It was that day, it is now, it will be so FOREVER. +1 The only think that kept it from being even worse is that Adams at least maintained trade value. He was a better pick than an even worse non-QB, but that's thin rationalization when you've got two of the game's top QBs on the board, who were both superstars by their second seasons at the latest, which would've further allowed the team to use their 1st rounder + 3 2nd rounders on 4 other positions instead of Darnold. What makes it even worse is there were only 3 potential QB picks that early, and the Bears were kind enough to take the lone wrong decision out of Maccagnan's hands. He literally could not have screwed that up, other than by not taking one of them in favor of a ****ing box safety. Costello is conflating worst individual player chosen with the worst draft pick decision.
Grandy
Not even taking into account what we passed on to take glorified linebacker this is awful. Quinnen and Becton's development and trajectory at key positions makes them better picks even without passing on what we did. Maybe the value we got from trading Jamal counts towards this but I don't know.

Problem is it’s really only good at one thing. It sucks at the things you really need it to do, and it embarrasses you in public. Fortunately, you can buy it for $14k and 5 years later sell it for $13k. The thing is, with a #6 pick we had the budget for a Mercedes. 4

Remember, Sheldon Rankins who we just signed to play DLine has just 1 fewer INT than Jamal Adams over the past 4 years. Jamal is an excellent Strong Safety in the NFL, but he's not a difference maker and he was taken too early especially given what else was available in that Draft. When you combine the 1st round pick the Jets used on him and the 1st round picks the Seahawks used on him you have a total of THREE 1st round picks used on a Safety who has TWO career Interceptions in FOUR seasons. His best play was tackling the Patriots mascot during Pro Bowl week.

doitny
guys i dont think he was accounting for who we COULD HAVE drafted in Adams place. cause we could play that game with Becton who had Cee Dee Lamb, Justin Jefferson and Jonathon Taylor picked after him. and QW had Montez Sweat, Josh Jacobs, DK Metcalf..... so he right about Adams. whether we like him or not he was the best draft pick

sourceworx
I wouldn't dispute Jamal being Mac's best pick only because he wasn't a colossal bust. That said the pick was still a disaster of monumental proportions. We needed a QB, and two excellent prospects were sitting there to be had. And Mac opted to go for a safety. For all of the crying many of the older guys have done about passing on Dan Marino for Ken O'Brien, passing on Watson or Mahomes for Jamal was WAY worse. It's the worst personnel decision this team has ever made, hands down.
sveusb
Watson and Mahomes went to teams with good defenses, offensive lines, and skill positions. Teams that were in the playoffs the previous year. The Jets had none of these. Any quarterback taken by the Jets in 2017 would be considered a bust now.

legler82
PFF Draft Board: Top 100 prospects of 2017 23. Patrick Mahomes II, QB, Texas Tech Mahomes has an incredible feel for making plays outside of the flow of the offense, and when combined with his special arm talent, that allows him to make any throw from any platform—a best-case scenario for Mahomes is tantalizing. The problem is the same feel for making plays also leads to a number of poor decisions with the football, and a prospective team has to find the balance of keeping Mahomes’ aggressiveness and natural playmaking ability while harnessing him to make good decisions within the flow of the offense. 2021 NFL Draft: PFF's Top 100 Draft Big Board 2. QB ZACH WILSON, BYU Wilson’s pro day was as electric as the player we saw on the field last year for BYU. He was the highest-graded passer in the country and has NFL arm talent for days. JETSxWRATH™
But he is. Who exactly in the last 5 years did the Jets draft who has been as good at their position? I grew tired of the drama that came with the guy and sure am happy they traded him for those picks. However, the attempt to discredit this dude's skills as a football player since being traded has been ridiculous. Is he Ed Reed, going to get you a bunch of INTs and TDs? No, that's not his game. His game is being a physical, intimidating, hard hitting strong safety who can also rush the passer, and he was ******* awesome in that role.

GKnight83
Agreed. Ken O'Brien was a huge surprise with Marino still on the board but he was a good QB. I get the value comparison here. I am always going to disagree with the Gholston pick though. He was, indeed, a huge disappointment. However, he was picked exactly where he was projected to be picked by almost everyone doing a mock at that time.
