Imagine having Darnold AND Lawrence ... That is not all that bad.

If we draft a Rd 1 QB, we immediately need to trade Darnold.  The May 3, 2021 deadline for the 5th year option would loom large in that decision.  Any team trading for Darnold would want to be able make their own decision on whether he's worth the $25M and extra year in 2022.

My own eyes. Robbie was a one trick pony with the Jets. He was great at stretching the field.  Running other routes he looked disinterested at times and I rarely ever saw him come back upfield to aid Darnold during scramble drills.  Now , I'm sure I'm over generalizing and if you broke down film you'd find some instances of him doing those things , but again I'll claim it was rare.  Perriman  especially last year with Winston at OB was very good at the speed routes but more importantly  had a nice rapport with Jameis when plays broke down. In my eyes he's a better overall wr .

That's nice, but production wise, he hasn't been better than Robby.

a plan that worked pout badly due to injury (so far) isnt necessarily a bad plan...

V smith was a b/u   hurt...planned starter perriman injured in camp a bit, then again in week 2, mims out the whole time...

now chowda is hurt....

as for reliability...   also the planned startin Lbs are done...   ivene the 1st backup is out....

how can a reliably bad team become reliable in teh teimehe has had?

i would like to see a list of all the guys macc signed...   keep it as an emetic in case someone in my house o/ds ...

The Jets ranked 31st of 32 teams in players drafted from 2015 to 2018 that are still in the NFL, according to a study by salary-cap-research website Over the Cap. Two of Maccagnan’s three second-round picks—wide receiver Devin Smith and quarterback Christian Hackenberg—washed out of the NFL by 2018, an astonishing figure considering over 90 percent of second-rounders taken since 2015 are still in the league. Perhaps realizing his bad luck, Maccagnan traded New York’s three other second-rounders to move up and draft Sam Darnold in 2018, which will be his lasting legacy with the team.

so Mac got the really big one RIGHT?

Meanwhile Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen continue to make that move look worse and worse every week.

I agree with this.  He certainly didn't ignore the position.  And, as I've said, I like his goals of getting younger, higher upside guys with great athletic profiles to build around.  Perriman and Mims have very strong height/speed/athleticism combinations.... but they're both inexperienced and counting on either of them to be a WR1 or WR2 right out of the gate was risky.  Guys like Vyncint Smith, Berrios, Cager are supposed to be the icing on the WR cake....guys who, if one of them hits, takes the group from good to great because you now have a difference maker at WR4.  The problem is there's no cake to put that icing on.  Joe had a great approach for the bottom of the depth chart, but it can't be the approach at the top.  Joe D came to this realization only after injuries in Camp when he signed Chris Hogan, a decent dependable veteran.  He needed more experience at the WR spot.

I forgot he did sign Moncrief too (in addition to Hogan) once guys started dropping. This situation with the WRs is just absurd and laughable but no doing of the GM. Even if we had re-signed Robbie, with our luck, he'd be on that list too.

Meh.  With so few teams projected to have an abundance of cap space next season, that's not necessarily true.  The top-end free agent WRs may not come here, but there will be quite a few good Tier 2/3 FA's in next year's class.  Not ALL of these guys are getting re-signed:

  • Allen Robinson
  • Kenny Golladay
  • Chris Godwin
  • JuJu Smith-Schuster
  • Marvin Jones
  • T.Y. Hilton
  • A.J. Green
  • Larry Fitzgerald
  • Will Fuller
  • Sammy Watkins
  • Corey Davis
  • Kenny Stills
  • Curtis Samuel
  • Phillip Dorsett
  • Tajae Sharpe
  • Dede Westbrook
  • John Ross
  • Chris Conley
  • Keelan Cole
  • Demarcus Robinson
  • Willie Snead
  • David Moore
  • Chris Moore

Sure not all of those guys will get resigned, just the ones that could make a difference here.   Looking at feee agent lists in September is futile.   Again, only the most desperate will take JDs money, and if he does stick to his strict salary guidelines then I doubt we’ll see much benefit from free agency.

Right but in September of last year, the 2020 WR FA list looked dire even then.  That's not the case this year.  It's a MASSIVE difference.

And with the cap likely going down (or at least not going up by much) and lots of teams headed for some version of cap hell, it's going to be very different when it comes to which teams can afford their upcoming FA's AND which teams can afford OTHER teams' FA's.

