DAMIAN WOODY - "JAMAL IS SMART"

Considering he started with these temper tantrums last season before the new CBA even existed, the evidence would suggest it's not some clever negotiating tactic as much as it is him simply being exactly what he appears to be.

You're seeing the thought process of someone who probably lives on Twitter in real time.

So the Jets will keep him just long enough to insure they get exactly what they want while sending him a place where he will be unhappy.

this is what Jets fans don't get

NFL players don't want to play for this team

geographically they are mostly from the South, MidWest, California etc there are not many players with ties to the NY area

Jamal was drafted. He did not have a choice.

any free agent worth a damn wants double cash just for showing up

and more specific this franchise is where players are unhappy

we all instantly forget the Kelechi Osemele grievance but it's still active and the players know the Jets are a garbage place to play

the way they are treating the best player they've drafted for a decade only reinforces it

Where could they send Jamal Adams that he'd be less happy than here?

Cleveland? If they pay him he'd be psyched.

Money = respect

the jets are 30 mil under the cap and haven't shown respect to any homegrown player since Mo Wilkerson

that was in 2014

I agree, he could rehabilitate his image somewhere else as people have short memories, particularly when their team is winning, but I don't think this is a negotiating ploy I think this is really who he is. He certainly isn't a leader as he's clearly a self promoter and those two traits don't mesh well too often. It's a talking the talk and waking the walk sort of thing.

I don't know if he does or should care about "his brand" or his "rep" or what ever.  He's in business to make money, no ??? If he gets more money after grandstanding for it, what does he care about what fans think ???

How about this name for a "brand"  "BROADWAY JOE"

That is a brand name we all know about, right ???  Still the face and persona of the Jets...

Namath was selected by the Cardinals and the Jets, right ???

Wanna know why he wound up with the Jets and not the Cards ???

Sonny broke out is wallet to the tune of the BIGGEST ROOKIE CONTRACT IN HISTORY...

Was Joe a doosh for going with the big money ???

Its all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I don't think the Jets are a bad place for a player to wind up.  The Jets have some of the best facilities in the league.  Their coaching staff is generally one of the highest paid in the league.  Their medial and training staff are always top of the line,  It is also the NYC media market.  What sucks about the Jets has been the inept management by the organization's ownership.  Still... That does NOT take money out of the player's pockets.  It simply keeps the fans from having a winner.  The Jets have never been know for being a stingy team.  Quite the contrary.  They are just poorly managed.  Lets hope JD changes the gigantic SH!T STEW that has been the NY Jets...

Players will play for anybody that reached the dollar amount that they and their agent deem is necessary.  Le'Veon Bell was miserable at Pittsburgh.  One of the most successful franchises in history because of their negotiating tactics with players.  So he took a powder and got paid somewhere else.  But he'd been franchised tagged a couple of times and he was sick of it.  Jamal's playing off his first contract.  He doesn't want to wait that long.

That doesn't make JD stubborn for the way he's treating Jamal or the Jets a team nobody wants to play for.  That just means that Adams is making a stink like a rabbit who's got his foot caught in the trap.  He's utilizing every means he can to get out.  Fair play to him.  He could sit out but that would just break any fake acknowledgement that he is still a part from his team.  But when all this constant sh*t storm of bad press is done.  The Jets still have the signature on his contract.  Other teams cap situations arent any better then ours until they know what the future is.  That's not going to help JD get a trade in his favor.  He'll wait out the bad press until it is.

Sorry Jamal.  You don't play in a sport where agencies can coerce front offices into doing whatever you want.  You can't use the media to turn fans into guppies into accepting whatever career decisions you want.  And I'll have to remember a Jets fan alluding to a potential former player being stoked to move to Cleveland.

(Sorry.  McTrolly.  I owe you one.)

Think past the immediate moment and the initial money grab: https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/tom-brady-led-nfl-royalties-last-season-staggering-number He could make plenty of money off the field if he doesn't alienate himself with the people who buy things. If OJ didn't do the deed he'd still be in commercials and making movie cameos. I don't know if you noticed but statistically most athletes go broke a few short years after they stop playing. So making money off the field is important long term, particularly if you want a lavished life style with all the gold plated toys.

