Ramsey still on Jets' radar

May take over for Pennington

BY RALPH VACCHIANO / DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Jets might add Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey should Chad Pennington refuse to take a pay cut.

INDIANAPOLIS - Chad Pennington is the quarterback of the Jets for now, but the team already may have its eyes on his replacement. The Washington Redskins are shopping quarterback Patrick Ramsey, coach Joe Gibbs admitted yesterday, and the Jets apparently are one of the teams that already have called. That's hardly surprising since they also inquired about the 27-year-old backup during the season right after Pennington hurt his shoulder. At the time, the Redskins' price was too high. But their demands are almost certainly lower now that they're frantically trying to shed about $20 million to get under the projected salary cap by Thursday afternoon. They don't necessarily have to trade Ramsey to get there, but that's apparently part of their plans. In fact, they've given Ramsey's agent, Jimmy Sexton, permission to seek a deal, too.

"It's something we're trying to gain information about and letting them talk and visit and seeing what situations may be out there," Gibbs said. "And we're doing the same thing. We'll see if there's a fit. It has to make sense for us and make sense for both sides."

Ramsey, who made just one start and threw only 25passes last season, is scheduled to make $1.7 million in 2006, the final year of his contract, which is about $7 million less than Pennington is scheduled to make.Of course, the Jets still are negotiating with Pennington, who rejected their initial offer to slash his pay by $8 million. His agent, Tom Condon, and Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum were expected to meet here at the scouting combine yesterday to see if they could reach an agreement before Friday, when Pennington's $3 million roster bonus is due.

If they can't, Pennington could be released, which would definitely put the Jets in the market for a veteran quarterback. They're also believed to be eyeing Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler with the fourth pick in the draft.

If Pennington is released, then Cutler is a lock at number 4 with or without Ramsey.

Cutler at #4 would be the equivalent of giving up two 1st's and a 4th for DFat.

Mangini is much smarter then that.

Many draft experts have Cutler as their #1 rated qb on their board, not only that but i've seen MANY draft boards from so called experts that have this order:

Bush

DBrick

Cutler

So, I for one would not disagree with taking Cutler at #4. Not only that but Cutler's stock is rising even higher with his participation in combine drills that he doesent even have to participate in. I think he benched 225 around 23 times yesterday which might be one of the best ever for a qb at the combine.

I'm not saying that Cutler will not turn out to be a fine NFL QB.

I like what I see of him and the 23 reps yesterday were impressive as hell.

As with any QB entering the NFL, there is a risk involved.

I'm just saying that D'Brick at #4 minimizes that risk.

Dbrick would be great if Tennesse doesnt take him, however he is under 300lbs and for an offensive lineman I dont know if he wont get pushed around from some of those NFL power rushers. Yes, has very quick feet and can get out there for the speed rushers, but like I said, his being under 300 lbs does concern me a bit at the next level.

I do have this feeling that Tenn might take Dbrick and then the lock would be Cutler. Pennington is not playing this season and we all know it. Fiedler is done and I dont want some hand me down scrub that didnt work out for another NFL squad. My opinion is to push all your chips in and take Cutler!!

vinny,

D'Brick weighed in at 312 lbs at the combine.

During an interview he said he wants to get up to 325 lbs before training camp starts.

By week 2 he'll have lost that weight and be down to 290 lbs which is what he almost always played at in college.

Exactly my point. He weighed in at 312 at the combine cause he's not active right now. During college he was always under 300. He put on 15 lbs, but will most definatly loose that during an NFL season in water weight alone.

You don't think he's been training all this time? He put on the extra weight because some thought he was underweight. You don't think he did that on purpose? Thats crazy. This is a smart guy we're talking about, not a slob.
