Liverpool up for sale.

Now, they're worth 4 billion, United are worth 4.2 billion. How cool would it be for the Glazers to sell United and buy Liverpool, making themselves a really quick 200 mill profit, and then having their way with that lot?

Either them or Snyder should buy that team.

Journalists already being harassed and reprimanded in Qatar just for taking random photos. You have Indian expats flooding the streets in the most blatantly staged "support" for Argentina, England, Germany etc. that I've ever seen. Some literally holding up banners that just read "Germany fans" lol.

Whole event feels like something from a dystopian novel. Russia could at least manage the whole propaganda routine competently.

"English" fans singing "Southgate is our super coach" has to be possibly the highlight so far.

And now they've banned beer sales in stadiums two days before the tournament after lying to fans for years by saying they'd have specific areas to drink.

Quote

Alcohol will not be sold at the World Cup's eight stadiums in Qatar after Fifa changed its policy two days before the start of the tournament.

Alcohol was set to be served "in select areas within stadiums", despite its sale being strictly controlled in the Muslim country.

Those in corporate areas of stadiums at the tournament will still be able to purchase alcohol.

The World Cup starts on Sunday when Qatar play Ecuador.

"Following discussions between host country authorities and Fifa, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the Fifa fan festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar's Fifa World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters," said a statement from world football's governing body.

"There is no impact to the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar's World Cup stadiums.

"Host country authorities and Fifa will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans.

"The tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev's understanding and continuous support to our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022."

If the purpose was for Qatar to sell itself on the world stage it's doing a piss poor job. Also just LOL at the corporate areas not being affected - Our civilization is in shambles.

I thought that was a solid 1st half for the US. The game was more open than I expected. Some good chances for both teams. Too bad we couldn't capitalize on any.

Yeah. Very happy with the first half.   Didn’t look outmanned at all.  Felt like YS was a little sloppy. But still solid.

Yeah, hopefully just nerves. They seemed to settle in a bit after the first 20. Not sure what's up with the US corners. Looks like they didn't make an effort on the last one.  Can't let up on a team like England. Hopefully, they come out strong in the second half. They were outplayed by Wales in the second half after dominating the first.

For those who know soccer, was today's result a good one for the US?  I think we're 0-0-2 now.  Looks like we play Iran on Tuesday.  Is that the final game in the group stage?  Do we need to win that game to advance?  And what time is Tuesday's game in the US EST?  Is it at 10PM EST?

Yes, the US needs to win against Iran.

Been really impressed with USA. Squad seems to have a great mentality - So impressed with Adams and it's a shame he plays for Leeds. Pulisic sacrificing his future kids for the cause - Love to see it.

The Netherlands are a different prospect to anything they've faced yet though - It's not an unwinnable tie but they'll be much better than England at keeping the ball and progressing in attacking areas. USA will need to take their chances and on the flip side they'll be the toughest team the Dutch will have played.

Wales were as bad as Ireland in Euro 2012. Still relying on the same guys 6 years out of their prime.

Who were the "good guys" in yesterday's game?  The Iranian players were pretty heroic to stand with the protesters, no?   And they (via threats to their families) were threatened by their government.  I felt like they were playing for much more than the US players were yesterday.

And just to be clear, the US players have nothing to do with politics and certainly were not and are not "bad guys".

Can't wait until the NFL follows soccer and adopts a FG kicking contest to resolve tie games.  PKs are an absolute joke.

The English agree historically.  But like the old saw about democracy being the worst form of government except for every other form that has been tried, nobody has ever come up with a better plan.

Morocco in the semifinal BTW.  Astonishning result.

Go England!

Happened to be with a Croatian guy following yesterday on his phone. His take as a soccer fan; they should adopt the sudden death model of the NHL playoffs. Play until somebody scores and make it sudden death so there's urgency instead of slowing it down and go to PKs.

You would need to add a sub or 2 for teams in OT to make it work.  Fresh legs would be essential, otherwise the quality of play in those circumstances would drop precipitously.

You also have to have an endpoint for OT.  Forcing teams to keep going indefinitely until a team scores has the potential to be exceedingly cruel.  So I would say adding OT periods (no more than, say, 45 minutes worth of OT?) but still finishing with PKs would be the best idea.  In which case golden goal wouldn’t work.

Shouldn't be hard to implement OT changes regardless of what they go with.
