special teams (yeah, surprised me too).
GreenFish
Because Cannon was injured, our two gunners on punts last year were Maulet and Bellemy. Maulet was the better of two from what I saw watching punts (got curious about punt coverage after we drafted Mann). Maulet was also the guy who returned the Pats muffed punt for a TD. As @PepPep noted, Ashtyn Davis is known to be an excellent gunner. So Cannon, Maulet and Davis are options at gunner. Giving Davis and Cannon are excellent athletes, I have to imagine they have a leg up on Maulet. Kickoff Returner is going to be equally competitive. Davis, V Smith, and Cannon can all do it at a good level. Berrios probably has punt returner on lock. Michael Nania did an interesting analysis where he looked at kick returns of greater than 25 yards. On those returns, he noted who were the players that made key blocks. The top guys were Langi (10), Farley (7), Bello (6), Brown (6), Basham (6). Thought this was good because it gives us a sense who are the more valuable guys in the return game. Basham last year also had a FG block to boot. Guy contributes every where on the team.

He adds solid depth to the secondary, proving he can be a key contributor when thrust into a starting role last year. Honestly, I think he's all but a lock to make the roster, its really his spot to lose- much like Poole, Bless, Hall, and even Desir.
