YJF
As of March 3rd 2006. There are 6 months to go before the start of The 2006 NFL Season so you can't judge an NFL teams roster or positions before the next season is ready to start. With The draft and free agency coming up, I figure that quite a few new players will be brought in to stabilize the o-line. Here are the players that are gone. OT-Jason Fabini(released) G-Jonathan Goodwin(free agent) C-Kevin Mawae(released) OT-Scott Gragg(retired) C/G-Pete Kendall is on the bubble for now. If a new CBA isn't reached by sunday or if he doesn't restructure. He could be gone. As of today, Here's what The Jets offensive line looks like. T-Adrian Jones T-Marko Cavka G-Brandon Moore T/G-Steve Morley G/T- Doug Nienhuis G/T-Isaac Snell C/G-Norm Katnik G-Michael King C/LS-Charles Missant This is a very young and raw group. Only Adrian Jones and Brandon Moore, two of The Jets young promising lineman have starting experience. The rest of the line are complete unknowns. All 9 of these lineman are 25 years old or younger. Some of these young guys have versatility to play several different positions. All of them are longshots to make the roster though. A couple are headed to NFL Europe for more seasoning. Just a quick rundown of each player. Isaac Snell is an interesting guy to watch. He played defensive line in college. He's 6'6 290 and will be in NFL E to play the o-line. Spent last year on our practice squad. This guy played NT, OLB, MLB and kicker in college and high school. Like Brandon Moore, He's being converted from the d-line and sent to NFLE to learn to play as an o-lineman. Marko Cavka figured to be our top reserve OT last year before he got hurt. He's also headed to NFLE. He's 6'7 294 and he can play both tackle spots. Former 6th round pick. Steve Morley is an interesting player. The Jets traded for him last summer and got him from The Packers. Morley is 6'7 330 and is listed at guard but can play some tackle as well. He's spent time in NFLE. He could compete for a backup spot here. He's got a chance. Center Norm Katnik from USC is an interesting backup too. He played all o-line positions in college and spent some time with us last year. Guard Michael King is an interesting player. He's 6'3 298 and is a great athlete. Track star with light feet at his size. Extremely raw. Doug Nienhuis was a 2005 7th round pick by Seattle out of Oregon State. The Jets signed him off of Seattle's practice squad last year. At 6'6 307, He is listed as a guard but he can play tackle. First team All Pac 10 in college, started 4 straight years. Charles Missant can play center and be a long snapper. He's a longshot to make this team. Had good college career at Western Michigan. As you can see, After Jones and Moore. The o-line position is wide open. I expect this area to be addressed through the draft and free agency. DeathMetalJetsFan
We def. has some young unknowns that are quite interesting. I have heard extremely good things about Snell. I've heard that he has gotten rave reviews over in Europe and also by some NFL FO's. he's got alot of athleticism and may even be capable of playing center. It'll be interesting to see who sticks. Maxman
YJF, real good post. One thing jumps out at me. Could this franchise put anymore pressure on Adrian Jones? He was the low man on the line last year, the question mark. Let him ease himself in at RT. Now he is the veteran at LT. Funny how quick it all changes. mudcat21
Now he is the veteran at LT. Funny how quick it all changes. It could change even faster if we take Ferguson in the draft. Then Jones becomes the vet RT.
StillerPaul
Thats a damn good evaluation. I'm now aware of some of your younger players that could develop into stars. Good job.
faba
The Jets have a couple of guys that are projects like Snell and King that have potential to mold into players. Morley I would have liked to see on the roster playing last year to get a look especially since we gave up a pick for him
YJF
nicely done. I think Morley sticks but it really is wide open. I expect atleast two or three offensive lineman to be drafted by The Jets. The Jets currently have 9 draft picks. The Jets will probably get two or three compensatory selections as a result of free agents lost last offseason. Thrown in the possibility of a John Abraham trade and The Jets could have anywhere from 12 to 15 picks in April. This is a deep draft for offensive lineman. The value in the draft for the o-line will be in rounds 2 to 4. I expect The Jets to target OT and Center in the first 4 rounds. There's real value at guard too. If Kendall returns. He could start at guard or center next year next to Adrian Jones and Brandon Moore. That would be 3 of our starters. Then 1 could come through free agency (Shaffer, Ashworth etc) and one could very well come from the draft. These young lineman are competing for backup spots right now. Each team keeps from 8 to 9 lineman. You can maximize roster value by having backups who can swing from center to guard to tackle.

