Think I figured the logic in keeping Chad

The latest rumor has us keeping Chad with a new deal for 1 year, $3M. Why?

Currently, his cap # is $15M. If we keep him he counts that amount and if cut next year (assuming there's a CBA) $9M more must come off the cap (since we will have only taken off $9M of his orig $18M SB, leaving $9M left).

If he's cut now, his cap # is $12M (the amount of his SB that hadn't come off the books through the end of 2005), & he's off the books forever, but then the only QB we have is Brooks Bollinger heading into FA/the draft.

If the new deal we negotiated with Chad is a 1 year salary of $3M with no bonus, we can still cut him if we find a better option for a veteran QB later this off-season. Then we would revert to the above situation regarding cutting him & we lost nothing in the ordeal.

If we keep him for the 1 year, I think he counts the same $15M he would have otherwise counted, since all of the remaining prorated SB ($12M) would get accelerated to 2006 (it being the "new" last year of his contract) plus the $3M salary. So for this season, we'd be in the same situation (cap-wise and personnel-wise) as if we did nothing. But he would be a FA in 2007 and count nothing against any future caps.

No wonder Chad is not acting all bitter about it. Gets $3M for '06 (that no one else would give him), gets a chance to start to show he's still "got it" (that no one else would give him), then gets his walking papers potentially with a better prospect of a future contract elsewhere. And we're 100% off the hook next year. If that is the way it pans out, I'm pretty impressed with Tannenbaum.

SE-There has to be more to it than that, as far as a decision to use a roster spot on him.

Football organizations, well let me change that to smart football organizations, DO NOT keep someone (particularly a qb) on teh roster for the sake of having someone fill a position roster spot.

If Mangini and Tannenbaum are the smart football men that we are saying they are (and I believe it), then they see a potential (meaning an ability to actually be a qb still).

The cap consequences are such that they can make a clean break right now and actually save a little to this year's cap, and even more so, save a HUGE amount to next year's cap and beyond.

And don't think that does not mean a lot tpo this organization, as they sit here today.

If what I wrote is accurate, they would still have that option. But they could take their sweet time with it & see what other veteran(s) are available & at what cost.

If they in fact did that (cutting him immediately after draft, or before summer camp), then the organization would have done a severe hit to their credibility. They would have inevitably pulled the rug out from under a player, who would have sacrificd a lot for the organization. It would be a bait and switch.

And, that would be the read other players in the NFL would see it, and the Jets would be a less attractive destination, all things equal, for other players.

I can't see that

even if they get a high profile rookie they need Chad to come back THIS YEAR for the 2006 jets to have any chance of winning anything. I know most fans assume that the next 3 years are going to be a rebuilding BLAH BLAH BLAH but the truth is that there is no coach in the league, especially an untested young coach with no real reputation that will accept losing now for the possibility of winning later. The jets have to win as soon as possible, believe it or not Chad gives them the best chance to do that.
