The Jets’ disastrous 2020 season is over. Now come some important decisions.

While finding a new head coach is New York’s first priority this offseason, there’s also the matter of free agency. That’s still several weeks away, but the Jets have 25 players slated to become free agents.

While the majority wouldn’t be missed if they were to sign elsewhere, Joe Douglas is going to want to retain some of those players. While he gets to work on that, here’s a list of every Jet who could hit the open market in March.

No, I think you move on from Maulet. I think if you are able to bring back Poole then you go ahead with Bless, Hall, Poole, Guidry and Jackson along with a rookie drafted with one of our 5 picks in the first 3 rounds. I dunno, someone like Mukuamu or Rodarius Williams maybe? Depends who is there and when we decide to pick. If its Rd. 2 maybe we can get Eric Stokes or Asante Samuel.

Many decisions lie ahead for Joe Douglas.

Besides hiring a new head coach, the Jets have to focus on retaining their own players, some of them before free agency begins in March. The Jets have 25 players slated to hit the open market. Among them are starters, depth pieces and veterans. After going 2-14, the Jets are certainly going to experience more roster turnover. However, there’s a handful of free agents Douglas should want to bring back for 2021 and beyond.

1 -S Marcus Maye

Marcus Maye hinted about wanting to return while acknowledging that the decision isn’t entirely his to make. Douglas, speaking with reporters on Tuesday, said that re-signing Maye was a “priority” for New York this offseason. With the Jets in need of a leader on defense following the losses of multiple veterans, Maye rose to the occasion in 2020. The fourth-year safety had arguably the best season of his career while becoming the voice of a young defense. Playing in all but three defensive snaps this season, Maye recorded 88 total tackles, two interceptions, 11 passes defended and two sacks in 16 games.Douglas could do a lot worse than making Maye the face of the Jets defense going forward.

2 - LB Neville Hewitt

For the second consecutive season, Neville Hewitt stepped up to the plate when called upon. Injuries mounted again at inside linebacker and Hewitt quickly emerged as New York’s stopgap in the middle Hewitt finished the 2020 campaign with a team-high 134 tackles, in addition to six tackles for loss, four passes defended, two sacks and a forced fumble. The Jets would be wise to re-sign Hewitt to pair with C.J. Mosley in the team’s 3-4 defensive scheme or to hang onto as depth.

3 - CB Brian Poole
Poole’s 2020 season ended prematurely due to knee and shoulder injuries suffered in Week 9.However, Poole is only a season removed from being one of the better nickel corners across the league. When healthy, he’s proven to be a valuable contributor to Gang Green’s secondary. His loss was certainly felt within the slot, as the Jets struggled to find consistency with a young and inexperienced depth chart.Even though Javelin Guidry showed promise in a limited role, the undrafted free agent’s resume doesn’t hold a candle to Poole’s. Bringing back Poole would certainly inspire some confidence in a secondary in the midst of a youth movement.

4 - OLB Tarell Basham

Basham’s play down the stretch demonstrated that he could have a future in New York.He cemented himself as a situational pass-rusher for the Jets and has excelled in that role. He by no means will single-handily solve New York’s pass-rushing woes, which have plagued the team since John Abraham left. However, his ability to get after the quarterback could improve with the proper coaching.

5 - OL Pat Elflein

While the Jets obviously won’t be owners of the No. 1 pick, they took advantage of having waiver claim priority while they could. That came in handy when the Vikings elected to waive Pat Elflein. After Alex Lewis was placed on the NFI, the Jets threw Elflein into the fire and he quickly became Mekhi Becton’s counterpart on the left side. Not only can Elflein play all the interior positions across the line, but he’s a bully in the running game as well. He’s also drawn praise from Becton’s trainer and former Jets OL Damien Woody.Elflein can be a cost-effective starter, plugged in at left guard, while New York devotes the team’s money and resources to upgrade other positions of need.

Imagine having 25 players, deemed worthy of occupying half our roster spots for a season, hit free agency and the only ones anyone's seriously interested in retaining are names like Maye, Poole, Hewitt, and/or insert name of another guy any & every champion could well do without.

This ****ing team we root for. Holy hell.
