Opening Up Practice Facilities...What's Fair??

Recommended Posts

I live in Dallas and things are getting back to normal here.  I have a completely different viewpoint on this virus than my brother does who lives in NYC. So it got me thinking. What happens to the teams that are in the NY area when it comes to practices and the rest of the world is opening up.  Does the NFL say that nothing can start until NY can start or does the NFL move on without the NY teams??

It’s already been stated all states need to be ready to open before any team is allowed to report.

Add the Giants to the list of teams that may move their training camp site. Instead of New Jersey – one of the nation’s most hard-hit areas – head coach Joe Judge says the Giants could hold training camp at a different facility in another state (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan).

Same here.

I live in Arizona.  We're open for business.  Restaurants started dine-in services yesterday following CDC guidelines for reduced occupancy (removing like half the tables in the restaurant), servers wearing masks, 6ft. separation if there's a line for the restroom, 1 person in the restroom at a time in some locations, etc.

Depending on where you are in the country you're seeing totally different case numbers, reactions, etc.  Some places need to be locked down, others really don't quite honestly.  It's like hurricane preparedness.  Board up the windows in Florida but do we really need people in Nebraska to hide in their houses if there's minimal risk?

This is what sports leagues and, quite honestly, the government is struggling with.  It will be interesting to see how not only the NFL, but other leagues and the NCAA handle this.

Nebraska had major, once in 100 years flooding in 2019 that caused billions of dollars in damages. Just so you know.

Well that's sobering news because NY area is a real problem right now.

LA locked down throughout the summer. Smart.  NY will not open up haphazardly. Smart.  Other cities and area in US will see spikes that open up. Dumb.  I doubt any sports will be played this year.

NY is starting to open back up this Friday with a phased approach. The numbers are back down to mid-March type numbers for new hospital admissions.

That’s good to hear. Looking at the linear trend in cases, things are looking promising in NY.

One of the benefits NY will have going forward is that at least 25% of the population has already been exposed. It’ll be higher by the fall. So while everyone else is panicking next fall, New Yorkers are going to be like man up and let your body make its own stinking vaccine.

I continue to view this in two different ways:

  • If players and staff are coming in and out of the facility for training camp or otherwise, keeping out the virus will be very hard.  You can say it will be harder in NY, but the virus will look different then.  NY/NJ area will have made more progress toward herd immunity than other areas of the country.
  • The NFL is the perfect business, particularly during training camp, to run a locked down operation.  If you lock down the operation and test everyone on the way in, there is no reason why each NFL could not run their training camps at home (if special state permission if necessary) if everyone is locked down.

My concern would be that teams in areas less effected would have false confidence, allowing more movement of players and staff, and end up in worse shape then the teams in the Northeast.

We have seen some interesting examples thus far.  Professional basketball players and the related staff were surprisingly highly infected, very early during this Pandemic.   Over in Europe, we continue to see soccer players running around with girlfriends/escorts, going to parties, etc.  These young, male professional athletes will not just self-isolate.  They will get around, and those with families will be at more risk, particularly if the wife/mother and kids are going to work and school every day.

To me, there is no solution other than a closed system, but if the NFL teams do close the system, there is no reason they should no be able to successful run a season.   The biggest challenge is getting the players and staff to lockdown if they still think they can get paid.

seems to me the jets and the giants can practice outside of the metro nyc area so they shouldn't have a problem.  and really the main region where the states are having issues with opening up is in the northeast so it really only concerns the jets, giants, patsies.  the ravens, redskins, and eagles may also have trouble as well as the bears.

UPSTATE NY is starting to open, not the City and downstate area. Please check the facts before posting generalities.

Tell you what Karen, I'll post what I want when I want unless the moderaters have a problem with it. If you have a problem with it, blow block me.

I said a phased approach which was referring to the by region phased approach. Not my problem if you're upset by that - and I am well aware of the facts. When the city and downstate regions meet the criteria, they will begin opening as well.

The city is 302 square miles. New York State is 54,556 square miles. Much of the state is beginning to open up.

This has nothing to do with NFL practice facilities.

Another thread with more BS that will now get locked.  Nice work.

Sadly, your probably correct.  It is almost impossible to talk about this virus with out including politics.  Our elected officials have made a political "football" out of this.

The Governors of the states will decide if they allow camps to open,  not based on what's good for their states specific situation, but along party lines.  Both Party's.

Sad but true

By the time late July early August rolls around states will be more open (we're starting to get there already) and the NFL will have a plan in place for teams whose governors wont allow them to practice, which again the NFL has leverage here because taking away Eagles and Steeler football isnt going to be looked at the same as Pirates baseball. Florida and Arizona are the contingency plans.

I'm inclined at this point to agree.

Myself I could deal with it if the Jets are playing their home games at Spectrum Stadium in Orlando.  :)

I feel pretty strongly that there will be a season.  What it's actually going to look like I don't have a clue,  Money will rule in the end as it usually does

Totally, but I just hid the post instead and will leave it at this:

@Jetster enough. More than enough, in that it had no place here to begin with. If you're half as wise as you think, you should know better.

Next one like that gets the vacation length that @The Crusher has been handing out, which last I saw was 30 days; plus then he sits his sweaty, hairy fat ass on your face for the first 6 hours upon returning.

This goes for others going over the line as well.

I agree, but almost impossible is not impossible. Never mind that rant of his had nothing to do with NFL teams practicing.

Meh, everyone already been told repeatedly. I’d would have just launched him. I’ll just stay out of this thread.
