Smizzy
Patriots | Team not likely to franchise Vinatieri Wed, 22 Feb 2006 22:32:58 -0800 Tom E. Curran, of the Providence Journal, reports New England Patriots PK Adam Vinatieri is not likely to have the franchise tag slapped on him by the team. The team is not willing to spend $3.01 million on him for the 2006 season and must hope to re-sign before March 3 to prevent him from hitting the free agent market . PatsFanTX
I said the exact same thing several weeks ago. You just can't pay a friggn' kicker $3+ million. AV will be in a different uniform come September.

Garb
Adam Vinatieri is a commercial hoe in New England - he's on TV pimping Ford trucks, Papa Gino's Pizza, Bernie and Phil's furniture and Dunkin Donuts coffee. you have to wonder if the commercial success/money gets lost on them. Anyway, If he must go: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I AM ENTERNALLY GRATEFUL FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE FOR THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS. Alk
The good news is there are a couple good free agent kickers floating around out there with very similar stats. The only difference is they haven't made two Super Bowl winning kicks which equates to at least a $1 million savings.

To assume that anyone else would have missed the kicks that Vinatieri made in the Super Bowl is just silly. They were big kicks, but nothing special. The only kick that not many other kickers would have made was in the Oakland game. Scott Norwood is an exception, not the rule.
Garb
...Alk, there is a bronze plaque embedded in the parking lot at Gillette - near the pro-shop (supposed to be the very spot that Adam made the kick in the old Foxboro Stadium) - commemorating that famous "snow bowl" (tuck rule game) kick. Kind of cool for Patsie fans.

I mean look at someone like Vanderjagt. Most accurate kicker in league history, I am sure that when he comes down to a big game, game-winning kick, he will nail it right down center. Nothing special. Most kickers make those I don't care how you twist it, I'm going to be pissed if we pay our kicker $3 million for next season. Would you be willing to do that? Nevermind, you guys already wasted a 2nd. rounder on a kicker, I already know your answer.

No one is saying to pay him $3M but at least negotiate and give him what he has earned and keep him on the team, he is after all the MOST CLUTCH KICKER OF ALL TIME (right TX? ) You guys (panzies that is) are ridiculous, you think nothing can keep you from being champs as long as BB is still there. Lose your OC, DC, DC#2/BB mentee, get rid of the best kicker to probably ever play the game . . . the list goes on and on, but don't worry you still have BB. Talk about a delusional fan base! How's that Lombardi trophy you won this year w/o Weiss and Crennel? Thought so.

Great points Husker. The two Super Bowl kicks were nothing special. That's what kickers are paid to do. The kick against the Raiders in a driving blizzard has to be the greatest (and most clutch) kick in NFL history.

Thought so. $3 million IS what it would cost to franchise him which is what we had to do last year due to the fact that we couldn't reach an agreement with him. Our SB hopes don't hinge on a kicker. They hinge on putting a decent secondary together, finding a starting ILB and keeping our offense together which would mean re-signing Givens. Vinatieri's best chance at getting a ridiculous deal has passed. His last Super Bowl winning kick was 3 years ago and he was pretty ordinary this season. If we can sign him to a reasonable contract I'm all for it but anything over $2 million and he can get bent. And yes, this team lives and dies with Belichick. There is no way the Pats should tag him and pay him $3.3 million next year. Paying a kicker $3.3 mil would be the equivalent of drafting one in the 2nd round. Only stupid teams do things like that. raffyD
Other than AV who is the highest paid kicker in the league, w/o a franchise tag? Whatever it is AV should be signed for more than that, period.

By the way, as it stands, it could be argued that he is actually a better kicker than Vinatieri at this point.
raffyD
How so? I guess the coach isn't that important, I almost forgot how dominating you guys were with Herm running the circus. The coach is VERY important, I never meant to imply otherwise and yes we do have experience with a pos coach and what that brings. I was just saying that you guys are becoming the one thing you say you hate about jets fans and that is being delusional. Which you are if you don't think you need to keep key players on the team. Go talk to Tuna about how unimportant a kicker is. Oh yeah, give Dungy a call while you're at it. And TX, those kicks "may be what they get paid to do" but they aren't always successful, AV was ALWAYS successful on those kicks and that is worth a lot in my book (not $3M but should be highest paid in the league). It's ok you guys disagree, just don't come crying to us when you get knocked out/miss the playoffs because it sailed left or hit the cross bar. AV plays in the brutal northeast and drills those mothers through the uprights regularly and in clutch situations. I think he should get more than Rackers but 3.3 is ridiculous. I do think you need to keep your important players around. Your idea of important and mine are evindentally very different. My idea of important is Seymour, Brady, Branch and Givens, Vinatieri is pretty far down on that list especially if we have to break the bank for him and spend money that could be used to keep one of the players I mentioned. I agree, he should get more than Rackers but if anyone wanted to argue the other way, they would at least have a leg to stand on. Rackers hit 95% of his kicks last season. 3.3 isn't even ridiculous, I don't think there's even a word for what that is. Maybe Bartoniculous? 124
Vinatieri would be a key loss to the Patriots. There clutch kicker would is going bye-bye and now we'll see what happens in a clutch spot with some scrub kicker (maybe they'll even sign Vanderjagt!) You mean like how Bradway did last year with Mike Nugent? Gee, that worked out! We could have sat, done nothing, and picked Heath Miller in the 1st round and waited until the 3rd or 4th round to take Nugent.
