This Brewing '20 WR Fiasco - Darnold Who?

JetsLife

Recommended Posts

Bad luck happens, sometimes a position sustains a rash of injuries. But in a pass-happy offensive league, Douglas entering 2020 with a WR corps where that had to stay healthy for it break right ... well, it's been widely documented it's a concern for the Jets' fortunes this season.

But let's assume Douglas isn't being totally truthful this isn't a rebuilding year (of course he can't say it). So assuming it is: in 2020 don't the Jets at least want to confirm or deny on Darnold's long-term viability? And to do so, doesn't Sam need a 21st-century offense to play with? Like the one last night Mahomes masterfully orchestrated?

In one off season it was impossible for Douglas to stack KC-level talent around Sam. But since Sam has had two horrible supporting offenses starting his career - making it extremely difficult to properly evaluate his long-term potential - if your Douglas wouldn't you have at least provided Darnold more at the WR position? Even just out of depth concerns?

Because now we're looking right down the barrel of another season of Darnold Who? Another season of incomplete information assessing him, due to another subpar offense around him. This year most glaringly at WR (assuming new OL is adequate). See article below - which I don't agree with overall, but I can see the author's point.

Alas, maybe Douglas felt he had put together a strong WR unit. Maybe he had high hopes for Vyncint Smith as his WR4, and since he went down it's just been plain bad luck with Mims, Perriman, etc. Or maybe he's not at all sold on Sam, and the James Morgan pick is another indication of this. Because in the 4th round Douglas could've selected another potential weapon for Sam.

How they’ve supported this kid is a ******* travesty.

The year he was drafted they should’ve followed it up by drafting a tackle and receiver.  Then the next year they should’ve drafted a receiver and a center.

Could Mahomes or Watson thrived with this cast of players?  I don’t know.

Nah man.  We needed 28 year old small school rotational DT Nathan Shepherd.  He's been indispensable to Sam ever since he arrived!

At least we finally have a GM who values the OL.  Hopefully Becton is about to start a HOF career and hopefully the rest of the OL (especially McGovern) will be reasonably solid.

As for the WRs, they certainly leave a lot to be desired but it's more important that we first protect Sam.  Also, at least Mims has some high-end potential so there's reason to hope we have one big piece already in place.

We also have a bunch of draft capital the next 2 years to really start to build this team and I expect a lot will be done to help the offense.  Of course, we're wasting Sam's cheap years but that's what all of us (except SAR) were complaining about when CJ waited until after the draft/FA to fire Macc.  Water under the bridge at this point though.  At least we have a lot of cap room next year to pay Sam with.

I normally don’t get negative on here but Darnold being sent out there in his 3rd year with a banged up Perriman and Chris Hogan as his starting WRs is criminal. We have 5 new Olineman who have never played a game together, including an LT whos never taken an NFL snap.  We have more cap space and draft picks than we know what to do with as well as having our QB on a rookie deal yet we still send him out there with this asinine excuse of a WR room. Just once I wish this team would do right by the kid we invested an insane amount of draft capital in.

so you don't like the cap space?  just who were they supposed to sign?  conklin?  and even there so instead of just having 5 olinemen who haven't played together they'd have a lot of expensive olinemen who never played together.  about the only big time free agents they could have squandered their money on were wr's but even they cost quite a bit and are prima donnas.

Two things can be true at once:

1. The Jets have not supported Sam with talent as much as the Fans want.

2. Franchise QB's elevate the talent around them, Sam hasn't done that (yet).

Sure, giving Sam two #1, top 10, draft pick WR's would have been great.  And maybe we still will.

It'd also be great if Sam can elevate what he has, like legit franchise QB's do.  And maybe he still will.

People complaining about "fairness" need to get a life, nothing whatsoever in life, or sports, is "fair".

Champions overcome, losers complain and go home.

We'll see what Sam does starting tomorrow.

The excuse train is rolling!!!

Isn't it kinda childish and bizarre?

A player not being held responsible for his performance b/c of some weird collective fear that we picked a mediocre quarterback while using the 6th pick and 3 2nd rounders....

I dont know what Browns fans feel or think about Baker....  and using teh 1st pick on him...

but i can fathom that it isnt quite as cringeworthy as this....

Well here is a thought I just had. Building a WR core like KC and other teams that Brees, Big Ben, etc. are able to get is as difficult as build a D like the old Ray Lewis Ravens. And then hard to keep around since they all want top $ which the cap won't allow. So, this is what we do need to see out of Darnold. Can he work well enough with WR cores that may change from year to year and not always be upper echelon?. What does that really mean, well it means based on his ability he makes the WRs he has very good and raises their level of play along with the TEs and RBs as long as the Oline does its job. Heck, Brady would always b!tch about it but that is what he always did with NE since they would many times let good players at WR go or trade them so they can maintain cap and draft picks to serve other needs and he always raised the play of the WRs with his ability. Yes, this is how we really see if Darnold is the real deal, and not if he plays well when he has all world WRs at his disposal. Remember the problem with Sanchez. Heck this is how I learned this now. Sanchez had everything around him great and perfectly setup with a Solid Oline,, D, and WRs like Holmes and Edwards that made him look much better than he really was and not the other way around. How does it turn out?. It shows at the worst time then that you don't have a Franchise QB. No, we are setup fine now. Darnold will be evaluated this year for the way I just stated, and then in 2021 after 10 draft picks and likely the top 3 cap amount in the NFL. Then Jets determine and probably do pick up the 5th year option, but at that point if things don't look good in 2022 we have 2 number 1 picks again and can decide if we need to use them both to trade up and get another QB if it seems Darnold is not the answer. Doesn't mean he has to be unbelievable through all this. He can just be somewhere between pretty good and very good and maybe we use all those draft picks to just build enough around him to make a run. Anyhow, everyone on the forum enjoy the game this Sunday. Its nice though all of this we have gone through and are still going through to be able to relax and watch our Jets play. Things could be worse for those who themselves or their families/friends have been affected by this unfortunate outbreak.

You tell us.  You're the one who thinks he did.

The Jets were on a path to go 0-16 without him... Put up a couple a good games that won despite running for his life on every other play and no supporting run game and a coach that refused to make it easier for Darnold.

I would say the fact they still won 7 games was lifting his team, considering terrible OL(that can barely make an NFL roster let alone start on an NFL team) no WRs, 3rd and 4th string TEs and an RB that needs a top ten OL to produce. NFL analysts ranked the offensive roster as one of the worst in the NFL in the last 15 years... Yet still won 7 games. I think that deserves some credit.

Defense helped but they still had to score points.

Seems like a great kid. Heads on straight. Earnest. I just have serious doubts he'll be a top 10 QB inthe NFL.

Understood... Tough to argue otherwise... I think he proves to you that he is worthy this year despite the lack of talent surrounding him.

by selecting b/u QBs (that are among the worst b/u in a 32team league)  that can offer NO COMPETITION to Sam (coddling)

they also damn themselves to being unable to even compete when those b/u are pressed into service.

When is the last time we had a bowl winning QB as a backup??

This take is unreasonable.
Veteran franchise quarterbacks elevate lesser teams.

Their first 2-3 years in the league they need a support cast before taking over as the man and knowing the offense inside and out.

When a kid is still learning  how to be a pro, and multiples offenses in his short career, he’s still finding his own way.

You’re asking him to elevate a team like a five year vet in the same system.

Maybe... Both narratives work but seimian did decently in Denver when surrounded with better talent.
