Don’t know who Marshall is but evidently he’s a batsh*t crazy athlete

Team captain too. Think he was pretty disruptive, good player.

Kind of prefer drafting this guy in the sixth round to selecting a guy who runs 5.0 flat in the top ten but is “the best player in the draft”.

Defensive lineman Jonathan Marshall, graded as a priority free agent before the season, moved himself into Day 3 conversation with his workout today.

Marshall measured a shade over 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds. He completed 36 reps on the bench press (32 ½ inch arms), touched 32 in the vertical jump, and 9’6″ in the broad jump. His 40-time was as fast as 4.77 seconds on many watches. Marshall tweaked his hamstring on the second 40-yard dash and did not run the shuttles or three-cone.

Part of the angst for me is what he did last year to be honest.  He had a nice draft overall but it could have been sooooo much better if he had done better in the 3,4,5 rounds last year.

In any case no one can beef about the most important picks in this draft, the 1st four were total home runs imo.

We don't know yet how he did in Rds 3-5 last year.  Except the Perine pick.  That one sucked for sure.

1 sack.  Maybe a late bloomer?

Alright, another athletic penetrating DT. Those are good too.

We didn't have anyone for the line and were poss losing Foley and JFM this year. Def needed pick even if its just a rotational guy next year.

Positives: Athletic one-gap defensive tackle with scheme versatility. Fires off the snap with a great first step, plays with great pad level, and consistently gets leverage on opponents. Explosive up the field, quickly gets his hands into blockers, and keeps his feet moving. Displays good change-of-direction skills with the ability to immediately alter his angle of attack. Plays with balance, moves well about the field, and flashes pass-rush skill.

Negatives: Lacks great bulk, played out of position at nose tackle for Arkansas last season and was consistently hung up by blocks. Easily knocked off balance or from his angle of attack by the initial hit. Moderately productive throughout his college career.

Analysis: Marshall is an athletic defensive lineman with a large upside, but he must improve his strength and increase his production to have any chance of sticking at the next level.

Jonathan Marshall

DI/Arkansas

OVR - 134
POS - 12 / 21

Pick Grade:Above Average

A good pick for the Jets — Marshall flies off the ball and has a number of ways to win as a pass rusher. He needs to get better on a down-to-down basis, but his run defense is very good and he looks like a player who can develop into an interesting pass rusher.

So later in the draft, the Jets are going for guys with freakish skills, whether it's ridiculous speed or athleticism or sick strength. If you're going to take a flyer on someone, that makes sense.

No more Dylan Donahues and Trevon Wescos!
