If the season is cancelled -- how do they determine draft order?

And if there is a massive outbreak in several NFL cities or one team has it run through the locker room, money won’t matter. What if one of these players dies? Come on. This is common sense.

A player could die from the concussion epidemic. These guys are in their twenties. The mortality rate for young and healthy (albeit black men is higher) is negligible.

Design a “smart” system that protects the vulnerable and everyone wins

Patriots, then random selection.

Well, can't go wrong with a Woody Johnson then.

Jets get the 2nd overall pick but then the algorithm spits out that the jets win two useless games at the end of the year when the other team is resting starters kicking us down 8 spots.

How many NBA players died? It was running wild while they were still playing games.

I am 1000% confident there will be a full season.

You bring up concussions and the NFL and then say design a smart system. Good one.

And they shut down the NBA almost immediately. Not a great example of your point.

It's not getting cancelled. I'm over this quarantine sh*t and I make a pittance of what these dudes do. Half these idiots live paycheck to paycheck. Owners don't care. I guarantee the season will happen. This will be the best payoff for the PSL owners yet. They get some money back for a year

And if a team has an outbreak?

The head coach, a handful of key players and/or more?

The roster is limited as it is.  What will they do?  Forfeit?  Draw replacement players?  Carry larger practice squads?

The possibility that the season fails is very, very real.

This is what happens during pandemics like this.  Things will continually open and close until a vaccine exists.  Just because its open now doesn’t mean it will be this fall.

The NBA has a plan in place that would allow the season to continue if a player tests positive. The chances of a player dying from the virus is essentially zero.

The risk is never zero.  That includes everything in life.

And the NBA season is restarting when?

Probably the way they do the supplemental draft.

3 groups and lotteries within those brackets.

1st group: non playoff teams with 6 or less wins

2nd group: non playoff teams with more than 6 wins

3rd group: playoff teams

They do a lottery within those groups. So the Jets would pick in the 11-20 range.

And then inexplicably the patriots will win the lottery just like every year somehow a certain team wins the NBA draft lottery

Sounds like soon, since the players gave the green light.

Don’t be shocked if they cancel the season.  I think even next season might be at risk

Yes they do. Months later. And of course the death chances are very low. That’s not the point. The point is if one team has an outbreak, there is a greater than zero chance they’ll need to shut down again. Period.

How about they cross that bridge when they get there instead of playing these worst case hypotheticals?

The NBA was a victim of timing. They will play this fall.

What happens when a team has a bunch of injuries? Half of our starters were on IR last year, and the season went on. Our starting QB had mono, which is highly contagious, and the season went on. If half of our team had caught mono from Sam, would they have cancelled the season?

Was just thinking about this in the Charlie Weis thread. Let's say the 2020 season is cancelled, or even drastically reduced (let's say in early October it gets cancelled after 3 games when a new wave pops up.)

How will they determine draft order? Seems like a fairly major issue for those coveting Trevor Lawrence.

I'm thinking some kind of weighted lottery that factors in 2019 record as well? What say you?

Moot point......there will be no college season, therefore no draft.

They can't go by this year's draft, since the draft theoretically helps the worst teams the most. Can't give a team that had the #1 pick in 2020 the #1 pick in 2021 if there is no, or a shortened, season. That is totally unfair. I think a lottery would be the only fair way to do it. I do like the suggestion someone had that they group the teams into lottery bins based on last season's record. That makes it a little more fair, and guarantees that the Cheaters don't get the #1 pick.

But leave it to the NFL to do something stupid like run next year's draft in the opposite order of this year's draft...😨

If they use the supplemental draft rules, the best pick the Pats can get is pick 21 since they made the playoffs. Same with the Bills. In our division, only Miami would have a chance at pick #1.

Why would one be dependent on the other? Clearly there will be a draft regardless of if or when there is a college season.

Exactly.  Players will be given back that year of eligibility if there's no CFB season, so they'd all be making individual decisions on whether or not to use that year OR enter the 2021 draft.

The talent pool might be more limited than in usual seasons but the draft will still happen no matter what.

Risk management is a thing. If half the league gets coronavirus and 1 person dies that's a huge liability. That's also a lawsuit. And that's a whole lot of bad press.

And people like you will be the first to jump on them. Mahomes dies and you'll pitch a fit and blame them for not protecting their players.
