question for the nfl historians here.

has any team used a top 5 pick on a QB and then within 3 years used another top 5 pick on a qb?

Well Cardinals recently came close wit Murray and Rosen. Browns probably did at one point, but many teams would have done what you are saying but when the drafted top 5 pick QBs if they do not cut the mustard like Leaf, Mirer, Winston, Mariota, Sanchez(who would have gotten more times as starter had Rex not wrecked his shoulder), etc. the teams go a long time with them before giving up and that used to be longer than 5 years regardless of production. Now with the whole 5th year option and such it creates a demarcation point where you have to either commit to the QB or move on, where giving a little more extended contract that is modest may be in order. That is what is the case where 3-4 years is hard to tell how good a QB can be and that is really the case with Darnold. They should try to work something out with the 5th year option and modestly extend him to get the proper HC and skill players needed to better evaluate if he is the long term answer. It is rediculous even in 4 years to get a good judgement on a QB like him that had crap coaching, bad blocking for the most part, and skill position players that are either always hurt or well below par.

Who cares.

The NY Jets need to draft QB's until they find the right one.

They need to build the team up so QB's have a better chance at succeeding when they come here. QB's bust here all the time because they're coming into one of the worst rosters and situations in the league.

Repeatedly taking top QB prospects and expecting them to fix this dumpster fire themselves is the definition of insanity.

Mark Sanchez came into a pretty good situation.

No. It should happen more but if anything I'm surprised it doesn't happen less. Arizona probably wouldn't have gone back to back if Keim had taken an uber. One season of Sanchize got Tannenbaum four more years. Which seems like a lot except as compared to Bradway, who got ten for extending Pennington.

Winning is hard. Closing your eyes and pretending you have a quarterback is easy. Fans are suckers. Sam Darnold is terrible at football.

In the post-merger era its only happened once.

In 1982, the Colts took Art Schlichter # 4 overall.

The next year, the Colts took John Elway # 1 overall.

Obviously, Elway never played a down for the Colts.  But that's not what you asked for.

Many times, teams who end up with a bust high in the draft will opt for the veteran QB option with their next QB (or several QB's) rather than trying to go back to the well in the draft.  Like these:

  • Chiefs:  After taking Todd Blackledge # 7 overall in the '83 draft, they went with veteran options for a very long time:  Steve DeBerg, Dave Krieg, Joe Montana, Steve Bono, Rich Gannon, Elvis Grbac, Trent Green, Matt Cassel and Alex Smith.  It wasn't until Mahomes that they used a high pick on a QB.
  • Browns:  We all know about the long list of QB's the Browns have used over the last 30 years.  Bernie Kosar (1986-1991) was the last QB that had been their primary starter for 3+ straight years up until Mayfield.  They used a # 1 overall pick on Tim Couch and a late 1st on Brady Quinn, but nearly every other QB of significance between Kosar and Mayfield has been veteran pickups.
  • Raiders:  After busting on JaMarcus Russell in the 2007 draft, the Raiders brought in a lot of different QB's over the 2010-13 range, including Jason Campbell and Carson Palmer.  Derek Carr was a 2nd round pick, so Russell was the last high pick used on a QB by the Raiders.
  • Rams:  After busting on Sam Bradford in the 2010 draft, from 2013-16 the Rams tried the likes of Shaun Hill, Austin Davis, Nick Foles and Case Keenum before moving up to take Goff in the '17 draft.
