Jetsfan80
https://www.nfl.com/news/leonard-williams-to-play-out-franchise-tag-with-giants Monday, Jul 13, 2020 01:16 PM Leonard Williams to play out franchise tag with Giants Nick Shook AROUND THE NFL WRITER The Leonard Williams experiment in New York -- the Giants' side of the market -- remains incomplete, and that isn't set to change any time soon. The Giants and the defensive end are on the same page in regards to Wednesday's long-term contract deadline for franchised players, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, who reported the plan is for Williams to play out the one-year tag before deciding on his future. The hope is Williams excels in New York's new defensive system headed by defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. The Williams situation isn't a typical case of a team franchise tagging a player simply to get a better idea of whether it's worth inking him to a long-term deal. New York has additional resources already involved, having sent the Jets two draft picks in exchange for Williams in late October 2019. Giants general manager Dave Gettleman fielded plenty of questions regarding Williams in March ahead of the start of free agency when the team faced the possibility of seeing Williams walk after just eight games with the team, but New York prevented such a scenario by tagging the former first-round selection. Now comes time for Williams to prove he's worth a long-term deal. The No. 6 overall pick of the 2015 draft has yet to live up to that draft position, making one Pro Bowl (2016) but recording a career-low mark in sacks with just one half of a quarterback takedown while splitting his season between the Jets and Giants in 2019. Understandably placed in a disadvantageous situation last year, Williams will now get a chance to learn a system before spending a full season operating in it. We'll see whether Gettleman is again on the podium discussing Williams positively -- or lamenting his departure -- in 2021.

Popular Post sec101row23
Leonard is making a massive mistake not taking a deal with the Giants now. The free agent market for next season is going to be a s**t show for the players, with revenues almost certain to decrease and the huge number of one year contracts given out to this years free agent group, supply will far outweigh demand. Add in the fact that the cap will remain flat or even take a little dip, and you have a bad situation for a FA player.

Maybe the Giants have no interest in extending him at this time for anything but a very lowball amount?

It was a massive blunder for the Giants to trade for Williams in the first place for the picks they gave up. Nothing they do with Leo going forward will help matters.

If this were a 10+ win Giants team last year that felt it was pushing for a Super Bowl I could somewhat argue with the Giants strategy here. But this is a building team with a young QB and young All Pro RB who will need to be paid big in a few years. Teams like the Cowboys look to be all-in for 2020 in the NFC East, not the Giants. It's kind of amazing the situation the Giants have put themselves in. We talk a lot around here about how much money to commit to non-premium positions like SS and DT. The Giants are in the same boat. They're going eyeball-to-eyeball with a very good run stuffing DT who probably wants to be paid like Aaron Donald, and then they'll need to decide what to do about Saquon Barkley whose situation could end up a lot like Le'Veon Bell's in Pittsburgh with some high-mileage seasons under a franchise tag. Paying both Leo and Saquon big money will undoubtedly factor into the calculus of how to plan for Daniel Jones coming off his rookie deal in 4 years.

This excuse is ridiculous. He's an interior defensive lineman, not a quarterback. And he is the only person in NFL history who was traded in season and didn't have to pack up and move.

Yeah, he was in a disadvantageous situation where people wanted him to play up to his draft spot, his redraft ranking and college production. Somehow failing with the Jets and getting a 2nd chance with the low expectation Gmen is a disadvantageous situation Poor disadvantaged Leo. May be true, but 29 mil of the tag is 29 mil. He wont be hurting for the rest of his life, unless he goes full Clinton Portis.

14 in Green
We paid Williams contract last year, not the Giants. So they got him for "free" last year. He will cost them 15 mill for the 1 1/2 seasons he's been there by the end of next year. If he walks at the end of '20, the Giants will probably get back the 3rd round pick in the compensatory round, so again they got Williams for only a 5th round pick. Let's see how the 3rd round pick (Zuniga) pans out as compared to Williams does for the Giants. Williams is a fulltime starter who doesn't miss starts. But yeah, the Douglas fleeced the Giants, LOL. But since no agreement was reached, the Jets get a 5th round pick from the Giants next year.

No chance we were going to sign Leo . A 3rd round pick is NOT a given nor is the one you have going to the giants due to signing of other free agents formula. The jets got a 3rd and a 5th for a guy they were not going to sign and may very well not be getting a 3rd round comp pick. It was a good sound moveby the Jets. Oh and the player is zero loss to the team, we had a 6th round pick and an udfa that were as goof if not better than Leo

The Giants paid the balance of his salary, but the Jets had a big dead money hit. Getting a 3rd and a 5th was a great deal on it's own. You're talking about money, the reality is that the Jets paid Williams @ $18M for three and a half years of service and the jints will pay him just about the same amount for for one and a half years. Jets didn't get much out of their high first round pick, but the jints are now looking at giving up a high third for a year and a half of play and maybe hoping to get 3rd round comp pick back? It's either that, or paying a good DT/DE premium DL money. I'm happy about the picks before I see how Davis performs, and I'm feeling pretty good about Davis.
