New Jersey stay-at-home order will prevent Jets from opening team facilities until further notice

The NFL is reopening its doors next week, but it looks like the Jets will remain stuck at home for the foreseeable future.

In a memo issued on Friday, the NFL stated that team personnel other than coaches and players not rehabbing can re-enter team facilities beginning on May 19 if they are permitted to do so under state and local regulations. Under the provisions of the NFL’s first phase of reopening, teams cannot have more than 50 percent of staff in the facility and cannot exceed 75 people in the facility at a time.

“The first phase of reopening is an important step in demonstrating our ability to operate safely and effectively, even in the current environment,” commissioner Roger Goodell said in the memo. “After we implement this first phase, and as more states and localities enact policies that allow more club facilities to re-open, I expect that additional staff, likely including the coaching staff, will be allowed to return to club facilities in a relatively short time.”

Because of New Jersey’s current stay-at-home order issued by Gov. Phil Murphy, One Jets Drive will not be open for business until further notice. The same applies to the Giants, whose facilities reside in East Rutherford.

With Murphy beginning to gradually reopen New Jersey, there is a chance that both the Jets and Giants could be back at their respective facilities sooner rather than later. However, there is no definitive timeline as to when team facilities could be back up and running.

Until they can return to their facilities, the Jets will continue their virtual offseason program as they have been doing for the last couple of weeks. The hope is that New York will be able to return to One Jets Drive at some point before the beginning of training camp in late July.

I was under the impression that to keep a competitive balance that they had to all be eligible to reopen

During this first phase of reopening the following is in place:

  • Teams are not allowed to have more than 50 percent of staff in the facility, and the number cannot exceed 75 people. That total is for all club locations combined.
  • No members of the coaching staff are permitted to return to the facility in order to "ensure equity among all 32 clubs." The strength and conditioning coach may continue work in the facility only if said person "is currently participating in player rehabilitation."
  • No players are allowed in the facility other than those currently undergoing treatment.
  • Teams must promptly report any incidence of COVID-19 in the facility.
  • Teams must promptly report any change in government regulations.

The NFL will begin Phase 1 of its reopening Tuesday. Various front office staffers and other team personnel will have the option to work from team facilities, but coaches — and players who are not rehabbing injuries — continue to wait.

The league’s current line of thinking points to teams’ coaching staffs not being back at facilities until all 32 facilities are open, Judy Battista of NFL.com tweets. Several cannot open Tuesday because of stay-at-home orders remaining in effect.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said teams in his state can return to their facilities for training after a pause of more than two months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Starting today, all the New York professional sports leagues will be able to begin training camps,'' the Democratic governor said during a news conference Sunday.

The New York City area was one of the hardest-hit parts of the U.S., but COVID-19 deaths and new infections in the state have been trending downward.

Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NHL are discussing the resumption of their seasons with their players' unions.

"I believe that sports that can come back without having people in the stadium, without having people in the arena -- do it! Do it!'' Cuomo said. "Work out the economics, if you can. We want you up. We want people to be able to watch sports. To the extent people are still staying home, it gives people something to do. It's a return to normalcy. So we are working and encouraging all sports teams to start their training camps as soon as possible. And we'll work with them to make sure that can happen.''
