Marcus Maye’s Agent Takes to Twitter to rip Gang Green

Recommended Posts

The Jets always take care of their players

They spend all the money all the time

The owners are not cheap

They got to 80 million under a 180 million cap by accident

The new uniforms look great

It's actually a really well run team, you guys

If Saleh wants Maye JD will sign him to a fair maybe slightly over what he’s worth contract as he is an above average safety and Jets are really devoid of talent so we should keep our better players if possible

Twitter is such a negative place. You could announce that you were giving away a billion dollars to feed homeless disabled kittens, and the twitterverse would still complain.

People on twitter are so negative, it makes this place look like it's full of happy-go-lucky types.

Marcus Maye

While it has been reported that the New York Jets are expected to apply the franchise tag to safety Marcus Maye, it seems his agent is none to happy about the plan.

…Yet refuse to take care of their best player, Captain, & team-voted MVP in his prime who had several All-Pro votes…and who played out his entire rookie deal and even changed positions on his contract year (after they got rid of last yrs All-Pro safety). ✌?

— Erik Burkhardt (@ErikBurkhardt) March 3, 2021

Erik Burkhardt, who works for Maye’s select sports, replied to a tweet from Field Yates that outlined the Jets ability to acquire premium talent this offseason and he didn’t seem to be the least bit happy.

The Jets, according to Burkhardt “refuse to take care of their best player (Maye), captain & team-voted MVP in his prime who had several All-Pro votes…and who played out his entire rookie deal and even changed positions on his contract year (after they got rid of last yrs All-Pro safety), before signing off with the most professional “peace” emoji you’ve ever seen.

A few things here. Maye is a nice player and the Jets should look to retain him, but he’s not the best player on a 2-14 team.  He’s a solid citizen and a guy who has proven a lot of doubters wrong by playing in 32 of 32 games since missing 10 contests a few seasons ago.  That being said, choosing to negotiate via twitter tantrum probably isn’t the best idea for Mayes reps.

Considering that negotiating by Twitter tantrum got Jamal his trade, and there's nothing else Maye can do to avoid the tag, it probably IS the best idea they have

Maye is a good player but why would the jets pay him more than the franchise tag on an annual basis? Maybe they should extend the length of the deal maybe 3 for 30 or something like that, but why pay 3 for 45 or 50 like Maye probably wants? Maye literally has no leverage here.

The days of the Jets paying good players at non premium positions great money are over.

Out with the McCagnan!!!!!!!  Adios Marcus Maye.

This right here! Save the & for difference makers.

Good player yes, but with so many holes to fill, take the tag or bye bye

Exactly. Jets can control Maye on Franchise tags for 2 years at a total of around $24M-$25M.

At the end of those 2 years, Maye would be entering his age 30 season.

Under those circumstances, why would the Jets currently offer a multi-year deal at more than around $12.5M a year?

One thing we learned about Joe Douglas is that he doesn't like to overpay players. Now I don't even know if they will tag him. This should be an interesting off season if he continues to stick to this philosophy.

Two 1st round picks and a 3rd coming up!

I hear Seattle is looking for a good cover Safety!

This tweet is just sour grapes from Maye's agent, sorry you rep a safety and not a CB, thats just the way the NFL currently works.

The safety franchise number is so low that the Jets can smartly tag Maye this year and then again next year and lock up his age 28 and 29 seasons for $11 million and $13 respectively.  That is the smartest thing for the Jets given Maye's ability and age.  And frankly, while it wont carry the same sticker clout as a "4 YEAR $50 MILLION DEAL" announced on sportscenter, its still $26 million guaranteed for Maye the next 2 seasons which is good for him too

Typical "agent speak", Maye is 27-28 with a small window to get a long term contract.

So he makes noise to try to push the deal but Douglas may very well tag Maye instead

of investing a 4-5 year deal in someone so close to 30

So Mayes agent makes a dumazz tweet about the jets not taking care of his boy and all the fans are reacting.  Isn’t that what this guy wanted? These agents think they can win by negotiating in public. I don’t get the sense Douglas gives a hoot about what the fans think.  His job is to field the best team he can given the resources he has and the teams success will assuage any fans who think maye is getting a bad deal.

Yea! We will win with guys like cager catching the ball, Perrine running, and guys I don’t know playing in the secondary! Adios talent!! Who needs you!!!
He's a solid building block on and off the field so I'd like to keep him but it's a banner year for FA safeties with Justin Simmons, Anthony Harris, Marcus Williams, John Johnson III, Xavier Woods, Malik Hooker, Keanu Neal, etc., etc.

Both positions are low value positions. These are generally physically smaller players (5'10 - 6'1', in the 210-220lb range) who are obviously athletic enough to be professional football players, but if they had elite skills they'd be CBs or WRs making the truly elite money. Safeties and RBs essentially grow on trees, and replacements can be found at virtually anytime. That's why they don't get the big bucks. It's been happening recently a little bit at the RB position, but buyer's remorse always sets in within a year or two of those deals. For a safety to get up there he has to be Polamalu or Reed, and those players are extremely rare.

Maye and his agent should be glad the tag is so affordable. Sure, he could strike it rich on the open market, but he could also price himself out of it and lose a game of musical chairs in a sea of available safeties. He should sign it before the ink is dry, and be happy to pocket nearly twice as much in 2021 as he did in his first four years in the league. That's really not too shabby.

I’d pay him, assuming the parameters of a long term deal aren’t crazy.

The guy was voted team MVP — you can’t preach about building “the best culture in sports” and constantly have homegrown players leaving because you won’t pay them.

I don't think anyone doesn't want to pay him.

It is always a matter of what he wants vs. what Joe D feels he is worth.  As has been said, he can be franchised twice for 2 years, 24 million.  Given that, why would you sign him for a deal averaging 14-15 million per year?

False. Griffin was not overpaid, and the Jets only signed Perriman to a 1 year deal. Most of his free agents may not have been elite/great, but they weren't terrible.

The mark of any well-run team is their willingness to give Marcus Maye’s agent every penny he commands, for sure

The Jets make a living off the space between the cap floor and the cash spend. Right now it's like 80 million dollars to the cap, and 60 to the floor

This team does not exist to win games. It keeps the lights on long enough to get paid.

As for Marcus maye I don't believe he's a franchise player. But they will use the tag to avoid giving him long term security. This is why no one wants to play for the Jets btw they treat their team mvps like crap and some fans like Tom Shane think that's awesome
