Mike Shanahan

His offenses could consistently run the ball no matter who was lining up in the backfield. He has proven that he’ll tailor his offense to his players strengths and not stick square pegs into round holes. He’s one of the most well connected guys in the entire NFL landscape who has consistently put together coaching staffs with great young talent.

And before you tell me he’s too old, he’s the same age as dudes like Belichick, Carrol and Arians.

We don’t need some flash in the pan, “hot name” assistant coach.

We need a goddamn grownup who will command the room and demand respect immediately.

Washington tried this and it was an unmitigated disaster. He's consulting with his son now, which is probably best for his age. He had his time, it's over.

Greg Roman is growing on me.  If there's someone who can redesign an offense to Sam's strengths, it's him.  And we'll never have to worry about not establishing the run with him.

Whoever it is, we need a guy who can pull off an extreme culture change on a Parcells kind of level.

Sam probably isn’t going to have anything to do with the decision.

Williams is so in charge of the defense. You don’t ever hear Gase even comment about the defense. And the D is terrible. So if you fire Gase why hire him. Over the years Roman has been knocked for being unimaginative in terms of organizing an offense. Not sure about Leftwich he seems to be doing OK with Brady. One thing for sure. I’ve defended Gase so far but it’s not just the 3 Ls it’s the team’s total unpreparedness. They have nowhere to go but up. But it’s beyond terrible. If he can’t fix it he’s got to go. As for personnel decisions. He got his guy to be in charge. So he has a lot to do with those decisions.

If they get the top pick, probably.  But it's Joe Douglas's decision.  This team will get healthier at some point and probably will find a way to get a couple of wins.

True.

the thing is though, a few wins isn’t enough to save Darnold here. There are going to be other interesting QBs in the draft and you have to think that Douglas Is going to be scouting them.

Lawrence is the dream, but he’s also far from the only way that Darnold gets replaced.

Greg Roman or Arthur Smith

Both guys know how to design an offense around the talent on the roster.  Im just not sure Smith has enough experience to be the HC.

Roman has been with some good coaches and has enough experience to lead an organization.

Either guy would be great to work with a rookie QB.

How would it do that if Joe Douglas gets to pick Greg Roman?

I agree that not tying the GM and HC together has been a problem for the Jets since they fired Tannenbaum, but if Douglas gets to fire Gase and hire Roman, Roman would be his guy and you can tie them together.

You are right on that. But JD has a 6 year contract, he could very well have a shot at a 2nd coach if he drafted decent and Roman still shat the bed.

Mike Leach.  These crazy, throw it all over the field college coaches (Kingsbury) can actually succeed in this version of the NFL where you should literally throw it 65% of the time.

The dude is a madman with a huge ego.

Totally in on that move. Hey, at least the jets would be fun again.
