When did you start to lose faith in Sam Darnold?

Indeed. His arm strength is at best average and arguably below average, his accuracy is just about the league's worst and add to that his ghost-induced decision making and the result is: Terrible.  It's apparent that JD needs to rob some team of at least a day 2 pick for him.  I get the dream that most people have that Sam can be coached to at least competency.  But I want more than game managing/competency and have little hope that Sam can be a star.  He'd need to improve his brain-speed, change his atrocious natural insticnts/ habits.  Good luck trying to coach that.

Disagree on the arm strength...it's above average, and he can make every throw needed. Totally agree on the accuracy and the decision making, which is/will be his ultimate downfall. Of the three, arm strength is the least important, and it's why Sam has not gotten any better.

A lot of people... Me included, got suckered in by the rose bowl and then tuned out.

His junior year at USC was completely unimpressive.

The logic behind passing on Watson/Mahomes was the “generational” 2018 QB class headlined by Darnold and Rosen.

I was a big Darnold supporter but I personally lost faith somewhere in the middle of this past season. Week after week of bad decision making and his way too casual attitude for losing and post game "I gotta look at the film" mantra just wore me out.

One more thing - Let's not partake in revisionist history here. Most of the NFL "experts" and top analysts had Darnold as the consensus #1 pick in his draft, and I was excited as hell to get him.

When he didn’t throw at the combine.

Then I convinced myself it was just smart business.

It wasn’t.

You have no proof he didn't throw at the combine. Were you there? You are relying on 3rd party biased reports.

Even if you still believe Darnold can play QB in this league (he can't), how can anyone be cool with him missing 3+ games each of his first 3 seasons in the league?  You simply can't rely on the kid in any facet.  It amazes me there are some out there who want to run it back a 4th time.

I do agree the injuries are another reason to be concerned with Sam. And his play on the field means we don't need more reasons to be concerned, he has earned the doubt on performance alone.

Two random things though:

1. He should put on 15lbs, just hit the gym all offseason. He needs more size

2. Missing 3 games a year on an Adam Gase team makes you an iron man. Damn I don't know what the hell Gase does training wise but everyone is hurt every year. I really hope they fix that this year.

He was soft prior to Gase's arrival though.  Do you remember his rookie year "injury"?  It was as minor as it gets and he still missed 3 games.

He's just not physically or mentally tough.  You can't succeed in the NFL, or have a career turnaround, without those qualities.

Like most I was very excited when the Jets drafted him. Given his age I was prepared for some rookie struggles. I just wanted him to hold his head above water and show some positive momentum his rookie year. His rookie year met my expectations and I was looking forward to a year two jump under an established offensive coach.

I recall the beat writers talking Sam up during training camp in 2019. By all accounts he has an excellent preseason and was positioned for uptick in production. Obviously with the Mono and oline crumbling around him that did not happen.

I still felt okay about him heading into this season, but after his performance in week 1 I was off the bandwagon for good.

I'll go by a game I saw part of in Atlantic City Bally's Casino where in the middle of his 2nd season and which he seemed/seems to keep doing, we were playing the Fins and in the middle of the 3rd qtr only one score down he throws a shotput of the ball into the endzone where there is one Jet WR behind like 3 Fins DBs. I had to see this on a huge screen the size of a big wall like an Imax screen. I have seen him do this before and it ultimately shows poor decsion making and not having a grasp of situational football. Those were things that Sanchez and Gino also did and when QBs make decisions like that when they are in their 2nd year even it is something that likely is not going to change. I expect that with 2 mins left in a game when you are down by 14 or 4th down at the goal line with seconds left in the game, you know situations where you are just trying to give the team the chance to win. But, aside of those cases you either throw it away, check it down, or tuck it and run, end of story.

For me it wasn't so much one game or time period. Its the fact that in year 3 he's still making the same mistakes over and over again. I addition I seriously question Sam's ability to read and diagnose defenses , his best plays come on the run when he freelances and he doesn't have to think and just let's his athleticism take over. Finally its great to be the nice guy, calm cool etc... but I need my QB to be someone who can fire up a team and can get in his players grills if need be - Sam's just too bland for me.

In 2019 season I began to have doubts about him, it was only preseason and everyone here were talking that he looked good in training camp and preseason. Once the regular season began that's when the wheels fell off the wagon. He looked horrible.!!! Then he showed his true colors of tendencies to commit turnovers, during games and finally he went down with mono and missed three games.

Darnold fell out of favor in the Ghost game against the Patriots!!!! So what that he went 6-2 the second half of the season!!!! He continue committing the same boneheaded mistakes during games the next season. He still hasn't played a full season yet as a Jet!!!! Every season there is something with him and he has not shown any promise IMO.

All the hype in college doesn't prove that he was the best QB coming out of college. What we didn't see in college, we got to see up close that Darnold was overhyped!!!

I guess when he had no receivers that could run good routes and catch the ball, when he had no offensive line to protect him more than 2 seconds and when Adam Gase ran the worst offense I’ve seen maybe in my lifetime.

No excuse for all the INT's bad throws and decisions.

I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Darold as a Jet. I could be wrong. Stay tuned for the new Sam Darnold 2.0

The Darnold that is still bad but has good playcalling and good receivers.  Good receivers he fails to see while open or misses with his throws when he does see them.  Can't wait!

Robbie had to stop cold in his tracks every time Darnold tried to throw a 'bomb' to him.  Would have loved to have Robbie miked up after those throws: NFL Films rated X.

i think when discussing darnold it needs to be remembered the whole team was bad.  under the two seasons with gase darnold actually did show some good ability in 2019 when they finsihed the season at 7-9.  darnold missed a few games and no matter what anyone says it took a while for him to get 100% after mono.  his numbers weren't great but just like this past season he was lacking a set of really good receivers and they had injury problems that season too.  fast forward to 2020 and we see darnold trying to win games without any decent receivers for extended periods of time and a bad running game.

i'm not enough of a football guy to say the issues are darnold or the oline or gase but two of the three have been or will be upgraded aand at least this all has to be considered.  and it's not like i have any aversion to drafting a top qb prospect but if the drafted guy is no better then it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Throughout this thread and this site in general people keep saying that Darnold “regressed” after his rookie year due to Gase’s bad coaching as a fact. While Gase is no Lombardi, there was no regression. Sam was actually better by virtually every measure in 2019 than he was in 2018. The fact is he was one of, if not the, single worst quarterback in the league as a rookie. He has not improved in any meaningful way since then, but a regression would mean he was good at one point and then got worse. That simply did not happen. Sam was a bad from day 1 and we need to move on rather than to cling to false narratives.

I never liked the history of USC QB's...the book is large of those crapping out in the NFL.  However, Darnold sold me on his pro day...throwing in the rain and looking very sharp.  BUT, having seen him play these past few years, I haven't watched one game where he looked like a "franchise" type QB...not once.  Even without the best weapons, you gotta show us one time Sammy.  I think it's best to move on.  Sometimes, it's not about the team that surrounds you, the coaching, the playing calling, etc...it's about the player.

I lost faith when during a game this season, when he had room to run downfield to make a third down, and threw some stupid incomplete pass instead. After seeing guys like Josh Allen and Fitz and even one-legged Teddy Bridgewater  showing more athleticism and scrambling ability and moxie and guts than Sam, I lost faith, It's like he still has mono - something very lethargic about him.
