Joe Douglas must share in the blame for this Jets debacle

A few of those guys you absolutely cannot build around.  Even among the good ones on the list, there's a reason those teams let those guys go.  With all of the heavy spending teams have been doing lately, I find it hard to believe they were all purely economic casualties.

But even among the ones you CAN build around, free agency is a 2-way street.  As we established in another thread, the Jets are the team agents use to get other team's into a bidding war, and are one of the last destinations a FA would choose.  Thus we're talking about overpays.  Massive overpays on long-term deals without first building a core is exactly what Mike Maccagnan did here, and it never ends up with a positive result.

This team has no core outside of (hopefully) Becton.  None.  Douglas walked into a situation where the team had no core players.  You don't spend heavily on ANY free agents with a void like that.  And no, Jamal Adams is not a "core player".  Even if he was, he didn't want to be here, just like Robby Anderson didn't want to be here.  We've discussed those 2 guys more than enough.

A bunch of 1-year deals was 100 % the right approach.  You can squabble over which players should have gotten those 1-year deals all you want.  The philosophy Douglas opted for was 100 % correct.  Now it all comes down to how well he drafts.  If he drafts well, the approach will work.

Meh, I inherently disagree with punting on entire offseason to add talent.   You are either getting better or your competition is. Everyone hits FA, many get away, this idea that no good players hit FA in bonkers bizarro sh*t that JN made up.   And yes, you have to pay to play with the big boys.  Why this board is so concerned with money is beyond me, we're always in great cap space, never any talent.  What's the point of cap space if you're not going to sign your own players, let alone FA's?  Besides, any GM worth his salt can add top end talent and manage the cap.  Every team "over pays" that's the NFL.

You can spin it anyway you want but when you have no talent, adding 1 player of significance is not good and this idea you cant form a foundation with FA's/Trades is silly.  The Bills basically built an entire team around Josh Allen with Free Agents and Trades, did it over a period of time and while building through the draft at the same time.

Yeah the cap obsession is extremely odd. Can we get some players worth overpaying before we hand wring about overpaying??

Also don’t forget Tampa Bay. Team of total mercenaries.
