Would this be an indication we are more likely leaning towards keeping sam with their history at USC

Doubt it. They're looking to build the team around the QB, regardless who that QB is. Would indicate that they feel his style and price point fits the system they're looking to implement. Chris Godwin is their top option in FA, but no one realistically expects him to get free.

Personally, not a huge fan. I'll take him, but imo he's a big slot receiver and can be a distraction. I'd prefer someone else

Agreed. Juju’s good, but for the $ he wants...is he worth the headache? I guess we’ll see.

Not thrilled with this, Smith-Schuster has turned into too much of a social media clown recently

I like JuJu's game.  He's tough as nails.

Crowder's making 11M next year, he's getting cut.

Assuming Arob, Godwin and Golladay are franchised or don't want to come here...  JuJu's the next best option.  Who else would you want?

Top NFL free agent wide receivers in 2021

1) Allen Robinson, Chicago Bears
2) Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
3) JuJu Smith-Schuster, Pittsburgh Steelers
4) Kenny Golladay, Detroit Lions
5) Will Fuller, Houston Texans
6) Marvin Jones Jr., Detroit Lions
7) A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals
? T.Y. Hilton, Indianapolis Colts
9) Sammy Watkins, Kansas City Chiefs
10) Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals

NFL source on why Jets should trade No. 2 draft pick over Sam Darnold

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold pass vs Los Angeles Rams

For all the talk about Sam Darnold’s value and whether the Jets will eventually trade him, the truth is they’re sitting on a much more valuable asset.

And there’s a chance they’ll eventually trade that instead.

“They would get way more for the No. 2 pick (in the 2021 draft),” said an NFL source. “Even if they just traded down a few spots, that’s where the real value is.”

That’s true, based on the history of teams trading up in the draft, where even a move of a few spots could bring a bonanza of draft picks. Just three years ago it cost the Jets three second-round picks to move up three spots, from No. 6 to No. 3, where they drafted Darnold.

That’s a lot more than what many believe Darnold’s value will be on the trade market now: A second-round pick, plus an additional mid-to-late-round pick.

So that’s a good guide to what the Jets could expect if they swapped picks with, say, the Atlanta Falcons at No. 4, if they were interested in drafting the successor to Matt Ryan. But just imagine what they could get if the Jets were willing to trade down even further, like with the Carolina Panthers at No. 8 or the Denver Broncos at No. 9 – two teams that are definitely in the market for new quarterback.

“Someone is going to fall in love with Zach Wilson or Justin Fields,” the source said. “They’ll see them as a blank slate, with none of the baggage a Sam Darnold carries after three years of struggling. They’ll see only their bright future and they’ll start to feel like they just can’t miss their chance to grab the next, great franchise quarterback.

“It always happens when there are two or three quarterbacks at the top of the draft. Always.”

That was definitely true in 2018 when the Jets weren’t the only ones who traded up. The Buffalo Bills traded up from 21 to 12 and then to 7 to get Josh Allen (first trading left tackle Cordy Glenn to Cincinnati, and then sending two second-round picks to Tampa Bay). And the Cardinals jumped from 15 to 10 for Josh Rosen (sending a third and fifth-round pick to Oakland). Three teams traded up for quarterbacks in 2017 too. The Bears sent two thirds and a fourth to San Francisco to move from 3 to 2 for Mitch Trubisky. The Chiefs sent a third and a future first to Buffalo to go from 27 to 10 for Patrick Mahomes. And the Texans sent a future first-rounder to Cleveland to move from 25 to 12 for Deshaun Watson.

And famously in 2016 the Rams and Eagles traded up in blockbuster deals for the top two picks in the draft. The Eagles sent a third, a fourth and a future first and second to Cleveland to move from 8 to 2 for Carson Wentz, and the Rams sent two seconds, a third and a future first and third to Tennessee to move up from 15 to 1 for Jared Goff. (Both quarterbacks, ironically, were traded in the last two weeks).

