Anyone who suggests trading for Matt Stafford over Deshaun Watson while "k33pInG MOAR PicKS" gets their dick stomped on.

I've been harping on the Jets not to become HOU or DET.  Teams with high priced, stat producing QB's but incomplete rosters that don't win.  And now in the space of a week both teams are in turm

This. We have been looking for a franchise QB for 50 years.  Now, we hve the #2 overall pick, choice of any QB in the draft other than Lawrence.  This season.  Or, we may have an opportunity to acquir

Another team who could be looking to trade up to #2...or for Sam. Beautiful.

Issue then being he goes to a team that could have traded for Sam haha Unless he goes to the Pats but then that's a whole other headache

This would be the perfect timing for the Texans to move Deshaun to us. They acquire the #2 from us and instantly deal it to Detroit for #7 and some picks/players. It leaves them in a good spot to land one of the available QB's at 7 and build up their roster. Win..Win..Win for all.

That sounds more like a NY Jets plan, don't you think?

This probably hurts the trade sam option since he’d be a better win now option for a good team.

But Darnold was never a "win now" option.  He's a project.  And I'm not just saying that because he is, I truly think he's perceived to be a project around the league.

Gotta agree here. As much as I want Watson and think this would be something we absolutely must pursue through completion...it has a pipe dream feel to it.

No harm chopping it up about the possibilities though.

But reality is Darnold or Wilson will probably be our choices.

It’s a strong possibility we can get him. No one has the ammunition we have. Watson wants to come here. He wants out of Texas. The Fins don’t have what we can offer. Nor will they give up on Tua so quickly. It’s just a matter of JD staying patient and not getting played. What other team can offer Texas more? I don’t see it. Even if another team offers more, it would still be worth less than our #2 and a 1st next year. And Watson also has right of refusal.  This is bugged. I feel sorry for Texans because JD is no push over. He’s not going to bend over backwards. Saleh has already made an imprint on this organization.

Stafford and Watson are the only good things that happened to the Lions and Texans in decades.

That's not a reason to avoid acquiring a QB.  You just have to do better at building around one than the Texans and Lions did.

Agree but...

• Watson still hasn’t officially requested a trade.

• Texans have said they have no intention of trading him.

• Watson doesn’t have much leverage if Houston refuses to trade him. Sitting out will cost Watson a fortune.

• I think this is a Watson power play to get a coach he wants.

Posters who are saying "Trade down this year and get the QB later."

I counter with "Trade down next year after we get our QB"   That's easier.

This year we have a #2 overall pick and this will potentially get a bounty.

We assumably are not going to be #2  overall next year.

If the GM loves Fields or wilson he should draft them at #2, if they can get watson at an acceptably price they should make that deal.

If they do not love fields or wilson and if the price for watson is too high you do not 'get s Qb' just because we have a need.

Sometimes you gotta pay up to WIN!

HES A FRANCHISE QB AT 25!!!! GO GET HIM (WATSON THAT IS)

There is more than one way to build a team and win and be good long term.

No worries, I am sure Douglas is not listening to us on this forum.

The most effective way involves having an elite QB.

I'm not down with getting Watson but this is certainly logical as far as compensation. I'm just disappointed when many treat the 2nd overall pick as if it's some pick in the 20s and included it with a bundle of other 1st rounders. Is the 2 overall pick by itself not worth 3 first rounders or close to it?

Correct.

If the Jets I’d be interested enough to contact the Lions. His remaining two years contract pays him 43 million which isn’t bad. We might be able to get him without getting rid of our overall 2. Maybe the 23 could do it. Then we could trade Sam and maybe get a 2 or a 3.

Yes, you are correct BUT, building a complete roster and not having a QB is bad too.  (INDY, SF, Rams, Jets w/Sanchez)

So the answer is to do both - build the team and get the QB (in any order).  KC order (Team first) or Arizona, Buf order (QB first).

Getting QB is harder, so if one pops into your lap, take him. (2017 draft lesson).

Buffalo has been drafting lights out for years.

Why would we want Stafford?  The allure of Watson is that he can be a top QB for at least the next 10 years, giving us plenty of time to build.  Stafford may only have a few good years left in him, and there's no guarantee that we'll be championship contenders by then.  This is an honest question, not a snarky rebuttal.

The Stafford trade may be worked out by the Super Bowl. Hell it could even get worked out at the Senior Bowl. Reminds me when Alex Smith got traded to Washington on January 30 in 2018.

Obviously anything could happen but wouldn't you think these teams wait on the Watson situation, then Stafford, Then Wentz etc. Kind of like how the HC"s went? Teams generally wait on best asset then move on etc?

I think end result Watson gets his way and Texans hire Bieniemy to calm things down.

I'd rather give up 21, 23 and 2 1s next year in this scenario.  I'm not really an advocate of Watsons behavior, as it sets precedent.

It looks like the Lions will  save 14M and take a 19M hit in dead money on trading Stafford. Stafford's new team requiring 23.5M cap space for Stafford unless he signs a new back loaded deal.

Even if they had the players and draft choices, there is a quite a few cap strapped teams that might possibly need a QB who would struggle to fit Stafford under their cap. That list includes Houston (post Watson), New Orleans, Philly and Pittsburgh. The Rams, Giants, Bears would all look better with Stafford under center but they would struggle to fit him under the cap.

It's got to affect the trade market for Stafford.

Presuming that he wants to go to a team with a legitimate chance to compete for the playoffs in 2021, possible destinations in the AFC with cap space, Colts,  Dolphins, and less likely in the NFC the 49'ers ...

It's unlikely the Patriots would give up the compensation; would he be willing to go to a roster that depleted ?

I presume he wants to win next year so that rules out  Washington, Jags, Jets, Panthers, Broncos.

I've heard talk of Stafford to Pats for a couple months already up here.  Belichick really likes him, Pats would be a scary good landing spot for him if they can get him a couple speedy yac receivers.

The precedent that would be set is don't trade away the best WR in the game and alienate your QB, because he might want out.

Oh I agree I don't see a trade happening, but if a trade were to happen, they can probably get him by swapping 2021 1sts and sending a 2022 1st. They'd probably turn around and trade Darnold to the Colts or 49ers for a 2nd

I agree.  I think we should take wilson at 2 and rebuild from the ground up.

But, if Douglas likes stafford, Give the lions the 2nd pick in the draft and take their 7th pick and throw in a 3rd.
