WEEK 8 UPDATE:  The Jets are now on pace to be the worst NFL team of all-time.  At the rate they are going, they will be outscored by 288 points, topping the '76 Buccaneers in the process.

Currently, this is the list of post-merger NFL teams with the worst point differential of all-time:

  1. 1976 Buccaneers (0-14):  -287 net points
  2. 1990 Patriots (1-15):  -265
  3. 2009 Rams (1-15):  -261
  4. 2000 Browns (3-13):  -258
  5. 1972 Patriots (3-11):  -254
  6. 2008 Lions (0-16):  -249
  7. 1973 Oilers (1-13):  -248
  8. 1991 Colts (1-15):  -238
  9. 1986 Buccaneers (2-14):  -234
  10. 1990 Browns (3-13):  -234
  11. 2008 Rams (2-14):  -233
  12. 2000 Cardinals (3-13):  -233
  13. 2009 Lions (2-14):  -232
  14. 1987 Falcons (3-12):  -231
  15. 2003 Cardinals (4-12):  -227
  16. 1999 Browns (2-14):  -220
  17. 1972 Oilers (1-13):  -216
  18. 2012 Chiefs (2-14):  -214
  19. 2011 Rams (2-14):  -214
  20. 1976 Jets (3-11):  -214

The 2020 Jets have totaled up -118 net points thru 7 games.  That puts the team on pace for -270 net points, which, if that pace is kept, would place us 2nd on the list of worst teams of all-time, post-merger.

While it's unlikely the Jets will continue to lose at such a historically bad pace, one would have to think the 2020 Jets at least have a good chance to top the 1976 Jets for worst Jets team of all-time, based on point differential.

If you were curious, the next contenders for worst post-merger Jets teams of all-time, based on point differential, were the following:

  • 1996 Jets (1-15):  -175 net points
  • 1975 Jets (3-11):  -175
  • 1989 Jets (4-12):  -158
  • 1995 Jets (3-13):  -151

What would make you think that the Jets are unlikely to lose at such an historically bad pace?

Is there anyway the Johnsons could keep a coach of a bottom 5 team of all time?

I think it’s highly likely that this team makes the bottom 20.  The question is how low does it go?

I think we'll certainly get into the top 20, and end up the worst Jets team of all-time in the process.

But top 3?  Not so confident.  I think this team wins a couple of games, which would offset some of the negative points we've accumulated thus far.

The thing is we need the Jets to keep Gase - till the season is over of course. That guarantees us the best shot at the #1 pick. If we bring in a coach now that knows his ass from an elbow he might want to impress and win a few games. Cant have that! Need to go 0-16 and maybe even the Johnsons are so embarrassed that they have to sell the team!

for draft pick, yes.  We just can’t have him ruin Becton or Darnold-either for playing or trade value.

I would consider IR’ing both of them.  JD can do that.

Pretty incredible to have such a large point differential while starting a season 5-0

I'm about to blow your mind even further:  Despite sweeping the Bills and being a playoff team (when factoring in the 2nd half only), the 2019 Jets were outscored by 83 points!

Yeah but every time the Jets got scored on was a fluke play / outlier

And people called those who were skeptical of playoffs hopes this year "trolls" and "fake fans." Uh, not only not playoff bound but on track for worst team ever. You know, at this point, the homers should basically listen to what the darksiders say as Gospel.

But those people are NEVER wrong about LITERALLY EVERYTHING.

It was pretty obvious to anyone paying attention. Some folks decided to bury their head in the sand and wish upon a star. That generally doesn't work out.

Of course! They'll rest Wilson weeks 16 and 17 and I guarantee you some will come on to say finally we will see what Geno can do with realz weaponz. Of course, he'll poop the bed.

The 2020 Jets have totaled up -66 net points (-16.5 points per game) thru 4 games.  That puts the team on pace for -264 net points, which, if that pace is kept, would place us 3rd on the list of worst teams of all-time, post-merger.

And to just give you an idea of how bad that 76 Bucs team was. The Jets, who are #20 on that list beat the Bucs that year 34-0.

UPDATE:

By "only" losing by 8 points on Sunday, the Jets are now sitting at -118 net points thru 7 games.

That puts the Jets on pace to finish with a point differential of -270.  Still good for the 2nd worst team of all-time, but falling a bit off the pace of being worse than the 1976 Buccaneers (-287) in that category.

We can't evaluate anyone on the team, yet.