Obviously the cost to move up in the draft can be high, especially into the Top 5. So it stands to reason that, depending on how much longer the NFL’s offseason quarterback carousel spins, the Jets could get some pretty big offers from teams like the Falcons, Panthers, Broncos, or even from teams further down like the San Francisco 49ers at 12.

The bounty could be really enticing for a GM like Joe Douglas who seems so intent on acquiring picks and building through the draft.

First, though, he needs to make what will likely be the biggest decision of his tenure with the Jets: Whether they should stick with Darnold, or whether they should be the ones taking Wilson or Fields at No. 2. It’s still possible they’ll be the ones who fall in love with one of those quarterbacks, both for their talent and for the fiscal bonus of having a quarterback on a rookie contract for the next four years.

They could also decide to keep Darnold and the No. 2 pick, using it to draft a top receiver like LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase or a top tackle like Oregon’s Penei Sewell.

But there will be some appeal in trading down in the draft, especially if the return is as abundant as some think it will be.

NFL BY NEW ARENA STAFF

Way-Too-Early 2021 NFL Mock Draft

2. New York Jets: QB Justin Fields (Ohio State)

NFL Comparison: Aaron Rodgers

After two shocking victories down the stretch, the Jets’ “wins” cost them the first overall pick. However, in most years, Fields would be a lock for the No. 1 spot. Falling into New York’s lap would still be a major boon for the franchise. As we’ve seen in recent years, dual-threat quarterbacks have had real success in the NFL. However, don’t let Fields’ elusiveness fool you — he’s a thrower of the football first and foremost. Additionally, he’s a natural leader, something that the Jets’ locker room could use. Fields would immediately start for a franchise in need of a major talent injection.

Sam Darnold to the Bears? NFL Insider Predicts Chicago Will Trade For New York's Quarterback

MAX GOODMAN

With Carson Wentz headed to Indianapolis, will Sam Darnold be the next quarterback sent to the Midwest this offseason?

ESPN's NFL insider Field Yates predicted this week that Darnold will be traded from New York to Chicago, giving the Bears a new franchise quarterback for the future while the Jets start anew at the position.

Here's more from Yates on why Darnold would be a good fit for the Bears:

The Bears need to win right away or organizational changes seem imminent, and while Darnold has much to prove, he has supporters within the NFL that could create a trade market.

Why would Chicago be willing to commit to Darnold in a trade and (likely) a fifth-year option when the Jets wouldn't? Simple. Bears GM Ryan Pace has to be much more focused on 2021 than life beyond it. Darnold represents a likely upgrade over what the Bears have in place, and there's certainly a chance he could rise under different circumstances than what he had in New York. But honestly, it's hard to peg the Bears' next starter.

The 23-year-old certainly appears to have untapped potential, despite struggling mightily through his first three NFL seasons. The question is, can Darnold unlock that next level of production in Chicago?

For reference, the Bears pick 20th overall in the first round this spring and then have the 52nd and 84th overall selections in the second and third round respectively. It's hard to imagine Chicago parting with their first-rounder for Darnold, but as more teams reach out to New York, who knows what the asking price is for the quarterback. A package around a second-round pick, similar to what it took for the Colts to get Carson Wentz, is probably more realistic.

As for what Darnold's departure would mean for the Jets, Yates sees New York taking BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the No. 2 pick. Here's Yates on the move:

The Jets could build around Sam Darnold using the trove of draft picks they have both this year and next, but committing to him on the fifth-year option this offseason (which fully guarantees somewhere around $25M in 2022) is a heavier-handed investment than the team likely wants to make after an uneven start to his career.

The Jets must also evaluate the opportunity cost. The team is hopeful and believes a turnaround is coming soon, meaning a pick this high in the draft won't be a certainty going forward. If they pass on a young quarterback now, and Darnold is not the long-term answer, the Jets' avenue to quarterback stability is harder to find. And Wilson could be special.

