Popular Post jetstream23
"That's attacking the ball, all gas, no brakes and playing with extreme violence," Saleh said as cheers erupted. Quote SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Among the 15 or so panelists leading the conversation at the San Francisco 49ers' "State of the Franchise" event last week, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh probably said the fewest words. But if efficiency of words counts for anything, Saleh might have done more than any of the other speakers to ingratiate himself with the fan base. The new man in charge of the Niners' defense cuts an imposing figure. When he speaks, he gets right to the point. It's a straightforward approach that Saleh hopes carries over to his defense. Here are a couple of examples from the event: • Asked what his primary focus for training camp would be, Saleh said it would be establishing the style of defense the Niners want to play. What is that style? "That's attacking the ball, all gas, no brakes and playing with extreme violence," Saleh said as cheers erupted. • Asked what he hopes teams will worry about when they are preparing to play the Niners, Saleh again didn't mince words. "It goes back to our style," Saleh said. "I want them to see our style on tape, and if they're thinking about our violence on Wednesday, we feel like we're already ahead of the game." While all of that sounds good, the onus is still on the Niners to install their scheme and build that identity. How? While certain schemes ask so much of players that they have to spend too much time thinking and have little opportunity to do anything but react, Saleh views attitude and scheme as concepts that complement each other. To start, the 49ers are making the move from a true 3-4 scheme to a modified 4-3 defense that will switch over and under alignments, based on opponents and situations. The defense has its roots in what Seattle's Pete Carroll has done for a long time, and Carroll has often described it as a 4-3 defense with 3-4 personnel. It also can be found in places such as Jacksonville, Atlanta and San Diego. Put in the simplest terms, the 49ers' base defense will regularly have eight defenders (four down linemen, three linebackers and a strong safety) near the line of scrimmage, one safety patrolling the middle of the field and Cover 3 zone as the primary coverage. The biggest change from Niners defenses of recent vintage is that Saleh's system is a one-gap scheme, rather than the two-gap responsibilities of the recent past. In other words, where defenders once had to worry about the gap on either side of them, wait for the play to develop and then make a move, they now can focus on handling their assignments. That leads to more attacking and less reacting. "I think this style of defense is good for any player, in that it allows them to free their mind so they can play to their God-given ability," Saleh said. "To attack an offense, giving a player all of their athletic ability, all of their strength, whatever it is. Freeing them mentally is what this defense is built on. Being able to play as fast as possible and as physical as possible within the scheme." At this point in the offseason program, Niners defenders have yet to see what that freedom will yield in terms of results. In the small bits and pieces they've been able to experience so far, though, the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. "It allows us to play fast as hell and let us do things that we do naturally as football players," defensive end Aaron Lynch said. "It doesn’t take us out of our zone, so I can’t answer that it’s going to make us better, but I feel like if we keep doing what we’re doing, we will be a better defense." Cornerback Rashard Robinson used the word "fun" to describe the new defense last week, explaining that there isn't as much to comprehend, which means it's up to the player to do his job on every snap. For a defense that was the worst in the league last season and particularly porous against the run, the Niners hope a change in scheme will bring instant results and bring out the best in players such as linebacker Eli Harold, Lynch, defensive linemen Arik Armstead, Tank Carradine and others who haven't yet lived up to their draft status or early promise. "I love this scheme," Harold said. "Just look at what Seattle did. Jacksonville was top-10 in defense last year. I feel like no matter who you have, depending on the scheme, I feel like that determines how successful the team is going to be. I feel like certain schemes allow certain guys to play to the best of their ability." To this point, Saleh has had no trouble convincing his players to buy what he's selling. The 49ers have battles at plenty of positions on the defense and plan to make those competitions a staple of training camp this summer. Through the first two weeks of organized team activities, the 49ers have been able to install most of the defense. The offense will take a little bit longer, and then both sides will have a refresher course at the outset of training camp. In the meantime, the defense can get a head start on building the hard-hitting attitude Saleh desires. “For every defensive player, to me, that mindset of taking it personal every single snap, to just have an edge to you [is important]," Saleh said. "Defense is an emotional part of the football game, and to have that mindset, is it a prerequisite? It’s not. But you always find the ones that have got that dog in them. They manage to find a way to get it done.” 6

pointman
I had a coach like that. Great dude. Loved him. Wanted to run through hell for him. I'd say 70% of the team wound up with head injuries with long term deliciousness. Good times.

MykePM
While we’re posting “getting to know you” Saleh links, here is a great interview from Adam Schefter’s podcast last month. Beyond X’s and O’s, I really came away extremely impressed by how intelligent, articulate and classy Saleh is. A lot of the testimonials for him from his players and fellow coaches have talked about what a great man he is. This interview provides a great view into that... https://open.spotify.com/episode/40a92GqRQFxXXLejtIJy8u?si=XYC9g9CmSY-6NXNK6S1_HQ 4

It's been two years. He's done. Does Mosely have the speed to be a 4-3 MLB. Typically 3-4 LBs are bigger across the board since they have one less D lineman occupying the O line and the “beef” is needed to slow a power rushing game. Frankly, I think the Jets may have to revamp the entire LB group. Many are not suited to be a 4-3 LB and it is a very weak group to start with. I wouldn’t be surprised if the jets draft 2 or even 3 LBs.

Get a CB opposite Bryce Hall and find that ever-elusive edge rusher for the Jets....and then lookout!
