Popular Post jetstream23
I like it but we're missing someone likely only because his time here was so brief. The three years that the Jets had Tony Richardson at FB were some of the greatest rushing years in NYJ history. He was one of the most under appreciated Jets from that era. The Jets had an excellent OLine led by Brick and Mangold but fairly average rental RBs in Thomas Jones and a still good but older and discarded LaDainian Tomlinson. Tony Richardson lit it up and was one of the biggest reasons that ground and pound succeeded here. When he left in 2011, well....I don't have to tell you what followed despite several more years of Mangold, Brick, etc. 10 1

glenn31
Lorenzo Neal in 1997 did nothing to dispute the argument that he belongs in the HOF. He was as big a part of our resurgence under The Great Bill Parcells as anyone, and his blocking that season for Murrel was a great indicator that the old days of the Jets being a soft, non-threatening, automatic win on your schedule was over. I also loved Brad Baxter. Good lead blocker, lead the team in rushing a few times, and just a fantastic football player all around. The best back he ever blocked for was the not-so-special Johnny Johnson and helped JJ to some good seasons. It wasn't his fault most of his backfield mates were either old and worn down (McNeil & Hector) or either stiffs / average at best (Thomas & Johnson). Pair him with a younger, fresher Adrian Murrel & I bet we view Baxter in a more favorable light amongst all-time Jets.

Gaines was the best all around fullback in the history of the Jets. He could run, receive and block. In1979 season he lead the Jets in rushing AND receiving for the SECOND time. He only fumbled once that season. The next season he set the franchise record with 17 catches in a game against the 49ers. I was at the game in week 5 in 1980 when he broke his leg against the Pats and his career, for all intents and purposes, ended.

munchmemory
Riggins' talent was not be properly understood or used in his era. Yet he was still a phenomenal player (cried when we let him go to the Redskins). Now? Would be even more of a monster and lock for the HOF. So, in order: Riggins, Brad Baxter and Matt Snell.

Popular Post #27TheDominator
No love for Kevin Long? Guy had a hell of a season in '76. Almost 1,000 yards rushing at 4.5 ypc and 10 TDs. I don't think he belongs in the top three, but I think he deserves a mention along with Baxter, Gaines and Augustyniak.

Wow, very jealous you and your Dad were there. What a fantastic memory. What a treat watching Riggins power though on runs. Anyone ever questioning the history of dumb Jet moves should only look at the fact that we let a guy with Riggins' talent walk out the door. Still bothers me. rangerous
It’s hard to argue with Snell and the riggins for one and two. Riggins just wasn’t with the jets long enough before he was traded over a contract dispute. Snell just had that power and speed. Both of these guys are from a different era. As for the no. 3 guy, Clark Gaines is a really good choice as it Richie Anderson.

The stub is still in the desk drawer in my parents house. No tunnel for us. I wouldn't let my Dad move. He used me as an excuse because he didn't want to leave either. I remember standing on the seat and then everybody blocking my view. What was Namath? 5 completions for 228 yards? Bonus, the car we drove home in is still in the garage. Okay, now it's in a garage, it used to just be parked on the streets of Bensonhurst.
mrcoops
I wasn't around for Snell or Riggo, but I always loved this guy's effort and game: He had a nice career for an UDFA. Jet Nut
Snell or Riggins. Theyre close production wise, Riggins had 1,000 yards when it meant something in a 14 game season. Snell has that ring and its hard to beat
