Are we still saying Becton was better then Wirfs

I have to disagree about the idea that there is no real difference between RT and LT.  While pass rushers do change sides occasionally as a strategy, and sometimes the rusher facing the RT actually turns out to have a better year than the one facing the LT, traditionally the coach puts the guy who he thinks is his best rusher vs the LT.

The LT will be facing the best rushers most of the time.  That makes the LT job harder.

This is an all time SOJF post. Becton came out as a long term project and excelled year 1 pretty much exceeding everyone's expectations for him on a crappy team.

But yeah, Wirfs had a better year one. No idea why that should matter to us. Saquon was a better draft pick year 1 than Josh allen. Pretty sure bills fans are happier today than Giants fans.

you don't get it... YOU JUST DON'T GET IT!!!

Lets face it!

If the Jets had drafted Wirfs instead of Becton we would have obviously just WON the SB!!! :)

No there is no difference they only pay LTs MILLIONS more than RT cause teams have nothing better to do with their money!!!

Poor defensive coordinators having no choice but to send their best talent against left tackles. What is it illegal to rush from the right?

Nonsense. Absolute f*cking nonsense.

Considering rushing from the left you are rushing the QBs Blind side (90% of humans are right handed making their blind side their left side)  the best pass rusher is put on the QBs Blind side and the most athletic OT on the left side to protect it.

The QB is more apt to see a rush getting through on the right side because ....you know .... his eyes are on the front of his head.

So yes the right side is easier for the RT to play because of the lesser competition and the fact that the QB can more readily adapt to a bad situation coming from the right. The left side is harder and requires more skill because of logic and evidence.

I actually didn't know that!!!!!!!  I truly though LT were paid more!  I appreciate that Info!!!!

They're paid more by teams.  But the franchise tag, for which the league decides which position groups are put together, lumps LT's and RT's in together.  Not the same thing.

As you can see, the top 10 paid LT's make more than the all but the top 2 paid RT's.

Go down the list even further, and you'll find that the median starting LT gets paid $12M per year.  The median starting RT makes $5.5M.

It's not even a question.  LT's are valued significantly higher than RT's by NFL teams.  Who cares what the league decides when it comes to the franchise tag value.

Can't this fan base just ever be pleased?  JD did fine picking Becton.  We picked a great player.  Yes, winning a super bowl is the ultimate goal, but JD picked a great tackle and now needs to continue to improve the OL and so many other areas.

We don't have to have the best player at every spot, we just need to have strong drafts.

It really, really isn't.

We seen elite pass rushers move to the other side all the time. This absolute nonsense that gets regurgitated time after time is just ridiculous, as if somehow the right side is just innately easier to play or that there's lesser opposition.

Nah, Its all exactly the same. Lol... I mean, blocking for the GOAT who scans, processes, and throws the ball in 0.015 seconds, and having Sam "Slow football brain" Darnold running around terrified behind you for no reason trying to figure out what's going on in front of him.

Same. Exact. Thing.

Big Bird.  Which suggests that he is a predator.  How's that for ruining fond childhood memories...

Big Bird is and always has been a predatory raptor.

He's what transformed the team. Had Brady been behind Jameis' line they probably don't make the playoffs.

There's no complaints with Becton but Wirfs is exceptional. For all those who play down the importance of right tackle look no further than his impact.

So are we  going to see articles about how Wirfs won the SB like we see with Brady?  Let's start comparing the SB records of right tackles and assign wins and losses just as they do with QBs and completely ignore that football is the ultimate team sport and dozens of factors and elements go into winning and losing.

It's a team sport.  If you don't see how Wirfs had every advantage over Becton, from playing an easier position to playing with a better coaching staff, to playing with a better QB whose lineman rarely have penalties called on them, to playing on a better offense, to playing with better players on the OL, to having a ridiculously good group of WRs, to playing on a team with one of the best defenses in the NFL.... I could go on and on.

Sure, all true. Wirfs will slide over to LT after next season when Smith leaves. Becton looked good at times and struggled at times. Wirfs was stellar all season. If Becton takes himself out of games again next season with bumps and coughs then the Jets are going to have problems.

Becton's injury record this season is Gase's fault.  Becton entered the Monday night game vs the Pats with a shoulder injury and was inexplicably active but did not start.  He came into the game after his replacement was injured.  Becton should have been inactive.  Instead, he battled a sore shoulder all season.

My question is this... Do you think the Rams in 1997 care they got the second best Tackle in the draft with pick 1?

I am not comparing Wirfs Or Becton to either of Pace or Davis, however they both can play in the league. Both rookies played extremely well in totally different circumstances. I personally think they are both RT. In a perfect world Becton would have been a RT this year of Mac would have drafted Brown Jr the easy pick in the 3rd round. (But let’s not go there)

You are expected to play LT with a sore shoulder. Ask D-Brick. I watched Wirfs all season I can assure you the team who just won the Super Bowl would not trade the player that missed zero snaps and committed one penalty for a guy who struggled with his conditioning and availability all season. Donovan Smith is actually pretty similar to Becton and Wirfs will be replacing him in 2022. Becton certainly has high potential, but he needs to commit himself and toughen up a bit. Wirfs is already there and will be a perennial all-pro.

Becton was tapping out on his own.  aside from the shoulder injury, he was just out of shape.  He said he wanted to play at 350.  He was 15 pounds heavier than that at the combine.  And every bit 390-400 by the end of the season.  Wirfs, OTOH, broke his University's power lifting records and can jump out of pools standing still.  This is not Gase's fault.  Anyone who lived through the Kris Jenkins era is going to be a bit worried about Becton until he gets his weight under control.