Oh yeah, Broadway Joe. The guy who called a super bowl and wasn't under a 22 million (14 guaranteed) contract already when he chose the Jets over the cardinals. Broadway Joe who didn't alienate the team's fans and delivered and so he is immortal. If Joe had been under contract and walked out on it things may have been different. So aside from a bunch of nothing do you have a point? Capital letters aren't always your friend.

But Joe was soooo dismissive of all the poor folks in St Louis who really needed a shot in the arm.  If only they had more money to pay him.  Just think...  He could have been... GATEWAY ARCH JOE.

Joe went to the Jets instead of St. Louis for the same reason Jamal is pissing and moaning to anyone who will listen.

Leveon Bell is a good example for Adams-a great player (at the time) who plays at a position where a smart team does not want to pay what the player demands.   The record should reflect though that the Steelers were spot on with what they offered Bell.

The biggest mistake here was JD not trading Adams last year for the best offer he received.  Imagine the Jets with Cee Dee Lamb, Becton, Maye, Davis and whomever they picked in the second round (maybe even Mims)?  that is a better team than the Jets with Adams.

I think it is bad business to use the franchise tag on safeties and running backs with limited career paths.   If the Jets were a playoff team, you keep Adams at his contract and then let him walk and take the comp pick when Darnold and others need to get paid.   It sends the players a bad message to tie up players like that.

But we have seen teams, even good teams, pay up for versatile safeties as part of their strategy.  That tends to be easier to do when your QB is not on their second contract.  Mathieu was the KC Team MVP last year, not Mahomes.  Earl Thomas also was paid by the Ravens, after playing out his contract.

It is up to Adams whether we wants to sit out this year to not be grossly underpaid and risk injury.  If he told the Jets he would do that, net the share of his bonus from next year, play next year at the option rate and have the Jets agree not to franchise him, that would not be a terrible deal for both sides.

With the ways the Bills and Patriots now look, I don't know how the Jets do this year.

the signature on the rookie contract he had no choice but to sign, Yes they do have that signature

as for the cap they are top 5 in available space

you're right other teams Cowboys don't have that much space because they *gasp* pay for players

oh my heavens and stars

why have Jets fans made up this story the league is going to reduce cap space based on lost ticket revenues? How would that work? 30 teams instantly over the cap? The Jets sitting pretty with "good financial management"

follow up question when has good cap management led to any success around here?

none of this even matters with the team 25 mil under a 188 million dollar cap with Winters and Williamson yet to be cut.

they are currently UNDER THE FLOOR

So you don't have a point. Those St Louis people didn't have Joe under contract. Maybe Joe was smart enough to realize NY was a much bigger and better market where not only could he have more fun he could make more money off the field, particularly back then. Bigger font doesn't make a point. We're all aware players/everyone wants more MONEY.

Joe got all if his BIG MONEY up front.  The biggest contract to date.  Jamal did not get his big pay day yet.  There was no reason for Joe to act out because he already had is MONEY. Even then, we got plenty of diva stuff from Joe.  His socializing with A-Listers, a fur coat on the sidelines with a tag still on it, threatening to quit the team and the game because the league told him he could not continue with a particular business venture.  And yet, Joe is still an accepted and consumed Jets "brand"

If Jamal makes the plays that sees the Jets to the post season and beyond, his brand will be plenty consumable regardless of the current pising and moaning...

Trade him to Detroit

I have a different approach.

Keep him and let him play on his currently cheap deal.  And, if he wants to do things like b!tch, whine, holdout, not play well, etc. then he's mostly hurting himself and burning away 2 prime years of his career.

If Jamal WERE smart he'd voice his displeasure privately to the organization and try to get a new deal.  And, if he doesn't then play his ass off for eventual free agency.  If he's concerned about an injury then just take out a policy against things like diminished value, career-ending injury, etc. for the next 1-2 years.  The price of the policy will pale in comparison to what he'll eventually make.

