3rd and "Manageable"

Gase’s entire offensive philosophy is to play for easy third downs to increase probabilities of conversion.

The entire rest of the league’s offensive philosophy is to never make it to third down.

Add in the part where he wants a 3rd and 4 so he can have the QB throw it 2-3 yards with no blockers leading the way.

Great post.  This has been a pet peeve of minefor years.  Under Rex, Bowles and Gase.  Goal of our offense has been 3rd and manageable.  Good teams actually try to avoid 3rd down by making big plays on first and second down.  We need 12-15 play drives with 3 or 4 third down conversions to score points.  Hard to do that more than one or two times per game.

We are 3rd in the league in plays run on 3rd down, but 26th in the league in total offensive plays run.  We need an offense that avoids 3rd downs, not one that plays for it.

It's the antheses of everything Gase holds dear. No one has told him that like usually, you get at least 1 of these per drive...you don't have to hold up getting there as a goal. Gase most sacred things in life:

1. Getting to 3rd down at least once per drive

2. That jockstrap he snuck away from Peyton Manning when he wasn't looking

3. Excuses

4. Richard Simmons workout VHS tape (alas, Gase does not own a VHA player, but is actively looking for one)

5. Talking about how he left his wife in delivery room to come up with the good plays

Something to watch for today that is a Gase staple and which makes virtually no sense in today's NFL.

His philosophy is to try to get the offense into manageable 3rd downs, which is why we run more then most teams on 2nd and long.  He basically want to take 2nd and 8 and get it to 3rd and 4, (so we can then run a 3 yard screen) rather then simply try to get the first down by throwing on second and long.  Its also a trend which teams expect which is why we have run the ball so well on first but not so well on second down.

I do think the offense will appear to run more smoothly today with Flacco getting the ball out quickly but wanted to mention this as something to watch today.

Been saying that when he said "we get into 3rd and manageable fine" (or something like that) I knew why the offense suck so much.

He needs to go.

I understand the concerns about protection, guys getting open farther than 8 yards down the field and the QB completing the pass....but he's just way too conservative and predictable with those kinds of play calls in attempting to mitigate those three concerns I mentioned.  Questions...

1. Why not more play action on those 2nd and 7's?  If Gase has become predictable here then a little play action would open up something like a slant or short hook pattern to a TE if LBs are moving towards the LOS to stop the run.

2. How much are the Jets using analytics in determining any of these play calls?  Do they have a bank of data showing them that despite the results the probability of achieving a 1st down is still highest by getting to 3rd and manageable?

Yeah when he can convert a "3rd and manageable" I will get on board with his running on 2nd and anything philosphy. What a ******* jackass.

Like you said you should throw much more on 2nd down especially 2nd and long. Sometimes you run there as a changeup, but I agree most time throwing on 2nd and log is best even if it is a 4-5 yard pass.

Could you please include score and starting field position with each drive?

curious if he reacts to that

also mark the end of the first 20 play script

Txs for doing this

Just to avoid any confusion, Im not planning on officially charting anything.  I just wanted to put this out there so people watch for it because when you are looking for it, its even more mind boggling then reading about it on wednesday after the game.

This philosophy is why Gase is simply a play designer and not play caller.  Anyone can draw up plays (or take plays from Peyton Manning) but its an entirely different skill set to call plays in an actual game, make adjustments to the defense you're playing and in-game and have a feel for the game.
