2021 NFL Draft Mega-thread: News, Rumors, and Discussion

Anybody thought about this...

pick swap with the Eagles

sam isn’t getting us to #8 (Panthers) Unless we throw an extra picks which I don’t see JD doing

However JD has a relationship with Howie Roseman and they are now picking 12th because they were unable to trade up for a quarterback, which clearly indicates they are not settled on Jalen Hurts.

Jets get #12

Eagles get #23 and Sam

Trade value chart makes this assign a 2nd round grade to Darnold.  It kinda fits perfectly both in value, personal relationships, and team needs.

Eagles fans would legitimately hunt Howie Roseman down and murder him if he made that trade.

hey eagles fans guess what...

what???

i just traded back 11 spots in the 1st rd..and do you know what i got for it?

a extra 1st rd pick!!! yeah!! man your the best

no, even better,... Sam Darnold

wait WTF, are you kidding me...

why would phila do that. if they want Sam so bad they would be better off just giving JD the 2nd rd pick he wants and stay at 11.

and you do realize that every mock draft has one of the top 5 QBs most likely Jones available at 8. the Eagles could have had a QB if they stayed at 6.

Seems like the Jets are sticking at 2 much as I’d like them to trade down. Pitts makes a ton of sense for the way the roster is shaking out over the next few years, the scheme, and developing a new quarterback.

Is Atlanta open for business at 4? Might be able to get him a little later but Cincinnati is a risk as is Miami obviously. Bengals don’t really trade and can’t imagine that kind of trade happening with Miami. Think 4 is where you’d go to lock him up.

The strength of the class outside of the QB’s is the pass catchers - not a big need for Atlanta who had an average offense and a really bad defense.

Some speculation that they could round out the pass catcher group with Pitts - doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me since just so many moths to feed - or draft Ryan’s successor - which does make sense but he’s not going anywhere.

Does Atlanta bite on a 23, 34, and Darnold for 4 framework?

It allows them to get a developmental QB behind Ryan, and Smith already has experience being around a post-Gase reclamation project. Good situation for Darnold. But they can do it without spending the #4 pick draft capital on a QB and get two picks in good range to add to the defense.

Values Darnold around a mid second round pick. Could maybe do some ancillary pieces around that framework. Not sure what Atlanta’s cap situation is like.

Very random but thoughts like this are what happens when I can’t sleep because my puppy has diarrhea.

EDIT:

With caffeine in my system I realized that there was already a trade for the #3 pick and this feels like a lot less. Still think it’s an interesting framework but likely a stretch - which I knew at the time but damn it all came together so nicely when my brain was semi-functional.

The drop from 12 to 23 is the equivalent of a 2nd round pick. The reason they would do that is if they felt there was similar talent available at 23 than there was at 12. If the 3 WRs, Pitts, Jaycee Horn, Surtain are all off the board by their pick at 12 they may have the next tier of options at WR/CB (their biggest needs)  as being very likely as being there at pick 23. Say they were choosing between Rashod Bateman and Greg Newsome - who I believe would be the next best CB/WR - I'd be pretty confident that one of them was available at 23. So you get a free QB to compete with Hurts, at a lower contract, and still have a premium pick available in the 2nd round.

I don't think they'll do it because I doubt they want Sam Darnold - but if they did want him and I was an Eagles fan I'd probably prefer this than giving up a 2nd rounder. Ultimately I don't think SD will get a 2nd rounder so this is probably all moot anyway.

At this point I would be extremely surprised for the Jets to trade Darnold before the draft unless its a poor return. Theres a reason why QB's get traded over a month ago(Stafford/Wentz). Because as the draft gets closer we all fall in love with Draft Picks including NFL teams. The same thing happened last year with Jamal Adams.

Lets say you're Denver or Carolina why in the world would you make this trade now? Who knows who is going to slip to you? If your in the boat of people hoping for a 2 our best case scenerio is to have framework for a trade in place with these teams and after round 1 is completed the trade gets made ala Rosen if your hoping for a 2.

I am personally hoping we just take whatever we could get even if its a 3rd etc. Its perfect for midround lineman this year.

Worst case is we role into the season with Darnold and hope to get that 2nd rounder plus at that point or mid season. In my opinion this would be extremely stubborn. A 3rd rounder this year is worth a second rounder next year so why wait? Also the Jets are not at the stage to get comp picks as we likely sign several FA's next year that would cancel out Darnold.

If your taking Wilson Darnold should have been traded a long time ago. Remember the leak that three teams offered the Jets second round picks? Thats why I am pretty confident whatever leaks you hear from the Jets are usually leaked on purpose.

Herbert? why are the Jets so attracted to average 'backs... Carter would be fun.

Tony also wrote that some NFL people saying that if Sewell isn't picked by Bengals, he may fall out of top 10. Personally, think Cowboys would run that card up to podium.

