Lorenzo Neal in 1997 did nothing to dispute the argument that he belongs in the HOF. He was as big a part of our resurgence under The Great Bill Parcells as anyone, and his blocking that season for Murrel was a great indicator that the old days of the Jets being a soft, non-threatening, automatic win on your schedule was over.

I also loved Brad Baxter. Good lead blocker, lead the team in rushing a few times, and just a fantastic football player all around. The best back he ever blocked for was the not-so-special Johnny Johnson and helped JJ to some good seasons. It wasn't his fault most of his backfield mates were either old and worn down (McNeil & Hector) or either stiffs / average at best (Thomas & Johnson). Pair him with a younger, fresher Adrian Murrel & I bet we view Baxter in a more favorable light amongst all-time Jets.

Exactly what I was thinking. Gaines was the best all around fullback in the history of the Jets. He could run, receive and block. In1979 season he lead the Jets in rushing AND receiving for the SECOND time. He only fumbled once that season.  The next season he set the franchise record with 17 catches in a game against the 49ers.

I was at the game in week 5 in 1980 when he broke his leg against the Pats and his career, for all intents and purposes, ended.

Riggins' talent was not be properly understood and used in his era.  Yet he was still a phenomenal player (cried when we let him go to the Redskins).  Now?  Would be even more of a monster and lock for the HOF.
So, in order:  Riggins, Brad Baxter and Matt Snell.
Riggo circa 1972 , from the other great Jets/Colts game of that year.
(wherein me and my pop had to run back out a tunnel to catch the end of eddie bell's TD.)

Thanks for the video.  Wow, very jealous you and your Dad were there. What a fantastic memory.

What a treat watching Riggins power though on runs.  Anyone ever questioning the history of dumb Jet moves should only look at the fact that we let a guy with Riggins' talent walk out the door.   Still bothers me.

Thanks again, jago.

It’s hard to argue with Snell and the riggins for one and two.  Riggins just wasn’t with the jets long enough before he was traded over a contract dispute. Snell just had that power and speed. Both of these guys are from a different era.

As for the no. 3 guy, Clark Gaines is a really good choice as it Richie Anderson.

Awesome!  I was there too!  My first game!  The stub is still in the desk drawer in my parents house. No tunnel for us.  I wouldn't let my Dad move.  He used me as an excuse because he didn't want to leave either.  I remember standing on the seat and then everybody blocking my view.  What was Namath?  5 completions for 228 yards?

Bonus, the car we drove home in is still in the garage.   Okay, now it's in a garage, it used to just be parked on the streets of Bensonhurst.

It's a shame neither want anything to do with the organization! Snell feels he was screwed and Riggins identifies more with the Redskins (where he had a great deal of success). That one hurts.

My list is Riggins, Snell and Anderson.  Guys like Richardson and Neal were excellent in their role, but you woiudn't trade Riggins for four of them.  I'd probably take Baxter, Keith Byars and Sowell over either.

I put Snell as my #1, since you could very strongly argue he was the MVP of Super Bowl 3.

Ha!  I think I initially had Snell #1.  I don't really remember him much.  Guy was a beast.  My father always talks about him crushing people with chip blocks being what allowed the Jets to win.  On the Ohio State All-Century team at DE.  Think about that.  FB was important back then.  Now he'd probably be a standup DE/3-4 OLB and making a ton of coin.

I never saw him play, I'm old but not that old.

Watch the highlights of SB3, he was the main cog of the game.
