This is the best news I have heard so far about the beginning of the search. It sounds like Douglas will have full control of the football operations.

Johnson said they are considering a change in the organizational structure of whether to have the HC report to the GM rather than have them equals. #nyj

You see, the Johnson's know nothing about football, whereas a GM might know something about football.

You are always going to have someone reporting to the Johnson’s, why does the HC reporting to the Johnson’s matter? Do you think the Johnson’s are telling the coach how to to his job?

Do you want the Johnson's picking the coach, or someone who is a football guy picking the coach?

Most NFL teams have the same reporting structure as the Jets, with the HC NOT reporting to the GM. The reporting structure is not the reason the team stinks. It's because we have had lousy GMs and His for 10+ years now.  Horrible drafting, bad FA signings, and poor coaching all the way around.

Having the HC report to the GM won't fix anything if JD doesn't build a competitive team with good drafting and free agency moves and if the new coaching staff is not good.  They could both report to me and if JD builds a team and the coaching is good, the team will win. They could also report to me and JD could miss on personnel decisions and the coaches continue to stink and the losing will continue.  Neither scenario has anything to do with the reporting relationship.

That said, having the GM and HC on the same page is essential.
