New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said teams in his state can return to their facilities for training after a pause of more than two months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Starting today, all the New York professional sports leagues will be able to begin training camps,'' the Democratic governor said during a news conference Sunday.

The New York City area was one of the hardest-hit parts of the U.S., but COVID-19 deaths and new infections in the state have been trending downward.

Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NHL are discussing the resumption of their seasons with their players' unions.

"I believe that sports that can come back without having people in the stadium, without having people in the arena -- do it! Do it!'' Cuomo said. "Work out the economics, if you can. We want you up. We want people to be able to watch sports. To the extent people are still staying home, it gives people something to do. It's a return to normalcy. So we are working and encouraging all sports teams to start their training camps as soon as possible. And we'll work with them to make sure that can happen.''

Means nothing for the jets or giants

Even if NJ does the same thing it won’t matter. The Jets and Giants wouldn’t be able to practice until every other team can.

That said, this is great news. If NY is allowing it, other states should follow their lead very soon.

The NFL is “planning to have full stadiums” in the fall, league executive VP of football operations Troy Vincent says. Still, the league will yield to professionals and government restrictions before opening up the gates.

[RELATED: NY To Allow Training Camps]

We are planning to have full stadiums until the medical community tells us otherwise,” Vincent told The Team 980 (transcription via NBC Sports). “Now, remember when we’re talking — we’re talking about September, August, September. So there’s a lot that can happen here. So we’re planning for full stadiums.”

To the posters that are saying “jets play in jersey”, this doesn’t stop the jets from holding camp in New York. Nothing they haven’t done before.

Didnt Cuomo say that all NY reopening will be coordinated with surrounding states (including Jersey)? I would have to assume that this whole North East coalition is on board.

If "the man" is the Governor with the single most coronavirus deaths in the nation (by a large margin) then yes, he's definitely the man.

But at least he’s not the orange man!

Gawl!

He's been so amazing In all this I don't think it's fair to call his brother Fredo anymore. It's now up for debate

That was more of a purchasing arrangement I think with at least cooperation on things like restaurants and bars Sports teams seems very specific to ny, Nj, mass

Really lame argument. Is the governor of Alaska the best governor?

No, his brother will forever be Fredo and it’s not debatable.

Did that guy force Covid positive people into nursing homes under the threat of litigation and legal penalties if they refused?