I mean just look at the list when you consider the cap situations of each team in question.  Note that the 2021 cap space estimates are based on a $185M estimated cap, and assuming these teams let all of their UFA's walk:

  • Allen Robinson:  Bears ($9.8M cap space currently, $8.2M in 2021)
  • Kenny Golladay:  Lions ($16.5M in 2020; $17.9M in 2021)
  • Chris Godwin:  Bucs ($2.8M in 2020; $28M in 2021)
  • JuJu Smith-Schuster:  Steelers ($9.7M in 2020; -$16M in 2021)
  • Marvin Jones:  Lions ($16.5M in 2020; $17.9M in 2021)
  • T.Y. Hilton:  Colts ($9.9M in 2020; $77.7M in 2021)
  • A.J. Green:  Bengals ($10.6M in 2020; $38.3M in 2021)
  • Larry Fitzgerald:  Cardinals ($9.4M in 2020; $33.7M in 2021)
  • Will Fuller:  Texans ($9M in 2020; -$4.5M in 2021)
  • Sammy Watkins:  Chiefs ($6.5M in 2020; -$11M in 2021)
  • Corey Davis:  Titans ($8.2M in 2020; $15.6M in 2021)
  • Kenny Stills:  Texans ($9M in 2020; -$4.5M in 2021)
  • Curtis Samuel:  Panthers ($6.5M in 2020; $23.5M in 2021)
  • Phillip Dorsett:  Seahawks ($4.9M in 2020; $31.2M in 2021)
  • Tajae Sharpe:  Vikings ($590K in 2020; -$5.9M in 2021)
  • Dede Westbrook:  Jaguars ($24.7M in 2020; $84.8M in 2021)
  • John Ross:  Bengals ($10.6M in 2020; $38.3M in 2021)
  • Chris Conley:  Jaguars ($24.7M in 2020; $84.8M in 2021)
  • Keelan Cole:  Jaguars ($24.7M in 2020; $84.8M in 2021)
  • Demarcus Robinson:  Chiefs ($6.5M in 2020; -$11M in 2021)
  • Willie Snead:  Ravens ($13.8M in 2020; $52.3M in 2021)
  • David Moore:  Seahawks ($4.9M in 2020; $31.2M in 2021)
  • Chris Moore:  Ravens ($13.8M in 2020; $52.3M in 2021)

Based on these numbers, Allen Robinson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, one of the Detroit guys (Golladay/Marvin Jones), Will Fuller, Sammy Watkins, Kenny Stills, Tajae Sharpe and Demarcus Robinson are all strong possibilities to be goners.

Plus there could be others of significance who get cut due to cap issues.  The Saints, Eagles, Falcons, Rams, Raiders, Bills and Packers are all projected to be over the cap next season.  So expect to see veterans like Emmanuel Sanders, John Brown, Tyrell Williams, DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery spring loose as well.  No, none of them might be worth adding, but it will help flood the market at WR.

Every year people get all giddy about free agency, and every year it’s the same thing around here.  The Jets will not be these players first, second or even third choice as to where they will want to go, let’s face it this situation isn’t getting any better to attract new players.   Any vet that could make a difference here will have to be acquired via trade.

This isn't a typical free agency coming up.  With the cap going down, there will be precious few teams with the cap space available to keep or sign a lot of the guys I listed above.

You have no idea what the cap is going to do right now.  Have you seen the contracts given out lately?   Do teams look worried about the cap?

Read my above post again with the estimated figures, per overthecap.

$185M is a fair estimate, considering the league said it could go as low as $175M.  Even if the cap ends up $200M, a bunch of teams will be in trouble:

We’ll see come March, the cap is easily manipulated and teams can push money down the road very easily.  Teams don’t lose players they really want to keep due to cap implications.

I don't know how the Saints and Eagles are going to be able to "manipulate" being over $70M over the cap, lol.

I've never seen estimates like these, ever.  12 of 32 teams projected over, and 5 of them $20M+ over.

Talent will break loose.  Not as much as we'd hope, for sure, but there will be WRs available.

If the Jets end up with the #1 pick and decide to use it on a QB I think they'd be smart to trade Darnold BEFORE the Draft.  All leverage disappears once the selection of Trevor Lawrence is made and once other teams have settled on their future QB plans.

I would agree with this.  The moment the Jets know they're taking a QB is the time to trade Darnold.

I just don't believe the Jets will actually pick # 1 until it happens.  And if we don't pick 1st we can't guarantee we will be taking a QB or, at least, that we're going to get the QB we like best.

And we can't just take "a guy."  It has to be THE guy that they want.  We've gone down the Geno Smith, Bryce Petty, Christian Hackenberg path of throwing QBs against the wall to see if they stick.  If you're going to settle for your 2nd or 3rd choice then you keep Darnold for year 4....and probably click-in the option year.

It really depends on the player. Someone like a Watkins who is currently a #3 in KC might want to come here and get out of the shadow of Tyreek Hill. Anyone who just wants to win probably won't come here , someone just looking for a payday might.

That’s the problem, we all know how well those players have worked out for this franchise in recent memory.
