Former WR Roddy White to Lawrence: “Stay at Clemson if the Jets get the first pick

Recommended Posts

Roddy White, the former five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver with the Falcons, has an in at Clemson. Tigers' offensive coordinator Tony Elliott is White's cousin. So what advice would White pass on to Elliott to pass on to Trevor Lawrence if the Jets have the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft?

Stay in school.

White, who recently partnered with Topgolf to promote their new Angry Birds game, spoke with The Big Lead on a variety of topics, including whether the Falcons should tank for Trevor Lawrence. After saying he thought it was a pointless endeavor because Atlanta already has one win and the Jets will go 0-16 in his eyes, White then said he would tell Lawrence to avoid the Jets at all costs. Here's the full answer.

Have to say, you can't argue with White's reasoning. The Jets have failed to develop the careers of many highly-drafted quarterbacks, most notably and recently Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith and Christian Hackenberg. Sam Darnold, the No. 3 pick in the 2018 draft, has regressed in the last two seasons with the Jets, though that has a lot to do with Adam Gase's failures as a coach. He could still turn out to be a great NFL QB, though it seems it won't be with the Jets.

Lawrence has been hailed as the next can't-miss quarterback, à la Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, since high school. A prototypical pocket passer with the size (6-6, 220 pounds), passing accuracy, mobility and mind every team covets, he's the top Heisman contender this year and already led Clemson to a national championship as a true freshman. He is the consensus No. 1 prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft and has already said this is his last season in college, which makes sense because he will almost assuredly be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 draft.

Unless he comes back to college, which White would advocate if the Jets have the No. 1 pick. That certainly seems likely given how inept their offense has been this year (32nd in the NFL in virtually every important offensive category) and how little star power the Jets have on either side of the ball. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement for Lawrence to want to join the Jets, but with a new coach and new players being brought in, things could change a lot moving forward.

Here’s my two cents, if you’re the #1 overall pick & an extremely rare cant miss QB prospect.. you’re going to the worst team in the NFL.

Yeah, but you have wort and you have the QB young human meat grinder Jets. "Run Trevor, Run."

Here are the details of an Atlanta Falcons legend's arrest in Gwinnett County

According to the incident report, Roddy White had initially been cited for driving on a suspend/revoked license and committing an HOV violation.

Any team picking 1st overall sucks regardless of what year it is. That's the burden of being the best player in CFB

Probably not but hard to argue for going to the Jets.

They pay the same money as every other team with the first pick in the draft. If you don't like it there, you can leave after 5 years, or, become very, very wealthy.

Stay in college, you risk getting hurt, you lose one year of earning in your career, but you do keep getting college tail.

I love players that spend other players money.

I know this is very naive but I don't want a QB who doesn't believe he can succeed anywhere.

That's probably why he went to Clemson.

isn't he assuming that sanchez, geno, and hack could be developed?  neither geno nor hack played enough with the jets that they should've learned any bad habits from the coaches.  geno's offensive coach is now with the doltfins.  maybe sanchez could've been salvaged the other no way.

Although I am a long suffering Jets fan, the names brought up are irrelevant to the fact that there were different coaching staffs (personnel) in many of the cases mentioned above.   Just say the Jets are snake bitten, as a better  than apples and oranges reasons.

Roddy White is a bum.

You are really struggling with the idea that Lawrence will refuse to play for the Jets, huh?

Can't recognize the possibility he goes to the Jets and struggles... or goes somewhere else and becomes worth more than half a billion like Mahomes?

Is Roddy White going to pay him 25 million to make up for that year?

it may get him a contract extension far worth that one day then come to this dumpster fire and be done by year 3

Kind of a Catch-22 then. If the Jets can’t draft good offensive talent, and we picked Trevor Lawrence with the #1 overall, that would mean he isn’t good.

Or, it may not. If he gets injured his senior year, legitimately, he could stand to lose $300m in playing earnings alone.

Yeah but its like choosing to work at a slaughterhouse or being slaughterer at a slaughterhouse. Even if the pay is identical the latter job description is a much harder sell.

I think we ruined Sam Darnold but guys like Geno Smith, Christian Hackenberg & Sanchez all were doomed from the start. We did what we could with Sanchez. He never caught on, solid players left, offense went stale. Hackenberg wasnt an NFL QB from the start & Geno started one game for another team (Giants) and they pulled him after one game. I don’t think the Jets have necessarily been a QB meat grinder if history has anything to do with it, I think they just don’t pick QB’s worth a damn and they haven’t hired the right people to even sort of develop anyone. Maccagnan & Idzik couldn’t draft anyone offensively impactful. A lot of the guys who are at fault for ruining Sam or constructing the roster are gone.

Fair. "Run Trevor Run!"

He doesn't have much of a choice. NFL union is not as strong as mlb union.

Struggling? The one I see struggling is you accepting the fact that he will be taken #1 by the NY Jets.

Donate the Sam Darnold jersey to Goodwill un dye your red hair and move on.

There’s more of a chance of Trevor pulling an Eli and demanding the Jets trade the pick then him going back to school for another year.  This is a total non-story to me and Paul Finebaum said the same thing last week during a radio interview when he said Trevor has zero left to accomplish in college, is bored and would have declared last year if he could.  And what exactly are the realistic better options?  Jacksonville (who has never developed a QB and is about to tear down its entire organization)?  Atlanta (salary cap hell and currently is without a HC or GM)?
