Does Edoga make the roster in 2020?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Wasn't drafted by current regime.

Does he have the feet?  Yes.

Is he strong enough?  No.

Will he put in the work to get stronger?  Not sure.

Could probably throw Cashman in there.  Very crowded ILB group and notable injury history.

Are we talking about Edoga or Cashman? Your post took a crazy left turn with zero explanation lol

It was about Edoga and said at the end we could easily ask the same about Cashman.  Edoga because of work ethic concerns and Cashman due to injury history and crowded ILB group.

If there’s even a shred of truth to the Jason Peters rumor, then Edoga is probably in trouble. He has some physical gifts, but there’s no way to ignore how bad he was on the field last year. His issues (according to Pauline) seem to be between the ears, so maybe the org is afraid he’ll never reach his potential. Prrsonally, I’d like to keep him and see if he develops, but the OL group is pretty crowded all of a sudden, and Fant appears to be the guy who’s going to occupy that developmental athletic tackle role.

yeah because a lot of teams cut third round picks a year into their career after they showed some promise the year before....

Chris Herndon has done less to earn his spot. His ice should be thinner than Edoga's

Edoga should make the team unless someone else is brought in.

Cashman when healthy is a good backup and STer.

Both will make it.

Don't get cocky yet about our oline, it's not like we brought in 3 all pros.

Also cashman has a unique skillset at lb. He can run and cover better than any lb we have. He's not getting cut unless it's clear his injury is basically catastrophic.

The idea that he doesn't is completely absurd. So what is it? Now, that Joe Douglas did such a magnificent job cutting all the dead weight and replaced them with 5 brand new pro bowlers? What an utterly absurd stance. The fact is, JD put a BAND-AID over a 5 year long issue. At least 3 of those guys he signed could be gone after only a single season. ALL of those players were brought here as stopgaps. Nothing more. Douglas wants to build through the draft. Players like Becton, Edoga, and Lewis are the New York Jets future OL if not they are already.

Edoga will have an opportunity just like everyone else on the roster to start on the OL. The future will tell the truth about Edoga. But to say he'll be gone because Douglas had no loyalty to a MAC pick is completely foolish. There simply isn't enough talent, even after FA, to play games claiming player X doesn't have the right bloodline.

Just to be clear, the originally poster said nothing about what you are suggesting

Gase supposedly had a role in drafting him and he can play multiple positions as a backup so what’s the issue?

To be fair, the Jets have been known to cut third round picks before the pre-season

May I introduce you to Jachai Polite.

Report: Seahawks to add sign Jachai Polite to the practice squad ...

Sure, Gase likes him. He gave him plenty of opportunities last year.

Not even close to being the same. Polite couldn’t make the field in preseason....Edoga started games and looked decent in a few of them...certainly enough to warrant a shot at the team no matter who they bring in to start.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that.  It was a question that could have just as easily had a "yes" answer as a "no".

Connor Hughes ⁦‪@Connor_J_Hughes‬⁩

The #Jets also like Chuma Edoga & believe he has long-term starting potential.

Here are my concerns about Edoga as the number one thing the Jets need him to do is hit the weights and get stronger and as we know, this regime has no ties to him:

Allowing a Pac-12 low six pressures last season, Edoga’s journey to NFL has been long and turbulent. A former five-star recruit, Edoga entered USC with a lot of hype, but injuries and inconsistent play never quite saw Edoga to live up to expectations.

https://www.conquestchronicles.com/2019/4/26/18519271/2019-nfl-draft-chuma-edoga-goes-to-the-new-york-jets-in-the-third-round

With some questions about work ethic and inconsistency, Edoga still looks the part and has the ideal athleticism to become a solid starter in the NFL.

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/chuma-edoga/32194544-4f33-7482-f251-ab502d650176

Weaknesses
  • Unusual build with long legs, thin calves and shorter torso
  • Core power misses the mark
  • Lacks fundamentals and control in his pass sets
  • Weight distribution for pass slides drifts outside and back
  • Must eliminate windup in his punch
  • Speed-to-power can walk him into pocket
  • Inconsistent base width with footwork that isn't repeatable from snap to snap
  • Falls forward into contact in effort to manufacture anchor
  • Slow to find work after his rusher voids
  • Narrow drive base allows opponents to escape from his power zone
  • Nonchalant as block finisher, allowing a win to turn into a loss

https://jetswire.usatoday.com/2019/06/27/new-york-jets-general-manager-joe-douglas-mike-maccagnan-jachai-polite-chuma-edoga-character-concerns/

Maccagnan’s last draft class with the Jets left Douglas with two players who have character concerns. Throughout the pre-draft interview process, edge rusher Jachai Polite’s work ethic was frequently questioned, as was his maturity. Offensive lineman Chuma Edoga failed a drug test at USC and was disciplined as a result. He also once shoved an official during a game and was ejected for it.

If Douglas was calling the shots in April, odds are he would’ve passed on both Polite and Edoga. Their talent is undeniable, but their character makeup does not fit with Douglas or even head coach Adam Gase.

Maybe Douglas wouldn’t have picked Edoga but he has been in the Jets building for over a year and we haven’t heard of any reported issues, concerns.

Cutting one of the few young OL is crazy. He got his feet wet last year. Seemed to start to stabilize until he was injured against the raiders. Unfortunate for him to miss the remaining games for further evaluation...

Coin flip? Edoga has NFL experience at both OT spots, some talent, and should be motivated to play with USC alum Darnold. If he's having a good offseason (getting stronger), then he'll stick. If he's not, then those work ethic concerns will get him cut.

I can’t see Edoga being cut. He was expected to be a developmental guy. So a rough start shouldn’t have been a surprise.

Yeah, agree here. Polite was a big boom or bust player. Very high risk with small chance of finding a good edge rusher. It was a bad pick for a third rounder. You gamble on a guy like that later in the draft or UDFA.

Edoga got valuable experience in 2019. Why not keep him as depth and monitor his progress for another year?  He could eventually become a starter with the right coaching and attitude.

true enough he had some bad games but he also had a couple of good ones.  it's not like he's the second coming of marvin powell.  edoga was thrown into the breach of a not very good oline to begin with.  imo he did well enough to stay but that's for something the coaches need to assess.

I think you were missing the point that it was a tongue-and-cheek kind of post...

Edoga is a bit short-he is 3+ inches shorter than Fant and Becton.

Let's see what type of physical condition he shows up to camp in.

Macc didn't seek any input from the coaching staff prior to the draft.
