Impressions Of Camp Via Media Reports

Honestly just reading between the lines from Cimini (who's the only guy willing to provide any analysis) this seems like a team pretty light on talent, especially on offense. Darnold seems like Darnold still (meh). Beckton is a work in progress. Quinnen Williams continues to take up space. Nathan Shephard seems to be a player. It's also extremely troubling that Mims and Zuniga- two guys expected to contribute this season have not practiced yet. Brian Poole got a new deal and showed up out of shape.

If the Jets are going to have any success, it’s going to look a lot like the Alex Smith 49ers offenses where the backs and TEs were targeted on 85% of all pass attempts while the defense can simply not get cooked over the top all day. I think they can eek out eight wins that way, but everything is going to have to go perfect and Bell and Gore have to get 4.2 ypc or so each.

Makes sense considering this year Becton will be more effective as a run  blocker than a pass blocker. Still pulled string cheese thin at WR, so using TE and RB as pass catchers make the most sense. Could change as the season go’s on with everyone getting more reps but certainly makes a reasonable launch pad.

I think with this new beefed up Oline, 3 talented RBs that can all block, word that Wesco is stepping up, Herndon shining, Kaufusi being used at TE, this tells me that Adam Gase is gearing up for an old fashioned punch you in the face game against the Bills.

All 5 of our new Olineman outside of Fant are brawlers. Look for A LOT of 2/3 TE sets with Crowder & Perriman, Herndon as a hybrid TE/WR, Wesco helping the Oline & slipping out occasionally, it will look like a 180 degree turn from last year. You won't have nearly as many 2nd 12s, we need to make that game as physical as possible & Sam will need to convert with his legs a few times to, pulling a Josh Allen on them.

Just my 2 cents. Anyone thinks we come out flinging it won't be happy but you give Sam a decent run game, short 3rd downs, we wear out the Bills front & make their CBs tackle Bell, Gore & Perine for 3 quarters & put the dagger in them on some play action & planned roll outs.

The whole season is dedicated to getting Darnold’s stat line to look like 63%/4000 yards/25 TDs/12 INTs. Literally nothing else matters to this franchise right now.

Add stay Communicable  disease free and you pretty much summed up the Jet’s Sam Darnold mission board.

To the surprise of no one, it’s not just “dehydration.”

see a lot more 2 or even 3 TE sets.  With Herndon and Griffin able to
flex out and stretch the field it makes sense

Wesco seems to've made the most of his reps with Griffin and Brown out, too. I think 2 TEs could be the base offense this year.

Bell is due another $11.5M next season and Gore is about 107 in RB years. I hope/expect that Perine will be a major part of the RB by the second half of the season. He could potentially be the only back back in 2021. It'll be good to know what they have in him.

Bell will need to churn out a minimum of 1,200 all-purpose yards to be on the roster next year. 900/300 rush/receiving yards 10 Td type of season. I hope he has it in him.

Difference between 6-10 vs. 9-7 season.

If Gase implements 2 TE zone running scheme I can see this being a possibility.

I think it'll take a lot more than that for Bell to be back, especially the receiving yards. I think for the Jets to pay that contract, Bell would have to've played a major role in Sam Darnold taking a giant leap this year.

Here's what I can gather so far based on how I know they operate:

- Darnold has better command of the offense and is processing faster.
His chemistry with the TE's and Perriman seems to be good.  White
seems to have flashed in his reps so we may have to "hide" him on
the PS

- #1 OLine has functioned decently and has better chemistry than what
was expected.  Becton seems to be a quick study who isn't overwhelmed
by what's getting thrown at him

- At WR Crowder is a given and Perriman (with his frame) seems like
he could be a more consistent replacement for Anderson.  But with no
Mims yet the rest of the group has a lot to prove

- The TE group is deep and improved.  With the questions at WR we may
see a lot more 2 or even 3 TE sets.  With Herndon and Griffin able to
flex out and stretch the field it makes sense

- Bell and Gore are both in terrific shape and will be the mainstays
of the running game.  Perine will get on the field in specials but
I think this will be a "redshirt year"

- The DLine seems to have maintained their performance from last year.
But Williams has flashed and if he performs (he better) up to his
draft status this group will take a huge step forward

- Nothing special has been reported about the LB's but it seems like
Jenkins has been flashing consistent edge pressure

- The injuries to Poole and Desir seems to have helped the CB group.
Because Austin and Wilson have increased their reps and have been
making plays pretty consistently.  When the vets return we may actually
have a deep/talented group

- The safety group is playing out like I thought.  McDougald has moved
into FS, Maye has moved into the "hybrid" role and Davis is a "chess
piece".  And all have been consistently making plays

We are still blind and won't know anything until the BUF game but those
are my 2 cents

Disagree on some points.

Quinnen is flashing more than establishing dominance. It’s not consistent enough for victory laps or applause.

Its come up a few times but the OL has been bad in the run game. This could because we have a very good run stopping DL but it’s a little concerning.

If he’s good but not All-Pro good, the Jets could give him a two year, ~$15 mil deal that’d be more than he’d get elsewhere. Bell knows that 30 year old is the cliff for him, and Douglas giving him slightly above market would be fair.

Exactly right. With 2 firsts for the next two years, if they think #14 is not the guy, they can do something about it. On a side note, am I the only one that thinks these rookies who keep missing practice would not be getting away with this back in college?

Gase said something about Mims a week ago which I thought was telling. He said that Mims is a guy who’d rather be out on the field doing it (learning the offense) than sitting in a classroom. It could very well be that Mims isn’t the sharpest of tacks and they’re holding him back until he knows where to line up and not screw up the offense.

We may have to be more of a running team until we get better outside receiving talent(or the guys we have better) and the Oline gels after a while.

practice and game day are two different things.  i know parcells said you play like you practice but there are different ways of evaluating how a team practices.  as for the being light on talent, yes they are, at least established talent.  but that's why they play the came and keep score.  and winning has to do how well they play as a team not just because this guy or that guy is a superstar.  as many have pointed out, jamal adams is 15 and 23 and it can be argued that he is one of the superstars in the nfl at his position.

It ws like Curtis Martin once said that Chad P. was a bad practice QB, but much better in actual games.

Wow! You drew that conclusion from Gase stating a football player would rather be playing the game than sitting in on X’s and O’s ? guilty on all counts GIF by Oxygen

The Jets were #2 stopping the run last year. That was basically WITHOUT much help from QW. So, it would be wrong to think this young Dline (Shep, Foley, Phillips) and the old guy McClendon aren’t  pretty damn good!
You add to that successful Dline a motivated, IN SHAPE QW (There was a reason this guy was selected #3 overall), working against an Oline trying to gel, I would imagine they would have some issues.
The great thing about it is it’s sharpening the Oline. That’s why young talented hockey players move up to play against the big boys. Our Dline makes it tough to get blocks at the 2nd level.

I expect Perine's role to be the goal line specialist as the season progresses.  Perine has a knack for getting in the end zone from inside the 5.

The one thing Bell has never been that great at.  The only weakness in his game.

I'd love to see this.  Gives Becton some help on the left side and puts the best receiving options we have on the field at all times.

Not that we can pull off what Belichick did, but the Patriots once played an entire season with a base 2-TE look and it worked well.  It's somewhat backwards in today's NFL but in that sense it could also work (zigging while others zag).
