Why fire Joe Douglas?

Just so another GM can replace him and "look good" afterwards?

And all because JD currently has his Jets in position to seriously strike with 7 draft picks within just the first 4 rounds alone along with A+ and top 5 available salary cap space come 2022's Free Agency?

No thanks.

Now that’s the NYK Mentality I’m talking about

I don't care if JD took the job because he thought Thomas Hennessy was a generational log snapper.

I would think that Adam Gase was a good head coach if he got me hired as the GM.

He absolutely did, and I haven't heard anyone defending his failure to secure a kicker.

An another amazing trade by JD. Paying an above average fat defensive tackle moments after drafting another fat defensive tackle was not a good plan for long term success.

His six year contract demand is a good indication that his expectations for 2019 were tempered.

Woody has changed his mind on a whim before.  He promised Mangini after the Favre trade he wouldn’t be fired and fired him 4 months later.  He did something similar to Rex. Gase somehow talked him into firing Macagnan in the middle of May

If the Jets have another “jet-like” year (2 wins or less) JD won’t survive Black Monday.

But I actually think we will be surprisingly good this year

It's indicative of his decision-making.  We know Adam Gase was the worst HC in the history of professional sports, so Joe Douglas whiffing on Gase is no different than Joe Douglas whiffing on the 2020 draft.

It's not like its a position that relies on any technique or routes.  It's binary.  Makes kicks or doesn't.  The next NFL Generational GM wouldn't botch this simple position so often.

Funny. I would think he took this job as there are only 32 in the whole league with not enough opportunities every year.

With his pedigree and rising reputation, Douglas could have been patient and landed another GM job in '19 or '20.  He chose the Jets because he thought they had the franchise quarterback (wrong), the head coach (wrong), the defensive coordinator (wrong), a strong draft class (wrong), and great free agents in Mosley and Bell (wrong) all in place (wrong).

And I have a feeling this wasn't his pitch to the Johnson's:

"I'm going to get rid of every elite player on the roster, I'm going to not support your franchise quarterback prospect, I'm going to whiff on a kicker and cost you 3 games, I'm going to whiff on an aging center and cost you $8M, I'm going to have an unprecedented 10 months to prepare for my first draft and whiff on rounds 2-7, and you're going to see your promising 7-win team become a 2-win joke leading to you eating $15M in coaching salaries as we are forced to fire everyone.  Except me."

Adam Gase was here before Douglas.

No, really?

Douglas bet his career on the Jets, meaning he whiffed on reading and studying Gase.  Douglas surely watched hours of film before accepting the job.  Douglas surely thought Gase a competent head coach before accepting the job.

SAR I

Nah.  Douglas didn't bet his career on Gase.  Gase was a lease with an option to buy.  If it didn't work out then Douglas would have a chance to suggest or even hire "his guy."

A lot of people including Peyton Manning thought Gase was at least competent, but not too many thought he was actually good.  It turns out that Gase needs a Peyton Manning type QB in order to look good.  Ryan Tannehill wasn't even good enough.

As far as the Jets go, Joe Douglas is about the best they can hope to do in hiring a GM right now.  People aren't banging down the door to work here.... yet.  JD was highly regarded in front office circles and it took a lot to get him here.  He was a Top 2 or 3 name for a couple years before he was hired here.

Sounds like he fixed the Gase mess to me and got himself his franchise QB

This is a brilliant play by @SAR I. Everyone (including him) predicts a 4-6 win season. If we somehow win eight games he will say YAY I’m happy, when y’all say “I told you JD was good”.  He will say “I never said he was bad, but don’t lick his balls until he deserves it”.

With Gase though it was So awful that even he had to back down eventually.

I’m a little sad that we haven’t had one of those JD laughing faces yet. I guess that’s coming… perhaps the JD sleeping pic plus get the eyes involved too??

You have to admit this is a brilliant summary of JD’s first shy-two years as GM of the Jets.

Yet he has attracted a coach and staff that looks good, drafted a QB that looks good, and his second draft class looks good.  He has upgraded the medical and training staff, and the players would appear to be less injury prone than last year.

I think we will see a better team on the field than both 2020 and 2019, even if they don’t win 7 games like 2019.    They have until 2023 to make a meaningful playoff run, or we are starting over.

