What Is *REAL* Value - Leonhard Vs. Adams

Recommended Posts

An interesting study on ultimate value...

Jim Leonhard (Proven Veteran SS Sings With Jets In 2009...

Terms were $6 million for 3 years with $1 million guaranteed. While with the New York

Jim's stats with the NJ Jets below...

2009 NYJ 16 16 76 53 23 2.5 1 0 0 1 44 44 44 0 5
2010 NYJ 11 11 61 57 4 0.0 1 1 -1 1 2 2 2 0 4
2011 NYJ 13 13 48 38 10 0.0 1 1 3 1 0 0 0 0 6

Over the course of that  three year contract, he often played out of his head AND he called all the defensive signals at the third level.  He also wracked up a total of 165 solo tackles over his $6mm contract. And we never heard a single peep from him about anything.  EVER.  Jim is a sportsman.  Oh, yeah.. He also helped out a lot on special teams...

So, Jim Leonhard's price per solo tackle was about $36,000.  And also consider all the other value added qualities he took to work with him...

Jamal, who will also be a proven vet SS wants $20mm per year.

In 2018 Jamal had 86 solo tackles.  In 2019 he had 61 solo tackles.  Lets say he has an average of the two for 2020.  Say 74 tackles.

That gives Jamal a hypothetical 221 solo tackles over three  years.

Lets figure he continues over the following three years at the same high level of performance.  BUT... He is being paid $20mm a year for his desired new deal.

That works out to a price of $271,493 per solo tackle.

Jamal:  $271,493 per solo tackle.

Jim:  $36,000 per solo tackle.

Your the GM... Knowing the market and the alternatives, do you pay Jamal $20mm a year for three to four years ???

they both played 3 years with the Jets so far

the problem with this comparison is it only focuses on SOLO Tackles

Jamal Adams is better than Jim Leonhard in the following categories:

Defensive Touchdowns: 2 to Leonhard's 0

Passes Defended: 25 to Leonhard's 15

Tackles For Loss: 28 to Leonhard's 11

Sacks: 12.5 to Leonhard's 2.5

Forced Fumbles: 6 to Leonhard's 3

Leonhard has 3 INT to Jamal's 2 INT but Jamal has 99 interception return yards to Leonhard's 45.

Durability: Jamal Adams only missed 2 games in those 3 years while Leonard missed 4 games. If memory serves his body exploded toward the end of his tenure.

Jim Leonhard was a fine player. He was also undersized, slow and concussed about a million times. He's not comparable to Jamal Adams IN ANY WAY

those who call Jamal a run stuffing safety need to look at the actual impact plays the man makes

and stop trying to pretend the team's best player is some sort of villain for wanting money for doing an OUTSTANDING job.

Consider the manpower of the defense that Leonhard played  with vs. Adams.  Leonhard didn't have to do the job of the second and third level of the defense like Jamal was tasked to do nor was Leonhard likely to be in any position to get  sacks considering Rex had an overloaded blitz coming with regularity.   The entire first and second level of the defense were often lined up along the LOS with the DB's being tasked to play coverage.  A lot of what you see in Adams stats is a product of all the band-aids Williams has to use on his defense to make up for lack of manpower and performance at the first and second levels.

that adams would be vastly overpaid at 20 million per year isn't in dispute.  but he should be paid about the same as the other top strong safeties.  even he's got to realize this.  i don't think the cowgirls would pay him 20 million and then 33 million to dak.  that's nearly 25% of the cap devoted to two players.  20 million isn't going to happen for jamal no matter where he plays.

Leonhard played on better defenses, with Revis and Cromartie at CB.

He was a veteran brought in to run a defense he was born and raised in and was a veteran player as a Jet.  Not someone just starting out.

And yet wasn't the player Adams is.  Not even close.  No matter how many excuses some try to make for Adams stats, he went out and got them.  You dont get to take them away.

Just as a 2009 contract is the same as someones guess as to what a player like Adams really is looking for in 2020

Leonhard was a unique player before the injuries caught up with him.  Crazy smart and a natural born athlete.  It was like having a coach on the field.  But he was unique to Rex's defense.  He wouldn't command a big contract in the open market, it was a special situation.

I’ve got no problems with Adams play. He’s likely the best SS in the game.

I’ve got no problems with his desire for a new contract. He only has so many years of opportunity to play and make millions doing so. Second generation NFL players are usually more attuned to the business aspect of the game.

I’ve got no problems with the trade demand. You’ve got to create leverage when you have none.

I’ve got a problem with him acting like a little bitch about it. Seriously bro! You could have left it at “pay me or trade me” and thrown in a holdout threat. That would make your message loud and clear. Everything else is just destroying your brand . . . unless your brand is “bitch-baby”.

Sign me up for Jim Leonard. At 2 million per year we could have got 10 of him for Adams and he didn't come with an instagram

Exactly...”Exhibit Z” (a through y)...why you DO NOT draft a Safety as high as Adams was drafted.

Damn, could have traded him before the Draft and added CeeDee Lamb for Darnold.   Now the “the Leader”, the “Prez” is doing his utmost best to make sure the Jets get the LEAST compensation imaginable if they do in fact deal him.

Now do a comparison of salary worth for Ronnie Lott vs Adams

this is the best comment in the thread so far

Jamal Adams wins games

at least 2 per year, by himself

it doesn't sound like much but it's a huge amount for a DB

Just like prime Revis

and just like Ronnie Lott

he's a HOF'er in the making

33 is the best possible outcome for a draft pick. If you don't pay 33, who do you you pay?

Nobody is calling him a villain for wanting money. Hes a douchebag because hes doing it in the douchiest, most tone deaf way, at the absolute worst time for this kind of crap ever, and has 3 ******* years in the league and is still essentially under contract for 2 more, with franchise tag options after that.

He wants out of NY because hes a bitch. Because the "Leadership " and "Culture Changer" narratives were a fraud. He KNOWS he isnt at a core position,  and doesn't influence games and seasons in the way a QB, OT, Premium ER, or dominant WR would. Hes just a piece, not a centerpiece, and the Jets are 2 years away (Thanks IdCagnan).

Dude is a fraud and a selfish punk. He has exposed himself as such over the last 10 months, since the "trade rumors" last season - you know, when Douglas "insulted" him by valuing his worth at TWO First Round picks AND a player.

Haven't you ever wanted to leave a job you didn't like?  Maybe he just doesn't like the work atmosphere anymore.  There have been plenty of jobs that I left, that maybe I would have stayed if someone overpaid me, but besides that, I am leaving.  He can't just do that, he has to force his way out.  I have no issue with that.
