PFW: Eyebrows Raised at Young Jets Coaching Staff

I think this is a bad move by Mangini as you need a balanced staff to instill confidence in your team.

"We hear that there were quite a few eyebrows raised throughout the league at the very young coaching staff assembled by the Jets. Six of the new coaches are 34 years old or younger, and four of those coaches are ex-players who have no NFL coaching experience. Plus, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, 32, has never been more than a position coach. Though head coach Eric Mangini has only one year of experience as an offensive coach, word is he wants to have more input in the offense and was looking for a young coach with whom he would be able to build the Jets’ new offense and grow together in their roles. There are concerns among Jets observers regarding the team’s lack of veteran leadership both on the coaching staff and in the locker room."

It is true that the overall stafff is young, and relatively inexperienced. But Sutton is the DC, and Westoff the Specials Coordinator. They have tons of football experiense. And the offense was horrid with all the veteran brains of Hermindinger and Hackett, so how much worse can it be.

Give me youth, and energy. They may make mistakes, but they will keep on plugging away and get it done.

This would be valid except they have Jimmy Raye on offense. They are going to lean on him.

Jimmy Raye? What has this guy ever done? Vermin hired him to shorten play names etc, to get the plays in to the QB quicker a few years ago. The problem was never solved. Didn't see Raye do much while with Oakland either.

Bill Walsh, who is a visionary, said not too long ago the jets staff had the potential to be very good. These guys are young but are football lifers and have worked with some of the best in the business.

Didn't Bill Walsh also say that Rick Mirer was the real deal?

He is a position coach here. He doesn't have as much to do. But when our 32 year old O\C is about to have a nervous breakdown, he can step in and talk him off the ledge.

Big thing-

Westoff is as old as dirt.

Sutton was a winning HC with Army, so much so they beat Syracuse and went to a bowl game during his tenure, which is unheard of. He is as universally respected a coach as there is within the fraternity. It's a mystery to me why this guy never moved up off that. May be family considerations?