That time is long gone, if it ever really existed. Once he lists teams he'd be willing to be traded to without a new contract, he's telling you straight up that he doesn't want the Jets' money. He just wants out. So now it becomes a game of how badly he wants out vs. what the Jets can get for him. I agree that the Jets should let him hold out, if that's what he chooses to do, if they can't get a decent offer for a 6'1", 215lb narcissist who runs a 4.56 40.

conspiracy time the Johnsons hired Idzik to draft like crap on purpose

i don't really believe that but it's a nice "silver lining"

everyone should visit Jason's Cap site

they are under the cap floor at the moment

not even the cap ceiling

the floor

with Winters and Williamson yet to be cut

it's not the first time they've been under the floor, in fact they do it every 4 years like clockwork

what's the 2020 equivalent of a fur coat? Gucci? I don't know

if Jamal Adams wore a Gucci coat on the sidelines,

Max would have to add servers before the board crashed

the bottom line the man outperforms his contract, the Jets promised to renegotiate and they went back on that promise

33 is right to be angry he's also got zero leverage

assuming he does shoot his way out of town eventually

none of this ends well for the jets or reflects well on the jets

Jamal started with a 20 million dollar contract with 14 million guaranteed. Joe would have blushed if he was paid that much. Joe's rookie contract of 427,000 would be worth 3.5 million today with inflation. So you were saying some thing about Joe not acting out because he got paid and Jamal hasn't yet.... Try again... Maybe with some actual facts instead of emotional rhetoric. Joe wore a fur coat on the sidelines.... Yeah, and... Did Joe demand a trade 3 years into his contract and act all passive aggressive towards his team?

Yes, and we all see what we got for showing respect to Mo Wilkerson.  We got kicked in the mouth for that.

I enjoy negotiating, and have negotiated large jobs at work for myself and for others when they needed my help.  I have negotiated new car deals for many people in my family, friends and for co-workers.

I would have gone about this negotiation so much differently than Jamal has.  I could write a book on it, but I won't bore anyone with my thoughts.  The one thing I will say about negotiating, is that I always look to build rapport.  I also look to have as much information on past dealings with other players in the league that closely mirror my own situation as possible, and use the information that I attain as leverage in working out a new deal.  If the information that I attain does not benefit me, than it is even more important to build a rapport with the side I am negotiating with, and work hard to explain why my situation is unique and different from all the others.

Unless I am negotiating with an idiot, or someone who will get shaken up by my grandstanding and demanding a trade, pursuing such a strategy that Jamal has done can only hurt my situation not only with the people I am negotiating with, but with future teams that I would want to negotiate with if and when I get the opportunity.

Remember, other players are watching, and if I allow myself to cave-in with Jamal, then I am setting myself up for failure for future deals and future players.  This is something that I would not do, no matter what the consequences.  Jamal could scream from the rooftops, but I would not jeopardize the future of the organization for anyone, especially a player that due to their position, can not impact a season like a QB, who is easily the most important position on any team.

Mo Wilkerson isn't half the player Jamal Adams is, that's the reality of their resume's.

this was a well thought out and reasonable post until the bolded statement

the Ny Jets are not over the floor at the moment

forget about the ceiling. they well below the floor

Here's the situation from 33 perspective, all moaning aside. They said they would re-negotiate the deal after the season, he made his 2nd all pro team and they didn't renegotiate.

Does anyone know if the Jets even made him an offer? Honest question.

I understand 20 mil is an absurd number but they could land this deal for 16 or 17.5 whatever.

meanwhile they are 30 mil under the cap and have room for more after they cut Winters and Williamson. They could be 40 mil under the cap by the time the season starts

Again, this post was reasonable and well thought out but Jamal Adams is not buying a New Car. He's labor stuck in a contract he had no choice but to sign.  For whatever reason he outperformed it, wants out, or wants more. Prince at Warner Brothers comes to mind.

Labor vs Capital the tale as old as time

I'll never understand how Jets fans so consistently side with capital

Especially after how the Revis thing went down.

Contra Case: they will mess around with the best player the team's drafted for a decade and wind up Jamal Adams on the Bills winning division championships

it's happened before