If you're curious, Yates has the quarterback carrousel continuing across the league. The insider envisions Marcus Mariota starting 2021 with the New England Patriots, Ryan Fitzpatrick under center for the Washington Football Team, Justin Fields starting out the Houston Texans and ... Deshaun Watson in a Carolina Panthers uniform.

I wonder if the board opinion will change on Juju assuming ARob, Godwin, Golladay, and Samuel don't hit the market.

Godwin I think is the longest of shots to hit the market. ARob will probably want $20mm/yr and you'd have to give up a 1st or second for the right to pay him. Golladay I'd guess would be a tag and trade candidate as well, and he has the exact same style as Denzel Mims, so while I would like him his skill set is somewhat redundant.

If Samuel is re-signed Juju is by far the best scheme fit available. I get he dances and stuff and that pisses people off, but he is young, relatively healthy, good with the ball in his hands after the catch, good over the middle, good blocker, can play inside and out, and he actually plays really physical/tough. Shannahan system requires players that can win in the middle and produce after the catch, he'd be a perfect scheme fit - just don't download tiktok and you have nothing to worry about.

JuJu is the only guy on the list who’s pretty much guaranteed to be available. Smart of Douglas to not **** around waiting on dudes who aren’t yet available and just throw some money at a position of dire need, especially if he wants to take a shot at Watson. You can sell JuJu, Mims, and maybe Brandin Cooks as a passable offensive package to a guy with a no-trade. If he gives JuJu $15 per, he can still take a run at Godwin or ARob is they shake loose, especially given he’ll free up $10 mil by dumping Crowder.

Jet X guys are way down on Ju Ju ranking him 20 out of 47 free agents.  For perspective, they rank Perriman at #25.  They are very high on Corey Davis FWIW...

Corey Davis would be a good Plan B (and cost effective )if we don’t sign any of Godwin - Arob - JuJu - Samuel

I think JuJu and Samuel fit this offense much better than Corey Davis though.

I think they see Robinson and Golladay as similar role to Mims suggesting Mims would move from "X" to "Z" if we landed one of those guys.  They really like Samuel but I guess he might be considered a replacement for Crowder

Even If we sign JuJu or Samuel we should keep Crowder and draft a WR high in the draft.

JuJu/Samuel + Mims + Crowder + high draft pick and suddenly our Receiving Corp isnt looking too bad.

Corey Davis is a JAG need quality decent WR's for any QB to have any success here.

Meh, that stuff is overblown. He's fine.

He's just tier 2 behind guys like Samuel, Robinson and Golladay.

I mean Samuel is definitely not in Robinson, Golladay, and Godwin’s tier so if JuJu is a tier below Samuel that puts him in tier 3.

The Panthers have cut several players this month, creating some cap space that they’d love to spend on Deshaun Watson.

Carolina’s moves in the last week have cleared nearly $20 million in cap space, which would be enough to absorb Watson’s 2021 cap hit, and the Panthers plan to make a run at Watson if the Texans make him available in a trade, David Newton of ESPN reports. (That is an actual report, although ESPN has given it less attention than the “bold prediction” that the Panthers’ offer would be Christian McCaffrey and three first-round draft picks.)

The phrasing of the report — the Panthers will make a run at Watson if the Texans make him available — is almost identical to a previous report that the Broncos will make an offer for Watson if the Texans make him available. That suggests that multiple teams are waiting around for the Texans to say Watson is on the trading block, and then they’ll pull the trigger on a big offer when and if the Texans give them the go-ahead.

But if you want Watson and think you can make a credible offer for him, why wait? Why not call the Texans now and let them know you’re willing to part with a significant number of draft picks and/or players to get Watson? The worst the Texans can tell you is no. In a best-case scenario, it may begin the process of your team acquiring one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

Watson wants to be traded, and the Texans are saying publicly that they won’t trade him. But there’s likely some trade package good enough that the Texans would make the move. Teams like the Broncos and Panthers appear ready to make those offers.
