4? I think he has the talent to get up to "league average" some day but it's not a process I want to watch, it'll probably take another organization or two, and it's not worth the investment we made in him. I don't know, I think Darnold and even the coach are pretty likable guys, so that just makes it worse if I have to watch another fifteen weeks of this.

Not sure whether I could put a number on it, but my confidence level is fairly shook at this stage. His front office and coaches haven't exactly helped him, but Darnold is now into his third season as an NFL starter, so he needs to be demonstrating that he's learning from past mistakes and not repeating the same errors. It's not looking good at this stage.

I started the season at 7, but that was partly due to naivety and hope. Realistically he was probably a 5, and after today he is trending down. 4 at best

Of the guys Sam played with last season only Crowder and Bell (half the game) were the same today I believe. The other 8 were all different. That’s no excuse but in a season with limited practices it can make it challenging... as does the Bills defense.

I was a 5 before the game.  3 after.  Nothing has changed for the better.  Its starting to look like the jets will need to draft another qb.  Hopefully its not until after a new coach is hired.

Yesterday was definitely the lowest point yet in terms of my optimism with Darnold. It’s the first time I can remember watching him and thinking “he’s not the guy.”

The supporting cast isn’t doing him any favors but he’s still making the same boneheaded decisions and some of his throws were just awful. He looks rattled.

I think back to how he looked down the stretch in 2018 and man, I really feel like hiring Adam Gase is the biggest mistake this franchise has made since I started following the team. They guy is just awful. I think we’ve kind of ruined the most promising thing we’ve had.

I am still high on darnold he has reminded me of favre in his short career in that most games he is pretty decent and sometimes he just lays an egg but when he is good he is really good and sometimes you just gotta deal with the bad. I know that egg he laid last night left a sour taste in our mouths but let's not forget how he finished up last season. I don't know if he is our long term answer but my suspicion is that he bounces back from that ugly loss and looks better in the games to come. I think even if we got the first overall pick next year we would be better off selling it to the highest bidder and really building around darnold.

Gase is an awful coach and that is evident in not just the offense but the entire team.  And I understand the lack of continuity with our players and the lack of separation from the WRs, but Sam isnt improving the little things.  Back foot throws, poor mechanics, bad interceptions - its been 3 years and he is still making those mistakes.  

Watching as much football as I did yesterday, its ridiculous how bad our play design and play calling is.  Teams around the league are consistently getting players open or out in space.  Our best play yesterday was a WR screen where Crowder almost ran into his own guy and happened to break free.  On the biggest 3rd down we ran a TE screen?????????????? that turned into a fumble.   I really dont understand how Gase can be this bad.

No coach can make the throws for you. The coaches job is to give you opportunities.

My confidence in him is about a 3 or 4 now, and I was a huge Darnold guy. 

 

I legitimately feel like Gase/Loggains have ruined him. He looks worse, technique and mechanics wise, than he did in his first year. It feels like he started to get over his issues towards the end of his first year and was prospering, and he's just been left to waste. 

To draft a QB at three, who is so young, and not give him a specialist QB coach for his first three years in the league, is an absolutely criminal waste of talent.

I can see where many folks are pretty emotional about this.  Fortunately, I do not let my emotions interfere in my decision making.

What really pisses me off are the players staying in the locker room for our anthem!

If we stink enough to get the #1 overall pick then I say we take Trevor Lawrence, since he is a better prospect than Sam (that's absolutely no knock on Sam btw).  I don't expect the Jets to be anywhere near that bad this year though (despite yesterday's abomination).  I'm with you that Sam will bounce back and play much better than he did yesterday.

You didnt need to even look around the NFL, just look at the other side of the field and what Buffalo does to get their offense going.  Screens to multiple players all over the field, boot legs, roll outs, play actions (they werent running the ball well yet still effective), motion, outlets, misdirections....they had guys wide open all over the field by using creative play calls.

Buffalo has done an outstanding job of creating an offense built for Josh Allen (similar to what Balt. has done for Lamar Jackson) and here we are with Gase, running a complicated, slow, boring offense, predicated on WR's getting open down field and NONE of them can create any meaningful separation and when they did Sam missed them or they dropped it or they had a defender literally in their back pocket. 

Then you look at the Jets and we do NOTHING to make the game easier on Sam and easier on the absolutely atrocious weaponz he has, even the plays that we did scheme Bell open the level of difficulty on those throws is so high it stupid.

Agreed.   I posted in another thread last night that nothing comes easy for this offense.  Nothing.  It’s a poorly constructed offense with players that are either not fits for it or are simply bad players.   Gase as a play caller has zero feel for what is happening on the field.  When Sam scrambles and gets outside the pocket, none of his receivers break off their routes and come back towards him, they just continue on the route as called.   This has to be coaching, if you were coaching them to adjust to the pressure and the scramble we wouldn’t see this happening.  
 

Even Gase’s screen game is simplistic and ineffective.  Look at what Sean Payton runs in New Orleans, his screen game is so creative, obviously it helps having the players he has, but the structure of the plays are so effective.  I think we are in a really bad situation where the roster and the play caller are just bad.

lol - when they went 3 and out in back to back drives to start the game, Sam looking clearly rattled, brand new OL looking a bit shaky in pass coverage,...how did they respond on the next drive?  5 wide on 1st down, threw it 3 straight times, used 10 seconds of clock.  3 and out.  I mean, what the actual **** is wrong with you as a play caller in that situation?   Then next drive, 2 beautiful runs to start the drive?  1st down, maybe play action, get an easy look for Sam?  Nope, telegraphed the run, ran it straight up the gut and stuffed for no gain.  Like you said, no feel. 

Payton uses everything, with loaded weapons!!!  The Sanders TD, created beautiful motion, got the mismatch, wide open, I could have thrown that TD.  Did you see any of the Chargers game?  Completely different offense for Tyrod Taylor than what Rivers ran.  The Jags?  Completely retooled the offense for Minshew.  He had more TD's than incompletions. 

The Jets breaking in 8 new offense players this season from last, did nothing different.  Nothing.
