Harbaugh's contract

Basically he's owed what amount to $10 million for 2021; that's it. He was negotiating an extension last spring but it was never finalized by either party. Would Michigan be willing to waive that? Would Harbaugh walk away from $10 million (and he won't for anything near as cheaply as any coach the Johnsons have hired. And would the Cheap F___ Johnsons be willing to pay that? And at this point  Michigan might be happy to see him gone. What ever happens, this could be doable. But it's money, and the Johnsons ALWAYS hire  a coordinator on the cheap.

Jim Harbaugh’s Contract, Buyout Situation After Embarrassing Loss To Michigan State

After yet another rivalry game loss for Michigan, this time to a Michigan State team that lost to Rutgers last week, Wolverines fans are starting to lose their patience with h

Harbaugh, who signed a seven-year deal back in 2014, is contracted for the rest of the 2020 season and the entire 2021 campaign. He was reportedly negotiating an extension this past spring before COVID hit, but it never came to fruition. Michigan’s brass may have wound up saving the school a lot of money with that decision.

If Michigan decides it instead wants to move on from Harbaugh, it has two options. It can either wait until after the 2021 season, or it can figure out a way to buy him out beforehand.

Harbaugh’s compensation package totals just over $8 million in 2020, but it isn’t all salary – he has a life-insurance policy as part of the deal.

It’s unclear exactly what Harbaugh will be due in 2021 given the complexities of the contract, but most estimates suggest it’s around $10 million. So if the Wolverines stick it out for the 2020 campaign (likely given the shortened season due to COVID) they’ll be looking at a buyout around that number.

It’s a high number, but it isn’t out of the range for Michigan. It’s amazing how fast things have gone downhill in Ann Arbor.

Update; conflicting data but either he gets $10 million in salary for 2021 or an equal buyout

"When Michigan fired Rich Rodriguez in January 2011 after three disastrous seasons as head coach, they owed him a $2.5-million buyout. Five years later, when Michigan fired Brady Hoke after four (mostly) disastrous seasons as head coach, they owed him a $3-million buyout. If the Wolverines fire Jim Harbaugh before his current contract expires, they'd owe him a hell of a lot more than $2.5 or $3 million.

Harbaugh signed a seven-year contract when he returned to his alma mater in late 2014. The initial contract called for $500,000 in base salary for each of the seven years along with $4.5 million in additional compensation per year. He also received a $2-millon signing bonus (due within 14 days of signing).

While Harbaugh hasn't signed an extension, he did get a $2-million-per-year raise in 2016, though the raise came in the form of insurance payments and is not included in his base salary or additional compensation.

He is also eligible for several bonuses, among them:

Big Ten Coach of the Year: $50,000
National Coach of the Year: $75,000
Big Ten Championship appearance: $125,000
Big Ten Championship: $250,000
Playoff appearance: $300,000
National championship: $500,000

If Michigan fires Jim Harbaugh without cause before the end of his seven-year contract, he is owed the annual base salary and additional compensation "for the remainder of the term." His contract runs from Jan. 11 through Jan. 10 of the following year. Therefore, for example (and simplicity's sake), if Harbaugh is fired on Jan. 10, 2020, after his fifth season as head coach, he is owed a buyout of $10 million.

After 2020: $10 million
After 2021: $5 million"

I'm confused, why would Michigan want to "buy out" a coach that is such a hot commodity on this board?

To get rid of him for next year, and pay less than the $10 million he would be owed to make him gone.

The only thing that worries me is the Jets do have competition for Harbaugh's services. So far right now the Houston Texans are looking for a new head coach and Detroit are going to be looking for a new coach.

The only thing that worries me is that the owners the Johnsons hardly do pursue head coaches. I would sit and watch and hope they do try everything to get him to coach in NY.

Yup. Bieniemy has been passed over more than a brown banana in the supermarket. He’s desperate for his shot and not in a position to negotiate. A Johnsholes fever dream.

Those other teams getting a jump. As far as I understand, there's no restriction talking to college coaches mid-season. Don't think you can do that with NFL coaches. Could be wrong.