I am not predicting anything.  There is no reason to.  This season is about expectations.  I expect 8 wins.  So should you.

I hope for 10 and a playoff spot, I expect 4-6 due to a rookie HC, many rookies on the team and a rookie QB who played mostly creampuff teams in a covid season. I still hope for the best.

Really what gave you that idea?

Od go so far and bet that JD in his package from the Jets asked for and received the ability to dump Gase if he saw fit and did.

Didnt Macc screw up and let Myers go back to Seattle trying to save a few dollars?  Then he was fired and Myers replacement, didnt he retire right before the start of the season.  Sending JD to scramble and sign Vedvik, a 4th round pick of the Vikes, who failed and sent JD looking for another kicker for week 2?

Isnt it just another case you having no clue and blaming JD for it.

your right JD could have had any job, but he took this one. and because of that i think he told Woody he was tearing it down. who the hell give the GM 6 years contracts.

i think he knew Sam wasn't a good enough QB. yeah hes fine if you give him top talent but that's not a good QB.

and he did try to support Sam. he signed Perriman and drafted Mims to go along with Crowder. yeah they got injured for most of the season but that happens. what are you going to say this year, he didn't support his defense when Lawson is out for the year and Davis for 1/2 of it.

and what elite players are you talking about?. Adams and Leo? 2 guys we were never going to sign. what Lev Bell? maybe Robbie?

and you know better than to judge a draft class after one year right?

did you read the article i posted? a lot of great Saleh quotes. here's one of them.

"We embrace the urgency at which everybody wants to win, but at the same time that can't affect your decision-making for the long haul of the goal of winning championships for extended periods of time," Saleh said. "That urgency in the past has led to spurts of success and lengths of failure. We're trying to get that reversed, to where we have long, long runs of success.

"So while the fan base and all that stuff is greatly appreciated and we want that strain, it's not something that's going to push us to making a mistake that affects the longevity of this organization."

thats you hes talking to.  you wanted to build on that 7 win season for maybe a spurt of success. there building for the long haul.

Stop listening to the new actors and you’ll see the point.  Christopher Johnson announced this same long-haul strategy in 2017 and Jets GM’s have been tearing it down for 5 years without replacing what they’re losing.  There is nothing new going on here. The “new” GM isn’t even new, he’s been here 3 years.

Joe Douglas wasn’t ordered to make us an expansion team.  He did that through negligence.

It’s time for wins. This isn’t Year 1.  It’s Year 5.

Ah, I see you're still going at it, only this time it's not the GASE lovefest, it's the Douglas SH!Tfest...  I'm so glad you are wrong on just about every topic you speak about regarding the NYJ... It's makes me feel good about liking this team.

sorry, thought we were talking about why Douglas took the job, not why Woody blew it by hiring him. Not to be too difficult but this is how my teenager argues - I make a point so she changes the argument :-)

No, I'm focusing on Douglas.  It's not like it was a knee-jerk overnight decision, he took weeks.  Of course he studied all the game film.  Of course he looked at Darnold intensely, of course he looked at Gase intensely.  And, in his mind, he gave them the thumbs-up and that is what it took for him to accept the job.  And that's an epic whiff on Douglas' part, that he joined a high-risk trigger-happy franchise with a QB that busted and a HC that was run out of town on a rail.

Douglas is slicker than Ryan and Idzik, I give him credit for that, for sliding through 2020 unscathed.

Agree Douglas clearly liked Sam and Gase when he took the job.  He also had no problem upgrading both the coaching staff and the QB when he had the opportunity.

Gase was instrumental in hiring Douglas and Douglas obviously was very comfortable working with him.  He also hung on to Sam a little to long and probably didn't get max value for him.  I think he was on the fence but the more time they spent with Zach there was clarity that Zach was a better long term option for the team.

If you want to kill Douglas for being wrong about both Gase and Sam give him some credit for cutting his loss sooner than later.

If Saleh turns out to be another not ready for prime time HC and Zach craps his pants when faced with defenses that are actually game planning for him than Douglas has a lot of baggage to carry forward.  That hasn't happened.  He's got a rookie QB on a mutl year cheap deal and will see if we get some more production out of his 2 drafts.

Calling for a big winning season is absurd at the moment.  Last years draft class had no real training camp and preseason.  The guy gets at least 2 more years to retool this team.
