I think McGovern will be a goner in 2022.

Signing Martin and Thuney would anchor the IOL for the next 4-5 years.

I think he’s decent, played on a bad OL collectively, and will be cost effective if we are going to spend big on a Thuney.

Clearly Linsley should be the top OL option for us, but Martin + Thuney isn’t a bad back up plan.

Look at the IOL the Jets passed on last year to draft Davis, Zuniga, Perine and Morgan.

Very frustrating to have to still look to fill IOL in FA and the draft this year.

Usually don’t look too much into these things having any meaning...but they did edit the Sam to Herndon TD, so you don’t even see Sam...but they left Joe in for his throw

Martin, while barely average in run blocking, is an above average pass protector.

As much as people are mocking Curtis Samuel, Allen Robinson and JuJu to the Jets, I think Douglas may go for the quantity approach and sign Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne.

We would  be looking a lot better at Wr right now if he would have picked one of the many good Wr prospects later in last years draft instead of his lousy round 4 .

Yeah I'm still giving Douglas grief for this.

We’re still a long way from the 2021 NFL Draft, which begins April 29.

But it’s never too early to think about what the Jets might do.

So with that in mind, let’s bring you our latest Jets seven-round mock draft projection — for all nine of general manager Joe Douglas’ picks. He has two in Rounds 1, 3, and 5 (because of trades with the Seahawks and Giants) and one in Rounds 2, 4, and 6.

We used fanspeak.com’s mock draft simulator to do the non-Jets picks here, in order to make this exercise more realistic.

And remember, compensatory picks haven’t yet been handed out — the Jets aren’t projected to get any — so that will impact the draft order after Round 3. The first comp pick comes after the final regular pick in that round.

Here goes ...

 

Round 1 (second overall): QB Zach Wilson, BYU

 

We don’t think Sam Darnold is franchise quarterback material. Trade him now, while his value is higher than it will be after he inevitably struggles again in 2021. And unless Douglas is able to trade for the Texans’ Deshaun Watson, the smart move is to take the best quarterback available (Wilson) with the second overall pick.

 

Sure, Douglas could retain Darnold, trade back, and accumulate picks as insurance against Darnold stinking in 2021 — if Douglas perhaps has to use those picks to trade up for a quarterback in 2022. But there are too many what-ifs in that scenario. Just take Wilson — unless a Watson trade materializes, of course.

 

Round 1 (23rd overall, from Seahawks): CB Patrick Surtain II, Alabama

 

The first big draft piece from the Jamal Adams trade. Douglas needs to make good on the two first-rounders he got from Seattle. It would be a surprise to see Surtain fall this far. But if he’s available, the cornerback-needy Jets should take him. South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn is also an option at No. 23 — and he’s likelier than Surtain to be available at this spot.

 

Round 2 (34th overall): RB Travis Etienne, Clemson

 

The Jets won’t be getting Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, but they can land one of his top weapons. Is this too high for a running back? Maybe. But the Jets need to put some playmakers around their quarterback in 2021, regardless of who that quarterback is.

Round 3 (66th overall): C Landon Dickerson, Alabama

 

Douglas signed center/guard Connor McGovern last offseason, and he failed to impress. Because of McGovern’s contract structure, Douglas can’t cut him this offseason, though McGovern could be moved to guard. Either way, Douglas needs to find a long-term solution at center. And Dickerson could be it.

 

Round 3 (87th overall, from Seahawks): ILB Jabril Cox, LSU

 

C.J. Mosley returns in 2021, after opting out of the 2020 season due to coronavirus concerns. So he will be the Jets’ middle linebacker in new coach Robert Saleh’s 4-3 defense. But Douglas could have to fill the vacancy left by Neville Hewitt’s likely departure in free agency. Cox thrived at LSU last season after transferring from North Dakota State.

 

Round 4 (98th overall): CB Rodarius Williams, Oklahoma State

 

The Jets have a lot of questions at cornerback — both in terms of starters and depth players. Williams is the older brother (by about 15 months) of Browns cornerback Greedy Williams, a second-round pick in 2019.

 

Round 5 (130th overall): Edge rusher Rashad Weaver, Pittsburgh

Free agency will dictate a lot of the Jets’ draft plans, of course. They could be in the mix for Buccaneers edge rusher Shaquil Barrett, which would mean they wouldn’t need to draft an edge rusher high. Still, they need depth at the position. Weaver had 7.5 sacks last year.

Round 5 (138th overall, from Giants? WR Austin Watkins, Alabama-Birmingham

 

The final piece of the Leonard Williams trade. The first was safety Ashtyn Davis in Round 3 last year. As with edge rusher, the Jets could make a big-splash receiver acquisition in free agency. If they don’t, then obviously they’d be thinking about picking a receiver higher than this. (Ditto for edge rusher, of course.) But between Jamison Crowder, Denzel Mims, and a newly signed free agent receiver, the Jets would have a solid trio. Watkins would provide depth.

 

Round 6 (162nd overall): WR Marquez Stevenson, Houston

 

At this point in the draft, you’re looking for depth and special teams help. But the Jets need no reminders that a sixth-round receiver can turn into a productive player. They drafted Quincy Enunwa in Round 6 in 2014. By his third season, he had become a productive, promising player — 857 yards and four touchdowns in 2016. Unfortunately, a neck injury derailed his career.

In regards to Allen Robinson: Rumblings of the Bears being prepared to use their franchise tag on the No. 1 receiver surfaced last month, and GM Ryan Pace broached the subject Tuesday.

“The franchise tag is an option for us,” Pace said, via The Athletic’s Adam Jahns (on Twitter). “It doesn’t mean we’re necessarily going to use that. But we want to keep our good players. And Allen is a good player for us.”

Kyle Rudolph‘s 10-year run with the Vikings will conclude. The Vikings are releasing their longest-tenured player, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter). The team confirmed the move.

The Falcons made longtime safety starter Ricardo Allen a cap casualty last month. The Bengals are exploring the prospect of bringing him in.

Allen is visiting the Bengals on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. Because Allen is a street free agent, he would be able to sign with another team at any point.

C samuel who some people absolutely love, would be an big Upgrade, so decent price I'm all for it, but just because he is big Upgrade to us, he really is just an NFL quality wide out and not super talented. Easily a nfl WR 2 talent and would be a big help. I'm all for singing him over say resigning a scrub like crowder the forever WR3 with no upside play that our fans seem intent in keeping for no reason.

Be careful what you wish for.

That’s what an anonymous NFL executive told SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano when it comes to the New York Jets trying to trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Yes, the 25-year-old Watson is about to hit the prime of his career. And yes, he’s already been selected for the Pro Bowl three times.

But to get something, you have to give something. For the Jets, that could mean parting with multiple first-round picks and possibly multiple starting players. What general manager Joe Douglas must decide is how much is too much.

“One thing to remember is that if the Jets give up all their best assets – players and draft picks – they’d be left with a top-five quarterback on a bottom-two team,” said one NFL executive. “Never mind that Watson might not waive his no-trade clause to go to a team that just gutted itself. Why would they do that? As good as Watson is, the Texans were 4-12 last season. He can’t do it by himself.”

Watson led the NFL with 4,823 passing yards last season, despite losing top wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals. Those are the same Cardinals which signed former Texans defensive end J.J. Watt this week to a two-year, $28 million contract.
