The story behind maskless Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley photo sparking controversy

October 24, 2020 | 2:33pm | Updated

The Giants said they are looking into images that surfaced Friday showing Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones at a bar without masks, which led to speculation that the running back and quarterback had violated the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol.

The Post learned that the pair of star 23-year-olds and other Giants players had dinner Friday night in a private room at a restaurant in Manhattan.

After dinner, the group was invited to a bar that is closed to the public, according to a source familiar with the situation. This is where the video and a photo were taken and later uploaded to Instagram by DJ Lugghead, who was serving as a driver for the players.

Lugghead initially told The Post that the picture of a maskless Jones and Barkley, which he deleted after they made the rounds on social media Saturday, were from October 2019 and not from Friday night.

“It was all posts from last year,” the DJ said in a phone interview Saturday. “It’s a memory that popped up from a year ago. That’s why I posted it.”

The DJ declined to comment further when contacted again and told of The Post’s reporting.

The picture was captioned, “Rockin wit Danny dimes and Saquon.”

The DJ also posted a video of Jones taking a sip of a drink handed to him by an unidentified woman and another that appeared to show a man resembling Barkley riding a bike in the street.

Barkley is set to undergo surgery next week after tearing his ACL on Sept. 20.

Lugghead also DJs at Common Ground in the Meatpacking District, though the images were not taken at that location, as some had initially believed.

The Giants said they were looking into the matter and the NFL did not immediately return a request for comment. Under the league’s COVID-19 protocols, players can be fined for conduct detrimental if they are found to have engaged in “reckless” behavior, according to ESPN, including patronizing an indoor bar with more than 10 people (other than to pick up a to-go order) without wearing a mask, per USA Today.

The Giants had this weekend off after playing on Thursday night in Philadelphia, where they blew an 11-point lead in the final 6:17 to lose to the Eagles, 22-21.

lol   If Barkley was riding a bicycle down a street in Manhattan while awaiting surgery then this is worse than not wearing a mask while hanging out with friends.  Very dubious that any of this happened Friday night.

Did anyone actually get sick?

Yes, COVID could cause a potentially deadly heath crisis for elderly people and people with a comorbidity. For young healthy athletes so far 1. few have caught it 2. among the rare few who did test positive, none of gotten sick .

Barkley and Jones their teammates are probably around each other almost every day. Again; did either they or anyone else in attendance actually test positive or get sick? This is hysteria.

It's Florio. He's a Karen. Barkley riding a bike drunk I guess is bad when he's hurt. If they are going out for a drinks or dinner why would they be in masks?

It's not about them getting sick  It's about spreading the virus to vulnerable people - I dont know why its so hard for people to understand this concept.

The only way to get through this pandemic is to slow the spread of the virus until a vaccine is available.

Are we not getting through? Everyone is back to work, places are open, and things are back to normal. Live life and stop fear mongering and for the love of god stop giving Florio any sort of credibility.

Fair enough. Are they supposed to eat and drink with their faces covered? Is there any data that anyone was infected? Again, these are young healthy athletes who are around each other every day anyway.

Happened to drive past the local early voting site here in NYC this morning; huge, not socially distanced crowds, many old people. Which situation is fraught with more potential for infection?

Adam Gase deserves every bit of the media's obsession.

Why because we/he sucks?

What about the others who suck?  Minny, Atlanta etc, are they clown shows too?

Going out, blowing off protocols, is stupid and should be brought up.

Well, wait until all hospitals are filled with Covid patients and we'll see how people are reacting then.  Because that's where this is headed.

Yeah no. This new spike-the symptoms are much less severe and we obviously have a better idea on how to treat it. The hospital overflow has been a bizarre fear monger for a while now. It’s not happening and saying it’s happening is strange.

The NFL is trying to isolate the players from the public, not each other.

this is not hysteria, it’s business

bad ratings makes the ad buyers unhappy

unhappy ad buyers threatens the league’s future negotiatons
