And then there was one: The 2017 draft class

Recommended Posts

It's been said that you can only evaluate a draft class properly 3 years later.  Well, here we are!

The 2017 class:

  • 1.6 - S Jamal Adams:  Traded to Seattle on Jul 25 along with 2022 4th round pick two 1st rounders, 1 3rd rounder + S Bradley McDougald
  • 2.39 - S Marcus Maye
  • 3.79 - WR ArDarius Stewart:  Out of NFL since 2017
  • 4.141 - WR Chad Hansen:  Out of NFL since 2017
  • 5.150 - TE Jordan Leggett:  Out of NFL since 2018
  • 5.181 - DL Dylan Donahue:  Drove wrong way thru Lincoln Tunnel; out of NFL since 2017
  • 6.188 - RB Elijah McGuire:  Out of NFL since 2018
  • 6.197 - CB Jeremy Clark:  Out of NFL since 2018
  • 6.204 - CB Derrick Jones:  Out of NFL since 2018

7 players who haven't played a snap of NFL football since 2018.  1 traded yesterday.

That leaves Marcus Maye, who is set to hit free agency after the 2020 season, and will now compete with Bradley McDougald (also a FA after 2020) for snaps and perhaps a contract extension.

And all that from a loaded draft year that produced the following talents:

  • Pat Mahomes
  • Deshaun Watson
  • George Kittle
  • Christian McCaffrey
  • Alvin Kamara
  • T.J. Watt
  • Tre'Davious White
  • Ryan Ramczyk
  • Eddie Jackson
  • Dalvin Cook
  • Joe Mixon
  • JuJu Smith-Schuster
  • Kenny Golladay
  • Cooper Kupp
  • Aaron Jones
  • Marlon Humphrey

And so many others.

Thanks Macc.

Lol-The Jets just received a kings ransom for his 2017 first round pick. You should be thanking Mac.

I'd much rather be discussing the recent extension for Pat Mahomes or upcoming extension for Deshaun Watson right now than yesterday's trade for the Box Safety.

Even if you keep the Jamal pick the same, there's no excuse to miss out on all this talent, which was readily available to Macc in the later rounds:

  • George Kittle
  • Alvin Kamara
  • Eddie Jackson
  • Dalvin Cook
  • Chris Godwin
  • JuJu Smith-Schuster
  • Kenny Golladay
  • Cooper Kupp
  • Joe Mixon
  • Kareem Hunt
  • Aaron Jones
  • Chris Carson
  • Marlon Mack
  • Tarik Cohen
  • CB Shaquill Griffin
  • C Pat Elflein
  • G Dan Feeney

Of course you don't.  Because the "it takes 3 years" line is complete bullsh*t.

Macc supporters loved to use that line to defend him.  But then by the time 3 years came around it was "Oh come on that's ancient history now."

Funny stuff.

Could be worse. Look at who went in the top 10

Mitch Trubisky

Solomon Thomas

Leonard Fournette

Corey Davis

John Ross

That's not an excuse for repeated failure in Rounds 2-7.

All of those teams got wins in later rounds.  The 49ers got Kittle, who will be a future HOF TE.  The Bengals got Joe Mixon.  The Bears got Eddie Jackson and Tarik Cohen.  The Jaguars got a LT in Cam Robinson and solid WR in Dede Westbrook.

We got bupkis.

The absolute worst I've ever seen over the years. Pathetic comes to mind.

Do either of you think Darnold would have brought back what Adams just did in a trade? I don't.

We just traded the best defensive player from that entire draft class yesterday...

Did Myles Garrett, TJ Watt, or Tre White all retire? Best defensive player from the 2017 draft at running his mouth. Both Watt and Garrett have 30+ sacks in 3 years and yet somehow the SS who hasn't got a interception off a starting NFL QB in 3 years is more valuable.

Marcus Maye has been better than Cam Robinson and Dede Westbrook.

We would be lucky to get a third round pick for Darnold at this point. But delusional homers keep piling on praise for a kid who has accomplished nothing but two disappointing seasons.

Hahahahahahahahaha

***Pauses, collects breath***

You really love your Safeties, don't you?

Positional importance and impact.  Understand it first, then maybe post in topics like these?

Maye was about the 9th best SAFETY out of this class, behind Eddie Jackson, Adams, Budda Baker, Marcus Williams, Desmond King, Malik Hooker, Jabrill Peppers and Xavier Woods.

Meanwhile, Cam Robinson was the 4th best OT out of this class (behind Ramczyk, Sam Tevi and Garrett Bolles) and has been an effective starter at the 2nd or 3rd most important position on the field, LT.

Westbrook, even as a true WR2 in this league, has been far more important and valuable player than Marcus Maye.

And the Jaguars got BOTH of those guys.  So yeah, their draft class was superior overall.  I'll take Fournette, Robinson and Westbrook any day over Adams and Maye.

It's a sad day when you're out-drafted by the Jaguars.

Also consider that 2017, terrible as it was, likely isnt his worst draft. 2015-16 were worse imo

Probably could put a blindfold on and throw darts at a draft board and may actually do better.

It's like he was intentionally trying to sabotage the team while doing just enough to convince the owner not to fire him.  Good work if you can get it.
