Assemble The Startting Line Up Of The Worst At Every Position

Recommended Posts

OK... Here is a fun exercise.

Since there has been about a thousand threads about putting together the ALL TIME JETS TEAM...

Help me assemble the worst of the worst starters the Jets ever fielded at every position.    I've got a few players in mind, but lots of holes that I'm SURE some in here can help with...

To make the team, the player has to have started for the Jets at least a few games. No obscure players, please

OFFENSE

QB: Brooks Bollinger

WR1: Steven Hill

WR2: Justin "McDroppins" McCareins

RB: Nuu Faaola

Everett McIver at left tackle might be a candidate for your list. In 1995, he faced Bruce Smith and in a play that was ruled a false start. McIver whiffed on the play, Smith hit Boomer Esiason knocking him out with a concussion that caused him to miss the next six weeks. He started three more games before a concussion meant he missed the Patriots match up. Five more games to end out the season were on special teams only and that was the glorious closure to Everett McIver's career with the New York Jets.

Everett McIver had an even more memorable incident than the one involving Bruce Smith. In 1998 McIver was still barely knocking around the league, this time he signed as a free agent with the those ranch hands in Arlington, Texas.  During training camp when tempers fray in high humidity, Michael Irvin (yeah, that Michael Irvin) 'allegedly' inflicted a two-inch cut in the neck of McIver with a pair of barber's scissors after apparently arguing over which of the two would get their hair cut first, while some team members were also in the room. McIver did not press charges, and it was rumored that Irvin paid a six-figure settlement with him to drop the matter.

How is Bollinger worse than Petty or Falk?

Surely Bubby Brister's glorious shovel pass get's him on that QB short list?

Browning Nagle for anyone who can remember him, has to be top three on the Jets list of most stupefying QBs.

Not fair.  Nagle actually had one good game

Petty and Falk did nothing but stink

Wow, I never heard that Irvin story. That is insane.

Bollinger done relatively well given the situation he walked into, even if he did look eleven years old.

Bollonger sucked but at least he deserved to be on an nfl roster even if just as a third stringer

Petty and Falk should have never been in the nfl

These are the kinds of guys I expected.

OTOH, I don't blame the player, I blame the coach.  Even the sh*ttiest fringe NFL player is such a monster that it seems wrong to denigrate them when I am such a stud athlete.  McIver was a D2 defensive lineman at Elizabeth City State.  He was signed as a UDFA Dlineman in his first camp and bounced around.  His 2nd or 3rd team decided to convert him to offensive line.  He spent time on a practice squad and near the end of his rookie year the Jets poached him.  The Jets spent a year developing him.  In his 3rd year, WIllig got hurt and Kotite threw him out there at LT.   Literally everything about the guy screamed G, but Kotite put him at LT and didn't bother to give him much help.  The results were predictable.

To his credit, McIVer went to the world league and had a few credible seasons with the Dolphins and Cowboys playing guard.  His career trajectory could have been towards Brandon Moore if he weren't so poorly handled.

Similarly, Vance Joesph at CB was the expected submission.  He was a college QB at Colorado.  The Jets converted him to CB and during his rookie year, in what I believe was his frrst game action, threw him on TIm Brown.   I think Brown (8/156/2TDs) said "That was not a good decision" in the interviews after the game.  He kicked around a year or two and then went into coaching eventually becoming the recently fired HC of the Broncos.  I think he is DC of the Cards now.

A few of the guys the OP lists were part of the #1 D in the NFL.  For C the obvious answer is an injured Spencer Long, but that is another thing that is as much coaches decision as talent issue.  Maybe Kalil.  He wasn't any better and didn't have the injury excuse.

Tony Stargell deserves a spot at CB. Worst corner I ever saw start for the Jets.

YES !! And I remember him saying in an interview for the NYT that felt he had the ability to be the best CB in the league.

Stargell gets the nod with flying colors

Now I'm inspired to discuss the worst coaches and managers in Jets history.  You have another long and distinguished list there too

What ?? No Kyle "Step Behind" Wilson at CB? One of the worst I can remember.

At least Kyle Brady played. Jace Amaro was a real disaster.

Looking back, I had forgotten how lousy a shopper Tuna was. Great coach, horrible drafter. So many guys who played a handful of games and then were gone. A few (like Farrior) who played, but elsewhere.

BINGO ! We have our CB tandem.  Stargell and Kyle Wilson.  Done deal.

Now we need the worst FS to pair with Eric Smith at SS and our defensive backfield will be *COMPLETE*

Both light years better than the aforementioned Vance Joseph.

Stephen Hill wouldn't even make the team if you limited it to Jets 2nd round draft pick busts.  I submit Ryan Yarborough and Alex Van Dyke.