Darnold to Carolina has some legs. Lot to unwind there...

Joe Douglas and Scott Fitterer have a been acquaintances for a long time, and their relationship precedes the Jamal Adams trade last year. Fitterer (who won the job) and Monti Ossenfort (finalist) both pitched their ability to potentially move to #2 in their interviews with Carolina prior to Deshaun Watson coming into focus.

Ownership pretty much insisted they go all in on Deshaun after they fell short on Stafford, and with that twisting in the wind the FO has exercised more rationale RE: trading up. Recently a high level exec said being the depth of the QB class + recent failure of teams who over-mortgaged to move up for QBs + the presence of Watson made it less likely they’d trade up. It would be hard to sell Tepper on Wilson for 3 1sts and a 2nd when you can potentially get Deshaun for the same price if patience is exercised.

Matt Rhule and the coaching staff think highly of Sam Darnold, and he’s one of the primary factors why he was prepared to take the Jets job. Many around the league admire his talent, and given his character/work ethic he’s a guy people feel can be redeemed.

Put all these factors together, and a reality exists where they can trade for Darnold at a reasonable price (3rd + conditional pick) and have a competition between he and Teddy in training camp. Ownership gets a “big name” QB for the short-term, and if they unlock Darnold great, they have solved their QB issue without giving up the 3 1sts & 2 2nds they were prepared to give for Deshaun. If they end the season not enthusiastic with him and Watson does in fact come available, they will still be in position to trade for him. Coaches, execs, ownership all happy.

I would feel better to be at 4 and take whatever is left of Wilson, fields and Lance.  I think it’s Wilson.  Keep Darnold and let it play out.

Wilson will be the #2 pick regardless of team selecting him. Plus it will be the Jets.

Why

I would love that trade. The reason why is that the Jets would be pretty much guaranteed an elite playmaker.  Think of it like this:

1. Lawrence

2. Wilson

3. Jones

The elite non-QBs in this draft are:

Sewell, Pitts Waddle Deontay, Chase and Slater

Well if the QBs go 1,2,3 it is likely that a team will trade up to get one, maybe both. Of course Carolina is also one of them but Broncos, Washington, New England Minnesota all could move up. It is likely at least 1 additional QB goes before 8 and quite possible that all 5 go before 8. If Atlanta goes say Lance, FIelds will be gone before 8 and vice versa

So if 3 go, 2 of the elite players are left, 4 3 of them are and 5 QBs 4 of those players are there.

Any one of them would be an awesome building block for the Jets. It would be incredible value at the #8 spot.

Also thinking about the QBs #2 is not really in play for a trade any longer really.

April 9 was the internal target date to have a consensus on which direction the team preferred at QB. My presumption has been that a trade would follow soon after, being that the Jets have a good idea on the market for each asset as well as access to Wilson’s medical. My guess would likely officially begin vetting offers whether it be for Darnold, #2, or both. Jets haven’t made either “officially” available nor have they made counteroffers to teams who have called as of Monday.

I see some saying a trade will go down on draft day but I know for sure the Jets entered the offseason seeking to avoid that entirely. I would think a trade would happen soon after their internal decision as long as they’re getting “fair” offers. No idea how long Joe would hold out if he’s not getting what he feels is FMV.

The biggest question lingering for me is whether the Panthers have changed their thinking RE: trading up. Now that there seems to be no end in sight to the Watson stuff, I’m wondering if the Panthers will return to “let’s move up for a QB and forget it” mode. Not sure if it was a bluff or what, but 2-3 weeks ago the team pres said team was willing to wait it out for Watson and that it looked like “Pitts, Farley, maybe Fields”’for them at 8. My cousin has a strong plug there, so I have my question drafted and ready to send on Monday.

There is still a hope of a trade and that's all I need to keep believing

Trade value chart makes this assign a 2nd round grade to Darnold.  It kinda fits perfectly both in value, personal relationships, and team needs.

Who says the Eagles are not set with Hurts? They just got rid of Wentz and traded back instead of up.  Hurts provided a spark for them they didn't have all year and he possess those intangible skills the modern day QB now has in the NFL.  He did a nice job last year and that's being pretty much a raw prospect at the QB position. Don't see them bothering with Darnold in the least.

That would be nice. Gotta imagine they’d prefer to trade #73 straight up or with a ‘22 kicker.

Nobody is giving up a premium pick in this draft for that package. That's valuing Darnold as a mid 2nd round pick.

Maybe Carolina would accept 23, 34 & Darnold for #8. That puts a late 3rd value on Darnold. In this draft the #8 pick is going to get the 3rd or 4th best non QB in the draft. That's a very valuable pick to have. The Panthers still have Bridgewater, they don't need to force a deal. The best the deal will be is a 3rd  this year and maybe a conditional 4th next year.
