Darnold is a product of his environment. He's a product of not being all that good of a prospect in the first place, and then getting worse in his surroundings. The only thing he ever does well is when he is improvising. But that's not sustainable in the NFL. Even the most mobile QB's have to be able to throw from the pocket, consistently. He can't. His ceiling was, and still is, Andy Dalton. In short, not good enough.

He has four games with 300+ passing - week 2, 2018 (20-12 loss to Miami), week 15, 2018 versus the Packers, week 6, 2019 (24-22 win over Dallas) and week 12, 2019 (34-3 win over the Raiders). So no, he doesn't have five 3+ touchdown games in his career or five 300+ passing yard games in his career. Joe Burrow almost has as many 300 yard games in his career and he is heading into Week 4. Sam wasn't give much to work with, but his production has been quite poor to say the least.

Darnold Schwarzenegger
Darnold has been ruined. The damage that Macc & Gase have done is irreversible IMO. Its sad to watch. He looks defeated. The only thing keeping me on the ledge is Joe Douglas. Hes my last hope. I feel like if he can't turn around this dumpster fire, no one can.
ryu79
Since he's our starting qb and we've got lots of season left, I'll reserve judgement for now and hope he works his way out of this as we get healthier. As tantalizing as it is to 'trust the process' again, I'd much prefer we see some real improvement from him in rest of season and build around as opposed to nuking. At some point someone has to break this cycle...
varjet
Even if Gase has to be fired now and Cooter put in charge of Darnold, the most important thing right now for the Jets is to improve and fix Darnold. Either they keep him or trade him, but the most important thing for the Jets is to fix him. So trade more defenders, lose the rest of the games, and fix Darnold.
Jimmy 2 Times
I can't read through seven pages of this. Fact is, the kid got shell shocked last year and hasn't recovered. He needs to sit and backup Brees for a couple years and then, maybe he bounces back. They need to draft Lawerence or Fields and sit them a year behind a vet while JD continues to build the team. The extra picks will help so long as they don't have to burn them all trading up. The only thing that can ruin Douglas' plan is a few meaningless wins. That's why Gase has to stay the whole year. I am not saying he doesn't look like one. But if you draft another qb, and throw him in there with no online, no running attack, no wr, the next one will bust too. The lack of talent is amazing. Arching Manning was the biggest, worst fcking bum that I've ever seen play. He got demolished week after week after week, year after year after year. He was so stressed his cystic acne almost put him in the hospital aside from the beatings he took. That being said, how much of a bum was he really? His supporting cast was a revolving garbage heap. I can't stand Stage Father Archie for a plethora of reasons, but I'm only bringing him up to demonstrate the point that Sam is starting to fall into the category of being a hell of a lot better looking with good skin and that's about the only dividing line right now. Douglas did the painful, but smart, thing. He looked at the overall state of the roster and determined that the Jets are not going anywhere this year, saved the majority of his money, traded off an overrated malcontent for a haul, and is patiently waiting. We all want “microwaved results”, but it’s just not feasible with the roster Maccagnan left behind. You hearing this from the water cooler in one jet drive? jetscrazey
Sam Darnold may be a bust, he's still only 23 and has had the worst roster in the league and crazy ridiculous injuries to the offense. His career arc may not be in sync with the patience of this front office if the #1 pick were to present itself. In truth it's really the Jets organization under the Johnson leadership that is the real bust. Just a gutted roster and a culture of losing. Woody and Chris are in over their head, they need to give the keys to Joe D. to hire the next head coach and step away.
