jets are never in win now mode

The Jets trading Adams is another example of this. It does not matter if you liked the trade or did not like the trade. The one thing that is true is the Jets will be less talented this year than last year on defense which was the strength of the team. Every single year the Jets are in rebuilding mode and want fans to pay for a garbage experience with hopes for the future.  I have been "patient"  since the early 70s as a kid. The only true time i had hope was when Parcells came here as I knew at the very least he would try to win now.  Imagine any other product you pay for or service you pay for providing such a low return on investment. The newer fans buy into the nonsense that we are building for the future but the fans that have been with the team for a decade or two know what the result will be. This team has one legit player (bell ) who was not used properly last year.

the only real answer to how the jets get better is a change in ownership-it all starts from the top and always has. Until then, keep paying thousands of dollars a year with hopes of a brighter future that never materializes.

this might make some sense if there were indications that adams was going to play hard.  by his own words, he was a disgruntled player and there was a distinct possibility that he would be disruptive.  this is called adding by subtracting.

Yes they were, in 2010 when they went out and got santonio Holmes. And they almost won.

Agree it’s been brutal since then and sick of waiting too. But until you have a QB and a GM who can make picks, you’ll always be waiting. For the first time in forever, you can honestly say we may have both of those components. Now you just have to give the QB a chance to develop and the GM a chance to make his picks and bring in his guys.

We’ll find out a lot at the end of this season. If Sam improves a lot and some of the draft picks pan out, we’ll all be very excited for the near future.

And this off season has been the biggest throwing up of the white flag I can remember.
We actually took the worst roster in the NFL and made it worse.

And the fan base is glorifying the GM for it. That’s how bad Jet fans have been beaten up.

very sad.

Huh ???  Granted the payers on the offensive line are not elite players. but JD took a disaster of a unit and with great economy made a unit that should be adequate until the Jets get a chance to cash in on all those draft pics.  I'm SURE with two first rounders in the next two years the Jets will be adding top notch talent to the offensive line.  JD also managed to snag Mimms who may very well be the best WR in the draft.  They casted off Robby, but they still have a speedy WR to stretch the field.  The got rid f Adams, BUT JD got the motherload of draft picks along with a marginal starting safety.  In the draft JD also used the first pick to get an offensive lineman that has uncommon qualities.

The team did not take an immediate step to being an elite team, but you can see a clear plan.  JD is geared up to make the Jets a great team within the next two seasons and he did it smartly.  He didn't leave the Jets current roster in worse shape and he didn't mortgage away their cash and cap. Can you imagine adding four first round picks in two years time ALL OF WHICH will be under rookie contract ???

They wont compete now, but they are set to be able to do so for several years to come.   I don't want a GM that tries to buy a championship by giving up the next five years due to being strapped for cash/cap. I want a roster that will always have lots of talent.  That gives you a chance to compete every single year...

JD is doing a masterful job.

I know where the OP is coming from and feel for him.

However, some advise - I would avoid using the word never.  You lose all credibility when you do and it is so obvious that the Jets have been a step away more than once, twice or even three times.

I couldn't possibly agree more with your sense of frustration. I am a very long time suffering Jets fan. If you look at last year's OL and the brutality of it, I find it astonishing that we won 7 games. That is even before the rash of injuries that we sustained and the quality of players that were out. Imagine the Jets with an actual OL last year. I mean, Philly was unable to get past their injuries as well as was Parcells when Vinny and several other key players went down in game 1 1999. I think that we addressed the line, what it will look like, is anyone's guess. The WR personnel is pretty much the same minus another primadonna who thinks that he is better than he is. The safeties are possibly still a strength of the team and I think that we finally have some optimism regarding the youth and quality of players on this team. Certainly, I would like a SB in 2020, but the damage done to this team is decades long and even with the current NFL, it will take some time to undo.  You are right, we do need to be in win now mode at some point, I am not sure who could have pulled that miracle with the roster being destroyed by GM after GM for over a decade now.

Adams has never altered the course of a game by himself. He did not keep OC’s up all night trying to game plan around him. While very good, he has never been a game altering player like Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu. To be honest I don’t think we’ll skip a beat on D this year.

If our OL is improved our D will be on the field less.  Adams becomes even less of a factor.  Having a punter who can add yards increases the field opposing O's will have to move the ball.  Adams becomes less of a factor.  Having a rookie safety with range in a bend don't break D can lead to more turnovers.

I would have preferred  to keep Adams on a new deal but two things.

