Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has asked for a trade, and one Jets great thinks that he is a gifted quarterback.

Appearing on the DiPietro, Canty & Rothenberg show in ESPN NY 98.7, former Jets quarterback and Hall of Famer Joe Namath and said that although he does not watch a lot of film of the games and break down personnel as much as he used to, he thinks that Watson is a good quarterback and ahead of current quarterback Sam Darnold.

Namath said the decision Jets general manager Joe Douglashas to make regarding a possible trade for Watson is critical.

“He looks sensational,” Namath said about Watson. “He’s further along than most of the quarterbacks, including Sam. There’s no doubt about it. Those guys are going to make the decisions in that front office up there, and I hope they make the right decision. I want to see us win. I want to see us start being happy after the game and during the game.”

Namath said that he has had a chance to meet Darnold at the Jets’ football facility and that the players appreciate him, praising Darnold’s leadership. Namath said that Darnold has had issues being consistently accurate but can move around and use his legs.

Namath added that although Darnold can run the ball, he has to be careful because quarterbacks that run a lot do not last long in the league.

“I don’t know what the Jets are planning to do with him,” Namath said. “We need help in a lot of places. Sam has been playing on a team that was pressing to try to get that victory and try to get it done. It remains to be seen what Joe Douglas feels what he can do with him. Sam’s going to be around. I believe he’s going to be around for 15 years.”

He's not even going to be a good backup.  You need a game manage in that role.  Not a guy who pilots a strong roster into the turf.  Throwing into triple coverage off your back foot is not in the best interests of anybody in that role.

Meanwhile, he also can't stay healthy, so having Darnold as your QB2 means you also need to burn a roster spot on a QB3/emergency guy, just in case.

Namath thinks Darnold sucks. He was quoted a month ago saying it was probably time for Darnold to move on. This is Joe just being nice to Darnold on the way out the door

Joe D to Joe N: "Say something that helps Darnold's trade value."

Of course, “He’s further along than most of the quarterbacks, including Sam," does understate the disparity; like, "Driving to CA is farther along the road than getting off at the next exit on the Thruway."

Then again the thing that seemed to bother him most about Sanchez was left-to-right hand position when riding up against Mangold's taint.
