Leonard Williams is having a Pro Bowl year

This year. In 9 games he has 5 sacks, 7 TFL’s and 11 QB hurries. Q has 3 sacks, 7 TFL’s and 5 QB hurries. So much for the curse of the Jets following a player

Contract year.  Once the Giants pay him with lots of guaranteed $$$$, he will go back to his usual JAG routine.

Ok. And?

Leonard is 26 years old as a 6th year player.

QW is only 22 years of age and only a 2nd year kid.

Why compare Leo to "QW"? Why not compare Leo to Aaron Donald and/or other pro bowl veterans lol?

Should've kept him and drafted offense. Not that I think he's awesome or anything, but the delta between Q and Leo not that huge. Oh right but cheapo Jets wanted to save money to go right to Woody's bottom line.

Na. We can (now) simply throw big money at an offensive FA WR (for Trevor) such as an Allen Robinson or JuJu; instead of having to pay Leo a monster contract... Problem solved.

FA WR gonna cost as much as 2 Leos.

Do Jet fans ever learn? Leo is playing in a contract year, he's literally busting his azz for his next contract, that is a thing in today's NFL unfortunately.

No one here said Leo is a bad player, what we always said is that he might be slightly above average & that should never correlate to a contract slightly under the BEST DTs in the NFL.

Overpaying for mediocre is why the Jets SUCK! They paid in the past because they were such terrible at the draft guys that might be slightly above average stand out as our best players, but they aren't even close to the best this league has to offer each week on other teams. It's like Hunter Henry wanting Kelce money. A GM that recognizes the difference like JD will help us rebuild correctly going forward.

He’s like John Abraham without the sacks, qb pressures tackles and game changing plays

Yeah, way to set a low bar... Hey Mr giggles, has LW missed any games? Q has, and he's only in his second year. Meanwhile, have you seen the teams in the nfe east? LW reminds me of MW (career wise), and how did that work out?

But He’s not JAG....

Nobody said he was a JAG. But when he says he wants to get 20M per year, there is no universe, parallel or otherwise, where he get that kind of commitment from the Jets. If another team wants to pay him that, good luck, I have a sneaking suspicion it will backfire.  The Jets did the right thing.

And they'll be worth more than 2x the worth of Leo (for TL).

My point is best option was to re-sign Leo, and draft a WR instead of Q (that year, could've traded down, got more picks and gotten the WR). Of course, there is a bust risk and it is an opinion with the benefit of hindsight.

And FYI I would be wary of JuJu -- or any Steelers WR -- that system seems plug-and-play for WR1s. They never seem to be the same guy after leaving.

A few other posters have made this point but Leonard this year is just a motivated contract year version of the player he's always been -- good run stuffing DT, pretty talented, but non impact player.

Because of his name and top 6 pick status he's going to command a salary much greater than his actual worth.

He's not a bad player, he made one Pro Bowl here too. He's just not worth what he's going to get paid and wasn't worth his draft status.

So the giaints give him a big contract, probably with some good guarantees. In the meantime they’re just about in the same place the jets are personnel wise so they’ll have a ton of money tied up.  And to top it off, Danny dimes might not be the guy.

Good luck to Leo for having a good year.  It’s not like he was a bad player just one that cost too much at the wrong time.

He is making $16M.  That APY puts him above Robinson, Diggs, Landry and Davante Adams.   The Jets could have had Anderson and Perriman for what Williams is making this season and he refused the Giants efforts to extend him.  Keeping him would have been insane.

Ah, thanks. Although a FA WR 1 will likely jump to highest (or at least top 3) paid WRs.

So instead of having a WR on a rookie deal, we have Q.

I guess then the best option would have been to not resign Leo -- draft a WR in round one -- and find a run-stuffing DL later in the draft.

this dude is a troll but the point that Leonard Williams is a good player and the Jets don't keep their good players is a sound one

imagine a defense with Leo and Q, or Leo, Q and Sheldon

they chose cap space instead

the Jets have 45 mil in dead spend this year

I like Ashtyn Davis more than most but the Jets would be better with Williams, Anderson, Demario Davis, Andre Roberts and all the other legit players they decided to let go/trade instead of paying the Mercinaries like Trumaine, Mosely, Bell etc.

Jets fans have a preternatural hatred for our own draft picks, particularly paying them money

all the casual fans who want to win games have left and the remaining fanbase are all cap accountants and tank commanders

It is an interesting phenomenon that us fans of a team that has measured out as one of the worst-drafting teams of the decade, continue to place all our faith in the draft.

The draft is literally the only place to go to have any sustainable success in the NFL.  What alternative choice do we have?

Yeah but when we hit on a pick in the draft, why does it always seem we dump him for peanuts when it's time to lock him down -- or at the least, why do we always choose the wrong bum to lock down?

At least JD got impressive value for Adams -- I hope things are changing in more ways than one...

We don't actually hit on the picks, that's why.  The only 1st round picks this team actually hit on in the last 2 decades are Shaun Ellis, John Abraham, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold and Darrelle Revis.  And all of those guys got extended past their rookie deals.

In addition, Muhammad Wilkerson and Mark Sanchez were NOT hits, yet the Jets extended them beyond their rookie deals.

Wilkerson, Sanchez, and the rest of our 1st rounders (except Becton) can all kick rocks for all I care.  They all deserved to get traded away (whether they were or not), and it would have been horrible decisions to extend any of them (whether they were or not).
