Prescott

Recommended Posts

I found out the other day that dak prescott will be an unrestricted FA.  Wouldnt it make sense to sign him even though he is coming off an injury, he is still in his prime and use the #2 pick and grab devonta smith and possible najee harries with the #27 pick then build the OL in the later rounds. Just a thought.

We need a reset to a QB on a rookie deal which would give us a big advantage on the likes of the Ravens, Browns, and Bills who are about to get strapped with max deals and whose playoff spots we need to take.

This would be the opposite.

No.  No Prescott and no Watson.  Nothing against them but if we are starting over at QB we need a young in a rookie deal.  I don’t want to trade assets to get a QB or a coach.  We have too many holes we need to fill

The best deal in sport is a legit FQB. Even at $40M/year. Nuk and Joey Bosa each make $27M on a per year basis. Mahomes makes $50M. Mahomes is much more than 2x as impactful as either of those guys.

IF we got either of these dudes, JD would be wise to restructure and accelerate a lot of their salary to a 2021 bonus, when we have tons of cap space -- not the mention the $10M we free up by trading Sam. This would give us a FQB on a very team-friendly contract in 2022 and beyond. We also have no in-house talent worthy of a big extension in the next several years. Unlike, say, the Jags, who have more space but they have some talent getting close to extension time. From a cap perspective, we're in the best position in the NFL to trade for a FQB. Still don't believe either will shake loose, though.

This is a pretty poor start for you.

i don’t think he returns to football until 2022.  I wouldn’t go near him unless it was at a massive discount

I rather kick the tires with a Dak, that has a flat, than deal with another season of bottom 5 QB play, 3 seasons of that trash has been enough ?‍♂️

I repeat the Jets aren't one player away, it would be stupid to
destroy our cap flexibility on a big $$$ QB when we still need:

- To shore up RG & RT
- A WR
- A CB
- At least 2 edge rushers

If we make these proposed deals we would become just like DET
& HOU.  Teams with stat producing QB's who don't win, no thanks

For some Jets fans, the future is always a season away.

16 of the last 20 SBs have been won by a HOF or HOF-bound QB. 19 of 20 by a QB with at least one pro bowl appearance.

Getting a good QB is rebuilding. Granted in a perfect world sure I'd prefer a good QB on a rookie deal. But anyone can bust...

The cowboys will not let him go to free agency. They'll use the franchise tag on him and try to work out a contract. If not, he'll play another season on the franchise tag. If he plays poorly or the cowboys just arent sold, he'd have a chance to take the Cousins route and hit free agency in 2022 but he won't be available this year as a Free agent.

The trouble is you'd be wasting that good QB on a sheeyt team for the next couple of years.

Dak was a top-15, maybe top-10 QB who wants to be paid like a top-2 QB.

Pass.

The Goff contract messed up the negotiations a lot.   Dak wanted more than Goff, because he was (pre injury) much better than Goff.

Then it was about years, Dak wanted 4, Cowboys wanted 5.   Then his ankle fell off.

Here are the top-12 QB contract situations currently:

Player Team Age Total
Value
Avg./Year Total
Guaranteed
Fully
Guaranteed
Free
Agency
Patrick Mahomes Chiefs 26 $450,000,000 $45,000,000 $141,000,000 $63,081,905 2032 UFA
Deshaun Watson Texans 26 $156,000,000 $39,000,000 $111,894,247 $74,894,247 2026 UFA
Russell Wilson Seahawks 33 $140,000,000 $35,000,000 $107,000,000 $70,000,000 2024 UFA
Ben Roethlisberger Steelers 39 $68,000,000 $34,000,000 $50,000,000 $37,500,000 2022 UFA
Aaron Rodgers Packers 38 $134,000,000 $33,500,000 $98,200,000 $78,700,000 2024 UFA
Jared Goff Rams 27 $134,000,000 $33,500,000 $110,042,682 $57,042,682 2025 UFA
Kirk Cousins Vikings 33 $66,000,000 $33,000,000 $96,000,000 $61,000,000 2023 UFA
Carson Wentz Eagles 29 $128,000,000 $32,000,000 $107,870,683 $66,470,683 2025 UFA
Dak Prescott Cowboys 28 $31,409,000 $31,409,000 $31,409,000 $31,409,000 2021 UFA
Matt Ryan Falcons 36 $150,000,000 $30,000,000 $100,000,000 $94,500,000 2024 UFA
Ryan Tannehill Titans 33 $118,000,000 $29,500,000 $91,000,000 $62,000,000 2024 UFA

And Mahomes and Watson, at least, signed those extensions after Prescott's last round of negotiations.

So where does he belong?  Pre-injury, I'd say it would be a slight stretch to put him at $35M/year.  That's north of where Rodgers and Ben were and even with Wilson.  Looking back to before this season, Prescott was probably more in the Wentz/Ryan/Cousins territory.  Cousins is probably a great comp since they both do well on good teams but nothing in the playoffs.

Now it's a bit trickier since Wilson and Roethlisberger both crapped the bed, but I still would be shocked if he got more than Rodgers and Goff.  And then you have to factor in the ankle, which DAL should and Prescott won't.  If Jerry didn't have a long history of caving, I'd say this deal never happens, but with Jerry, who knows.

But if Prescott is actually looking for $40M/year which the rumors suggested, that would put him above Watson and that's where things go off the rails.

I have to agree with SAR.

Paying $40 Mil per year to a QB that hasn't won anything ever isn't a good idea.

Need to get a rookie on a cheap rookie deal.

I think we are becoming a little too confident that QBs can comeback from horrific leg injuries because Bridgewater and Alex Smith came back and were...ok

Throwing Mechanics for a QB is everything it’s just as important as reading defenses.  There’s no way we can give Dak a big contract now

Not really. like everyone else throwing ideas that could potentially help the team, like douglas will listen to us.

You might benefit  from reading the board and knowing peoples thoughts before suggesting signing an injured QB who is due a huge pay increase as the route to take.

How do you think the Dolphins feel about not signing a QB with a dislocated throwing shoulder in Brees? Obviously you do your due diligence with Dak but if he’s even at 70%, that’s would instantly make him the Jets best QB since, well Joe Namath. If he’s healed, and he should be healed soon, he can tear it up, metaphorically, with D Smith and Allen Robinson. I’m all for exploring this possibility.