First, any time someone throws a deal like this at you for one player, you have to take it. If word got out that JD turned this down, the hate that existed on this board for Adams would pale in comparison  for the hate of JD and the Jets brain trust. This goes down as a historic deal and probably the biggest thisfranchise has ever made and that includes trading for Martin.

Secondly, as far as the D being worse than last season, Williamson and Mosely didn't  play. We will be adding those two back and most likely Mosely  will play the Adams role. That isn't  exactly a downgrade. I just hope Mosely comes back at 100%.

So back away from the ledge. The Jets are not much worse if at all than last season.

Until you get stability at the QB position you are never really in a “win now” mode.  Combine that with one of the worst draft records during last 10 years and you have a non-competitive franchise.   For the first time in a long time I’m optimistic the guy in charge will make it happen.

Everyone here wants to win now.  Every single one of us.

However, with or without Jamal Adams, this is not a championship team, and as per most projections, not even a playoff team.  Vegas had us at 6.5 wins, I think, with Adams.

So, the choices are keep Adams, and delude ourselves into thinking it matters in any way shape or form.  Or, trade Adams and hope the team can get better so we actually have a realistic chance of winning.

We continue to be a rebuilding team because we continue to do it poorly.  One such example was drafting Adams over Mahommes/Watson in the 1st place.  Hopefully Douglas can stop making the bad decisions we've seen this team make for a decade.  Early returns are that he is.

Caving to Adams demands do not put you in win now mode... building enough talent to compete year in year out does. Starts with qb, then fill in enough pieces to compete, then you go in win now mode. Jets have drafted horrible for 10 years plus now, can’t win until you draft better.

We were in win now mode in 2015.  That didn’t work out so well.

win now is for established teams that already have playoff rosters and are missing a few pieces to compete for a Super Bowl and that maybe have a sword over their head(lingering cap catastrophes)

A team like Dallas last year could have gone all in for the chance at a few more pieces.  KC..  The Pats were all in.  Etc

Our foundation is very far from playoff caliber as it stands, and there is much to prove on our roster.

How the hell were the Jets going to handle Adams? He was under contract, making an undue stink, and sh*te-talking our GM, HC, and whole team?

Is Fidelio the GM going to pay a guy like that $20 million so he can parade around the locker room calling himself the Prez? He'd be de facto Prez of the Jets, that's for sure.

This has been an epic off season because 1) for the first time in ages (or ever?) we have an experienced and totally proven draft guy executing his goals, and 2) we not only avoided disaster with Adams, we built on it. Big time.

I would have traded Adams for a bag of footballs. Instead our GM landed us a haul - a haul that was pretty much more than anyone here seriously deliberated. Furthermore, that's why he's a GM and we're fans.

But to blame Adams on the Jets? Foolish. He would have pulled that nonsense on any team. Someday he'll be a sore subject in Seattle - you can bank on it.

I think under Tanny we were in win-now mode.  But trading away draft picks for "glossy names" and signing FAs is usually not the road to championships.  Getting a FQB in place is a heck of a start in today's NFL (and I still am a believer we have one though, admittedly, Sam is still unproven).  I haven't been this optimistic about this franchise since Parcells.  (And that was the most optimistic I've been ever since Namath was before my time).

I believe that JD is going to do things right.  I loved how he shrewdly traded down in this past draft.  Admittedly, I'm sure there was some luck involved (as Mims could've been taken) but I'm going to assume he took a calculated gamble and it paid off.  I've been envious of BB's "trade-down strategy" (that he used seemingly every year), which left the Pats with plenty of draft capital to back-fill guys who left because they wanted to "get theirs".  Load up on picks while building a solid team.  Then use those picks to maintain strength though the years and be able to fill holes in the case of an emergency.  I think we are very well set up to do this.

Also, let's not lose sight that the Pats' dynasty is likely FINALLY over. Not that they won't be good, or a threat to win the division, but we finally have a legit chance to "break through".  I think we're suddenly well positioned to do so.

Agree... Much of the credit and rep that went to Adams is due to Greg Williams putting Adams in position to make plays.  With a total lack of edge pressure and an average D-Line, Williams had to and did get creative and unconventional.  You'll see as good if not better of a defense this year, especially if the key LB's are all healed and ready to go.

It isn’t.

If we didn’t lose Sam to mono, a far inferior team would have gone 10-6 last year, made the playoffs, and getting all the hype that the Bills are getting.

We are a 10-6 team adding Mosely and Williamson to offset Adams, adding a markedly improved OL, adding new K and P, and getting NFL-caliber receivers back on the field in a division where we have the best quarterback.

Don’t listen to the SOJF weeping.  We’re winning the division.