He was the low man on the line last year, the question mark. Let him ease himself in at RT. Now he is the veteran at LT. Funny how quick it all changes. It's up in the air on Adrian Jones right now. Former college TE who played T for only year. He gained valuable experience last year at RT and LT. We will see what the new staff and regime thinks of him as time goes on. The jury is still out on him. It's out on everybody right now. The Jets figure to be way under the cap in 2007. They are not going to have alot of money commited to the o-line in 06. It's a young group that is not being paid alot of money. If you hit in the draft in the middle rounds on the o-line. You create great cap flexibility for your team moving forward. The one guy who is worth alot of money on the market is Steve Hutchinson but you don't like to throw all of your cap room at a guard despite how dominant he is. Even if The Jets wanted to, I don't think that they have the cap room to sign a player like that right now.

PeterNorth09
Now he is the veteran at LT. Funny how quick it all changes. It could change even faster if we take Ferguson in the draft. Then Jones becomes the vet RT. Jones actually played better at LT than RT. Reason is because he is a better pass blocker than run blocker. Forget D'Brick, draft one of these big, mauling RT's in the later rounds like O"Callaghan and Trueblood. We can also take care of guard and center in the mid-rounds too. Remember, ALOT of good offensive linemen are found in the later rounds. Mackenzie and Fabini were mid-rounders for pete's sake.
124
A friend of mine said that he heard that Mawae was going to be re-signed at a lesser price? I don't know how accurate that report was but he heard it on 1050 ESPN radio this morning. Anyone else here it? Kendall, IMO, has to stay. He's a valuable asset to the team because he can hold his own at C and he's a very good / under-rated OG. He's only what? 32? Yeah that might not seem too young but he's got another good 3-4 years left in the tank.
ThunderbirdJet
I can see the Jets going QB, and then 3 straight O linemen after that. They almost have to. A RT with what I hope we can get for Abraham, a center in the second, and a guard in the third. I think any FA money will go towards thre D, maybe an LB or a NT. We're going to have no depth at CB. In 2007, we should have enough for a few very solid FA signings.
sirlancemehlot
Interesting how often the word "interesting" has made it into the analyses and follow-up posts. Interesting indeed, considering that we are interested in shlubs fighting for such marquis positions as back-up guard. Can I raise my hand and call bull**** on all you guys? YJF is an excellent poster with excellent insights who often tackles the subject matter that most avoid. He is respected and competent. But he's dead wrong in this case. None of the prospects here are interesting. What they are is frightening in their inability to function at a reasonable level in the NFL. What will be interesting is whether or not Dr. Andrews' heart can sustain the impact of watching Chad's bionic arm become unhinged throughout this coming season of sacks, fumbles, and the miserable death of a HOF running back. Marko Cavka is the most recognizable name on the list. Marko Cavka. Cavka. Interesting.
JetCane
Wow, with a current OL lineup like that, I can see why a vet QB would have second thoughts about playing behind it. Better give the QB some track shoes and insurance.

He wasn't even when spots were open for the taking. or Scott Gragg and Pete Kendall would never have been signed. So,even with OL spots opening up left and right, none of these guys could crack the lineup. All these lead to one conclusion-Da Brick is almost a no brainer. Put a big, strong nonfatbody beast like Da Brick at LT for a decade and you'll forget all about it, and it will make the rest of the line a whole bunch better. I have nothing against Cutler, but who exactly is going to block and pass protect? For those of you who think you can get solid OL late in the draft, look at YJF's list and tell me how exactly you can say that. The jets were getting beggars' scraps like Cvaka and Goodwin late while the old regime was getting more middling DBs and DLs in rounds 2 thorugh 5 while the Jints were taking Chris Snee in round 2 and the Pats taking Mankins in 1 . Barton
I hope the rumors are true that the Jets like the falcons Kevin Shaffer. If we can sign him, it would be a good step in the right direction. Only 26 years old. LT - Jones LG - Kendall C - ?? RG - Moore RT - Shaffer If we get 1 of the broncos 1st rd picks for John Abraham, I would draft Nick Mangold. LT - Jones LG - Kendall C - Mangold RG - Moore RT - Shaffer This would give us a young solid Oline (Kendall aside). Olines get better over time as long as they get to play toegether and learn each others tendencies. Have Jones, Mangold, Moore and Shaffer go through some growing pains toegether in 2006 with a punching bag at QB, and they'll be good to go in 2007 with our new QB. Not a single player over 300. If we get Shaffer, I would imagine (and hope) it is to battle Jones at LT, and then we would get a RT through the draft.
