124
Well yeah today was a pretty cool day as I got a couple of acceptence / denied letters and so I was denied into Syracuse, which sucked...but I was accepted at William Paterson and like anyone else who applies, Sussex County Community College. Instead of going 4 years of a small school what I'm going to do is go a year or 2 of SCCC and then hopefully fine my way into Syracuse or Rutgers...I didn't apply to Rutgers because if I wasn't accepted to Cuse I wasn't going to go to Rutgers but I've thought about it and wouldn't mind going there at all....but it's too late to apply anyways and I think I'm going to like starting out at home for a year or two better. Anyone do the same thing? Anyone think I'm stupid or right?

Anyone do the same thing? Anyone think I'm stupid or right? call rutgers, tell them you wish you had applied. be up front, they may make an exception and at the very least will put you on admissions' radar for when you want to transfer. Sperm Edwards
Just don't slack off right out of the gate. They get so many people dropping out after even just the first semester that there will be plenty of room for you. Admissions is based on two things, quotas & such notwithstanding: (1) how do you compare to other applicants and (2) do they think you'll make it through 4 years there or are they wasting a spot? Post some kick-ass grades in the fall & re-apply. The admissions office will VERY often look at it like, "Well he's finally taking his education seriously." Best of luck. 124
Did you apply anywhere else? Nope, don't really have any intentions of going anywhere else but the colleges above.
JerryK
I think your success is based on your attitude. I did my first 2 yrs at comm college (actually it took 3) then finished at Western Mich Univ. (bscs) If you're serious and mature, you're BETTER off taking the 1st yr at comm college. I'd never want to take calculus in an 800 seat auditorium taught by a non english speaker. ALL my math and general science was in small classes with instructors that gave a damn. but....it's really easy to drop out of community college too, or sell yourself short into an associates or vocational thing. It ultimately depends on you.
faba
I know a number of friend's sons or daughters went to community college not knowing really what they wanted to do. It is what you put into it though- work hard get good grades and then apply to a 4 year school
124
What are some of the things you guys think I could do to make myself a better student? I'm currently like a C / B student in HS and I don't know about college. I'm definitely suffering from Senioritis this year with no school work and just parties and working. Any advice on things I can do to do well in college?
Mavrik
124, take it from a current college junior. From what it sounds like, community college is a sure bet for your right now. Nothing wrong with that at all. My best friend spent 2 years at Valencia community college in Orlando and then transferred to The University of Florida with only a 3.0. A lot of states (Florida included, not sure about Jersey or NY) are required to accept you if you have an AA and at least I believe a 3.0. It's like this in Florida, so again, not sure about Jersey or NY. Go to CC for 2 years and bust your ass and get your grades up. High School is fun and everything and college is a trip, but part of going to college is coming to the realization that you are only a few years away from being in the real world. They are the most important 4 years of your life, because they do a great deal to set up the next 40 years. Bust your ass at CC and if you do well, any University, Rutgers and Syracuse included, is going to accept you in a heartbeat because theyll look at you and say "well he didn't do so hot in high school but he came to CC and got his s*** together" The only thing that'll matter after that is the fact that you'll have a BS or BA from a top University. The other advice i can give you is to start getting involved in groups, organizations, and what not. It looks awesome on college and job resumes when they see that you've been using your time towards groups. CCs I'm sure will have some organizations for you to join. Esp. do this once you reach a university because jobs, and especially when your looking for internships, are going to be looking at what you did in college. What you did in college is just as important as your GPA. Good luck bro, I can sympathize cuz i was down that road only a few years ago. If you need any help or advice or what not, gimme a buzz. sirlancemehlot
Personally, I'd take the William Paterson College route. I did a year there, transferred to Pacific U. in Oregon, then moved on to a school that specialized in my area of study, SUNY Purchase. If you can get your grades up at WPC, an accredited 4-year University, then your chances of moving on to whatever school you want definately increase. As for your current H.S. grades--I wouldn't use them as a measuring stick. I was a lousy H.S. student, but went on to make the Dean's list a dozen times in college. A comunity college is a good start, but it's full of pitfalls. Many CC students don't want to be there or don't take school seriously, seeing it as an extension of H.S. (I did two semesters at Bergen CC). It's better to surround yourself with serious students and a more capable staff--especially since a letter of reccomendation from a teacher with a good rep could go a long way towards getting you transferred to the school you really want most. jetscott
but....it's really easy to drop out of community college too, or sell yourself short into an associates or vocational thing. how is this selling yourself short? who has a better life? someone who owns his or her own skilled tradesman business or a run of the mill 4 year degree working in a cubicle? or selling cars or insurance or what have you? the world is changing and you have to give a lot of thought about what you can do to get ahead today. just getting a 4 year degree doesn't promise you that anymore. if i were a young woman today there would be no doubt about becoming an rn. good jobs everywhere. same for young men. check and see what kind of jobs are going to be needed and then decide. no sense wasting money on college if you're going to end up selling real estate or some other career that really doesn't require a 4 year degree. just a little advice.
